Product Description

Butter softens quicker and spreads more easily when more of its surface area is exposed to room temperature. Now you can solve the hard block-of butter problem by handily grating the butter stick into more manageable shavings with a few simple twists. Then, simply gather the butter shavings off the smooth end of the grating disk with the swipe of a butter knife.

The Cooks Innovations Butter Mill’s award-winning design lets you shred and spread butter in your cooking and meal prep readily, whether in the kitchen or at the dining table. It uses a corkscrew action to press the butter neatly against the grate as you twist the storage cylinder.

To use it, simply place a 4 oz stick of butter into the cylinder, snap a couple of parts into place and twist the cylinder counterclockwise to press the butter against the grating disk.
The cylinder also serves as the storage compartment for the butter so after you finish using it, simply snap the cap back over the grating disk and place the Butter Mill back in your fridge until you are ready to use it again. No need to wash it immediately after each use. The Cooks Innovations Butter Mill works better, simpler, and has more functionality than messy, mold-prone butter bells, butter cutters or treacherous open shaving or grating systems.

The grating disk is stainless steel. The rest of the unit is made of BPA-free. The SM1520 model includes a designer-look stainless steel “skin” around the clear plastic Butter Mill chamber. The SM1420 model is clear plastic without the stainless steel skin.

Measures 3.5" x 3.5" w x 4.2" high.

BPA free.

overall good but some issues.

This does work as shown and is very nice but:

When you have used up the butter the red ring is at the very top and above the threads and is a real pain to remove (your hands are slick with butter at this point).

You have to cut a stick of butter in half and put the 2 pieces in the holder but generic american butter does not fit and you have to slice off one side of one stick to get the butter to fit into the holder, not sure how they missed that.

Worse Product I have Ever Bought
by K. T. Catlett (1 out of 5 stars)

This is a terrible product. It is too big for average sized hands. No instructions came with the item. After trying to use it, my hands hurt and it was impossible to turn on cold butter to make the shreds. I am in my very late 60s, and can say without a shadow of a doubt that this is the worse product I have ever bought. If there were no stars or negative stars I would have rated it as the worst ever.

Not good instructions on how to use this product
by Daniel Abercrombie (1 out of 5 stars)

Not good instructions on how to use this product, figured it out. As another reviewer stated, the butter grates in to fine butter stripes but as soon as you use a knife to gather the butter, it all groups back together and is back to pre-grate-state. Hard to turn with cold butter, slippery.

Update 08/19/2017: the gear that pushes up the butter slips and will no longer grate butter.

but it wasn't easy. I'm guessing it works better with margarine

It's big, so it takes up a bit of room in the refrigerator. I was so excited to get it, but it didn't work for me. I had to cut the butter in chunks to get the full stick in there, and then I had to twist it a lot just to get some out, but it wasn't easy. I'm guessing it works better with margarine...not real butter. When I did manage to get some out, it wasn't easy scraping it off the top, and it left a messy glob on top. I didn't even put it back in the refrigerator...I just threw it away. A waste of money in my opinion.

Great, but not long lasting.

We've had this for a year and a half. Took me most of that time to convince the family it was better than trying to slice off a cold stick of butter. Tonight I twisted it and the top ring cracked clear through, it's now totally unusable. :(

My wife's first reaction was to look up better ones, blamed my for buying the cheapest one I found. (I hadn't.) I guess that's a testament to the usefulness, that the biggest skeptic when I bought it, was the first to look for a replacement when it died.

Great product, while it lasts
by Amazon Customer (4 out of 5 stars)

I like the butter mill because I can control how much butter goes on my toast, and the toast isnʻt ruined by hard pieces of butter.

This is my second buttermill. The first one lasted about a year and a half before it the plastic component at the top broke off during use.

Overall it is a good product, even though the stainless steel portion doesnʻt do much to make it more durable.

The device works best when you allow the moving parts to thaw a little before twisting them. I take mine out of the refrigerator 15 min before using the mill.

To keep the mill from getting messy and locking up, I wash the components in hot, soapy water before adding a new butter stick.

Make buttering your toast a piece of cake ;-)

OK, this looks silly but it actually does work very well. It is a basically a butter shaver. You have to cut the stick in half to get it to fit but I think that is in the instructions and once you start turning the wheel butter shreds start coming out. You will most likely need more shreds to get to your desired amount of butter than you would think but once the shreds it something warm the just melt.

Only use this with very cold butter, just leave it in the fridge. It doesn't work well at all with warm butter but I think that is in the instructions too.

I love mine for quick buttered toast.

NICE SOFT BUTTER
by MarcReader (5 out of 5 stars)
June 20, 2015

This is great. I can keep the butter in the refrigerator and still have the ability to have soft butter for use. I am anxious to try it with corn on the cob. It works as it says. I will definitely keep the assembly directions. I don't remember specifically why, but I did have some confusion with assembling the Mill. Then again, I am in my 70's ... maybe that's it. The product is good, sturdy and does what it says. I can see giving these as gifts.

Don't Waste your Money
by Frankie Fortier (1 out of 5 stars)
August 23, 2018

Pitiful! It worked once and never worked again. When it did work you still couldn't spread the butter. The butter did come our shredded. When you scooped it off the top of the shredded with your knife, it still wouldn't spread without softening - which totally defeats the purpose of having the shredder. Bad design and a bad selling point. Save your $15 and just warm your butter up before spreading.

just like a regular stick of butter
by KG5678 (1 out of 5 stars)

As soon as the butter comes out and you use the knife to get it off, it just clumps up again. It makes it impossible to spread, just like a regular stick of butter. I received this as a gift, and wish they wouldn't have wasted the money on it!

This product does NOT work as stated in the description ...
by Sara (1 out of 5 stars)

This product does NOT work as stated in the description. It does not turn properly, is difficult to disassemble, and the butter is NOT spreadable. Furthermore, review the return policy before purchasing!
