Product Description

Just because you're listening to music wirelessly doesn't mean you need to sacrifice quality for convenience. The KEF EGG Digital Hi-Fi Speaker System allows you to wirelessly stream audio from any Bluetooth-capable device with all the depth, clarity and detail you've come to expect from KEF's hi-fi sound.

The KEF EGG speaker features a built-in amplifier and its own digital-to-analog converter (DAC) working in tandem with its Uni-Q driver array to ensure the most realistic listening experience possible. The two hi-fi speakers are linked via our proprietary cable, and come with a handful of wired input options alongside its wireless capabilities. Link your EGG sound system to your computer via its USB input, or become engrossed in your favorite television shows and movies with the EGG's realistic sound. If you're looking to add a little more low end punch to your audio, plug in a KEF subwoofer to your EGG speaker system and enjoy a whole new dimension of hi-fi sound.

Features

  • The KEF EGG brings every nuance of your music or movies to life whether you're listening via USB, auxiliary input, or via Bluetooth.
  • Switch between the EGG's input with its own dedicated remote control, which also allows you to control the volume and power the pair on and off.
  • The unique speaker duo is powered, meaning it employs its own integrated amplifier and DAC. All you need to do is supply the music.
  • The EGG uses KEF's Uni-Q driver array, which combines the tweeter and mid-range driver for a beautifully natural performance.
  • To add even more low end, the EGG features an output for an external subwoofer.

Sleek desktop performers

Properly sized for my desktop, these frosted blue EGGs are elegant and functional near field monitors. I took a gamble on the blue color, as the white ones appeared too bland with little contrasting features, and the black ones had the high-maintenance high gloss finish. The housing is plastic, while my older KEF HTS1001 small egg-shaped passive speakers use metal. These EGGs still feel substantial. Although priced at a premium, these can be found at steep discounts.

There are numerous professional reviews on the EGGs: What Hi-Fi, Trusted Reviews, etc. I like the sound reproduction, except for the bass, which is not only limited but can seem unnatural with certain music. If you like the dynamics of Paradigm speakers to rock your house, you will be disappointed with these. For desktop use, these are fine for my purposes. Keep in mind they are not large boxes, and a subwoofer output is available.

I have these connected via the USB interface to my mini-computer; the highest quality format is 24-bit/96kHz. They also work via USB on my HTC One phone, using an OTG cable. I tried Bluetooth via the HTC phone, and Apple iPad. The HTC has aptX support, while the iPad and other iOS devices do not. I could not tell the difference in sound quality between the two. There's no indication to verify that the aptX codec is in use, either on the EGGs or on the phone.

Since the cord between the two speakers has four conductors, I assume each speaker has its own amp. The right one has the user interface and input/output connections. There is no hardware switch to swap the L & R channels. In USB input mode, this can be done via software. For Windows, there is a free installable Audio Processing Object named "Equalizer APO" that provides audio filters and graphic equalization.

The remote control is basic, but adequate, and of reasonable quality. The seek and pause functions are only available in USB mode, if supported by your app, e.g. foobar2000.

There is a slight audible hiss from each speaker, even with no input signal. I can only hear it when I move in close to the drivers. My prior Audioengine A5s did this as well, but they were worse.

With class D amps, these EGGs are energy efficient. My power consumption measurements:
* Standby: < 0.1W
* USB mode, null input: 2.4W
* Bluetooth mode, paired, null input: 2.4W
* Playing music, moderate+ levels, Bluetooth or USB, SPL ~65dbA @ 2.5': 2.7W

Disklikes:
* Cord permanently attached to Left speaker.
* No volume level indicator, although in USB mode it is visible on your device.
* When switched on, the speakers do not remember the previous input selection.
* No control over auto power-off timing.

Some specs:
* Amplifier output power [per speaker]: LF: 20W, HF: 5W
* Drive units Uni-Q array: HF: 19mm vented Al dome, MF/LF: 115mm Al
* Frequency range (-6dB): 80Hz - 45kHz
* Frequency response (±3dB): 90Hz - 33kHz
* Maximum output (SPL): 95dB

Will turn itself off very quickly, requiring constant restarts.

Not listening to the speakers for around 10-15 minutes they turn off, and unlike most speakers with this feature that automatically turn back on when they receive signal, these need to be started again manually. If you stop listening for a while, you will need to reach out for the power button. This gets very annoying when occasionally watching youtube, for example. KEF support answered my query regarding this issue with the following:
"The KEF EGG System was designed with global energy standards baked in. They will auto-power off after a period of non-use. There is no way to disable this feature."

The sound is good for $200 speakers, but I unless you want constantly be switching your speakers back on, I would choose some other brand.

What real sound sounds like.

These may be the nicest speakers you can hook directly up to an Echo Dot. This is for sound when you know what real instruments sound like. A piano sounds only like a piano. A violin is just sweet and natural. So this is a speaker for people who like acoustic music. It's not a boomy glossy cinema boom box. It makes you smile for the joy of music made of wood and brass and played by human beings. Neutral and sweet. It's. Not hugely loud but it will fill a medium size room. Hook a good subwoofer up and you'll have music that will just swell your heart. So it's all about what you want and what you think is music. The only improvement would be a way to adjust the treble and bass. But by itself it's just sweet.

Excellent Sound and Build Quality
by Thomas Jackman (5 out of 5 stars)

First, these speakers sound excellent, and they better since they are very expensive for what they are (in my case used as a desktop speaker system). My one beef with the sound quality is that I was hoping for more oomph in the low end. I realize these are not gigantic bookshelf speakers, but the low end sound is it a bit lacking considering the price. I realize you can only do so much considering their size, but at $500 a pair I'm expecting a very full sound. Depending on what you listen to, low end may or may not be a problem for you. Luckily, it is very easy to integrate a subwoofer thanks to a dedicated sub out that makes adding low end drop dead simple. Plug and play and let the EGGs work out the crossover. If you have no sub handy, you may be disappointed with these. Once I did add a sub I really, really enjoyed the sound (and for for what it is worth I'm using a cheap, $99 sub and the total package sounds amazing).

One thing I appreciated is that the speakers have ZERO noticeable white noise or hiss whether on or on standby. I've tried similar speaker systems from other brands and they all exhibited a noticeable hiss when on and not in use or when listening to something with the volume on low. That stuff really bugs me and forced me to return these models (which cost less than half of this one). These babies are absolutely silent, with zero noticeable white noise or crackle.

UPDATE: I had problems with the auto standby (it was working as intended, but in USB mode this can cause problems depending on the application). I contacted KEF and they sent me a firmware update that lets you disable this feature. So now I can give these five stars.

Great sounding speakers and they look nice. Wish it saved the last sound input when they power on...

Great sounding speakers! Light on the bass so I'll add something eventually but it has a sub output for that very purpose. I got these on a great sale while shopping for speakers. Super happy they dropped so low to enter the price range I was looking at. I am annoyed that the speakers do not save the last input setting when they are powered on. I'm using the USB connection and have to choose the input each time I power up the PC / speakers. I really wish they saved that but it is a minor issue of usability. Seems like something that could be fixed with a firmware update... (-1 star)

Amazing speakers that aren't worth the original MSRP
by samnum (5 out of 5 stars)

These speakers are wonderful, l'm really enjoying them, but l TOTALLY would not pay $500 for them. l bought them for $200 and l think that price fits the bill pretty fairly. The look great and have a fair bit of weight to them, but l wouldn't recommend using them for anything other than desktop speakers/casual listening through Bluetooth.

Coming from relatively cheap $60 Logitech speakers, these speakers are wonderful and sound very clear, but l'm no audiophile. lf you find yourself looking for decent desktop speakers for around ~$200, l would say these are a very solid choice!

As desktop speakers these do a great job
by Richard J Carmichael (4 out of 5 stars)

KEF do make some wonderful speakers and these although small in dimension do come over as weighty in mass and sound. Easy to set up, took eye two minutes from unpacking and they are well designed. Sizewise the sound is more than ample, as always give them time to settle down a little and loosen up. I would not use them beside a TV to replace a soundbar but in a smaller room they will do an adequate job. Overall a solid 4 stars.

Excellent Price for a Pair of Really Nice Small Speakers
by Amazon Customer (5 out of 5 stars)

The build quality is excellent. The price from this seller, stellar. The sound quality is okay at low volume and much better at high in the large, open room I have these in. The are better, I think for a smaller room like a bedroom, dorm room or office. I know because I have a pair in my bedroom as well and the sound is much fuller.
