Amazing little grill. We uese it at lease one a week.

This thing is a masterpiece of design. I want to buy one for everyone I know. The ignition gel is available at Walmart with the outdoor camping stuff, made by Sterno. Squirt some of the gel into the little tray, the directions say 20 grams, just once around the little grove in the tray. Put seven to ten briquettes in the other cup. Light the gel, place the cup with the charcoal on, and turn up the fan. The gel smokes for a few minutes, I do this outside. In about three minutes (by the time I get back with my beverage of choice) the charcoal is hot and the smoke nearly stops. Then I carry the grill to the dinning table inside, located in front of the patio doors... plenty of ventilation. There are handles for holding it, the handles never get hot. From that point on you have super hot cooking and the nice smoke from whatever you are cooking. The heat lasts about 30 minutes. We have cooked beef, chicken and fish, and vegetables and mushrooms... everything is grilled to perfection right in front of you... in minutes. It looks expensive but the time you save will pay the price tag. Spend your time with your friends and family. The grill surface is 11 inches across and the super hot section is about 5 inches across... so you can serve up to four people, no more. To serve more people I plan to buy more round tables... and more Homping grills.

May 18 Update: I plan to price shop for the next one, I see the price has come down considerably from some sellers, but it has to be this exact make and model.

May 20 Update: This grill has not come down in price. Some sellers list it for $81, with $121 for shipping. This is a $200 grill, and it's worth every penny of $200. I bought the same one for the same price and sent it to my dad for his 84th birthday.

The gel is Sterno 20216 All-Weather Instant Flame Gel Fire Starter

Fan dies quickly and makes the grill useless

Bought this grill in September 2016. Worked great until about a week ago. Great for cooking steaks, chicken, pork etc. Fits enough on the grill for 1 - 2 people. Maybe 3 if depending on the cut of meat you have. If you have to cook for more than that, then you may want to get the larger grill.

The center of the grill obviously sears meat better than the edges because that's where all the coals are and that's where the majority of the heat comes from.

Very economical and only uses a fraction of the amount of coals compared to a traditional grill.

However like i said, about a week ago i tried to grill some steaks and found that the fan's functionality stopped working. I tried cooking the meat without using the fan, but it just doesn't work. The fan is essential with keeping the coals red hot and the flame's heat dispersed as evenly as possible across the grill.

I have contacted Homping to see if i can get it warrantied and will update this review when and IF they do anything about the issue.

UPDATE: 03/01/2017

Homping has ignored my 3 of my requests. I know they received my request because they assigned it to a specific department. Dept 73. However it's sat there for weeks and not only did they not bother to contact me, but they don't respond to my inquiries either.

The grill does not work at all unless the fan works as the grill does not have proper vent holes designed into the body like normal grills do to allow the coals to breath.

I would not recommend anyone purchasing this product. You are better off buying a portable weber grill. $200 down the drain.

Disappointed for Now
by D (4 out of 5 stars)
July 24, 2017

As stated by others, I was disappointed in the amount of heat this "grill" produced. It is a great idea, but just doesn't provide enough heat to do real grilling. I'm not sure if a different kind of charcoal would help, but will be trying other types/brands to see. To be honest, I had trouble cooking a hot dog on the amount of heat that came out of this grill
******************************************************

Okay, to update, I tried this grill again a couple of times, and the key I have found is fill up the charcoal holder with 8-9 lumps. I initially only used a couple of lumps of charcoal, and obviously this is not enough to get the grill hot enough.

VIDEO REVIEW: Unboxing, Demo & Slider Hack
by Heather (5 out of 5 stars)
October 16, 2015

When I saw the Homping Grill for sale on Amazon, I thought "FINALLY!" I'll tell you exactly why in a second... First, I have to admit that this was our 6th grill purchase... but, in our defense, each grill we own serves a different purpose. We love 'tailgating' at sporting & music events.

We have tried 3 different portable grills, but the absolute biggest complaint I had was how long they took to cool down! Why does this matter? Traditional grills can take up to an hour to cool off enough to be able to safely put them away. This means you have to plan for an extra hour between the time you eat and the time you want to enter the event. If it's hot - or cold - outside, this is particularly frustrating. Plus, they make such huge messes... You cannot throw any other portable grill's parts in the dishwasher like you can this guy. (See comments)

In comes this bad boy! You can LITERALLY carry this grill while it's cooking. Which means - it's cool enough to put on your plastic folding tabletop, to move if needed, and to put away when you're done. AWESOME! Plus, as you'll see, it only requires 6-8 pieces of charcoal (try doing that with your traditional charcoal grill...). Not only is that cost effective and less to carry, it also means LESS MESS!

So, I urge you to watch the video below and check it out for yourself. In the video, my husband and I show you what's included, how it works, and do a demo of us using the Homping Grill. BUT WAIT... THERE'S MORE... We give you his "secret" on what you need to make the best sliders. I'm sorry honey! (He was not happy when I did this...)

I want to add, they also sell (sometimes you can get a package deal) a "roasting lid" which is fantastic for grilling veggies, or ensuring all the cheese on your burgers is melted. YUM! We paid $199 for this here on Amazon, which, is a decent price considering the uniqueness and portability of this grill... we figured we were spending that anyway with our poorly made 'fold up' grills that we were burning through. So make the investment and just get this one, it'll last.

Please, if this review was helpful, take a second and click "HELPFUL" after this review. This let's me know my taking the time to do these reviews is helpful to other people like me considering this product. It's what encourages me to continue to do these. THANKS!

Happy with Homping in Oregon

A remarkable "personal" grill that delivers as advertised. Much less smoke pollution due to much more concentrated cooking area with fewer brickets and plenty of heat to cook whatever you desire. Portable and just right for 2!

However, be advised that the cooking lid does not come with it and is essential.

This grill worked great for about three months

This grill worked great for about three months, then the fan stopped working. The unit won't work at all without the fan.

I'm in the process of sending it back for a refund and I'm going to buy a more traditional propane barbecue unit.

Where is my review?
by Pattypye (3 out of 5 stars)
June 22, 2018

I purchased this grill in November 2016. After a few uses I posted a detailed review. Today I looked it up to send the pic and details to a friend. I find that my review is no longer listed. Hmmmm... My review listed the good and the bad and did not give it a bad rating. Don't understand why it was removed.

DON'T BUY THIS. THERE IS NO SUPPORT.
by Tab McBride (1 out of 5 stars)
May 28, 2018

Beware! DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! I bought this almost a year ago. About 4-months ago it stopped working off the batteries. I was able to continue using it by plugging an external power source into the USB port. Now that has failed.

I diagnosed the problem as a failed diode on the small circuit board that supplies power from the USB port or battery to the fan. I sent two inquiries through the Homping USA website, with that information. They went unanswered. In the third inquiry I threatened to leave a negative review. After that, I received an email asking me to identify the bad part from an attached PDF. The PDF contained the instructions for replacing the fan. It did not show any parts except the fan. Therefore, I sent a picture of the part to the customer service representative. Now they are back to ignoring me. Me follow up emails have been answered with absolute silence.

A Homping Good Time
by Thomas Regner (4 out of 5 stars)

The curved grilling surface makes it hard to grill anything that can roll around: Pearl onions - nope. Baby carrots - questionable. Clams in the shell - a comedy of errors. But beyond that quibble, this thing is a lot of fun.

It gets plenty hot and stays hot for a surprisingly long time with the help of the little internal fan, and the cooking area is enough for one or two people, or more if you take turns. It's non-stick so the char tends to stay on the food items instead of being left behind on the grate, and you know how sad it is when that happens.

It's also sad that they won't let you buy the napalm that's recommended for lighting it here in the U.S. (the company calls it "ignition gel") but getting it going with traditional wood charcoal is easy if you start with 2 or 3 briquettes of the stuff that comes with lighter fluid already soaked into it; once that's started to ash over you can add the good stuff on top and all the nasty stuff will have burned off by the time you're ready to start cooking.

All of the removable parts can go in the dishwasher, which works out great. The metal tool that's included makes it easy to lift the grate off and the charcoal holder as well so you don't have to improvise how to dismantle the hot parts when you're done. With the fan running it is practically smokeless, unless you add hickory chips. It might seem obvious in hindsight, but if less smoke is important to you, best not to add hickory chips.

Now, it's true that you could buy 10 old fashioned hibachis for what this costs, but since it uses only about a quarter the charcoal a conventional hibachi would, it pays for itself in just 147 uses!

Nevertheless, a very nice product. Good build quality, thoughtful design, does what it claims. If you want a very small grill or a very portable grill you will not be disappointed in the Homping Grill.

Wanted to go GAGA over this...
by Tina Louk (3 out of 5 stars)

It was OK - will I use it again? Yes. Will I use it as often as I originally though? Probably not.

You cannot use it indoors as originally advertised. It does use few charcoals, but fire does not last long as eluded. Takes a while to heat up & found it difficult to light up charcoals with the lighter gel as directed for use. I end up soaking a cotton ball with fluid and light them up that way.

The results were tasty however, I just anticipated more heat.

I'd recommend it to someone after they tried mine to see if they like. Price point should be about $50 less in my opinion.
