Best quality photos for it's size and purpose!

I LOVE this camera. There. I said it.

Update DEC 10: DxO added a new firmware update to both the camera and software. It's the first major update. I haven't gone over the fixes and improvements, but I can happily say that this camera no longer lags after taking shots! This was my biggest dislike about using the camera. I can't tell you how happy I am about that. I'll have to look over the update notes to see the entire list of improvements. Very happy. I've added 3 new photos from a trip to New Orleans a couple days ago.

When I first read about the DxO ONE a while back (before pre-orders), I hated on it. Fiercely. I am a photographer for approx 25 years, both a hobbyist and a professional. Both film and digital. Photography runs in my veins. When I initially read about the DxO ONE, I thought it was going to be a disaster. It's shape was odd. It only works with the iPhone (and it's current charging/docking port). It looks like it will fit weird. You need an app to make it work. The list goes on and on. BUT, there has always been a soft spot in my photographers brain for small, easy to use cameras that take great photos. Boutique Point and shoots in particular. I love them because not only do high end P&S cameras take great photos and allow manual control when needed, they are usually rugged and of high quality. So, that part of me said give the DxO a chance. On paper, it may be a good fit for me despite all of the quarks. As months crept up on the pre-order, I gradually had less hate and became more interested in what the DxO could offer me as a potentially great travel camera. Despite all the early reviews, I came to have an open mind about it and eventually caved in and pre ordered the darn thing. Fast forward a little over a month. This camera is now an essential part of my life.

I can't begin to tell you how essential this camera has become for me. Most of my photos now days are based on sharing my experiences with family and friends via social media. It's a pleasure to do this using great photography. No more do I have to rely on mediocre phone camera shots and hope to edit them so that they are somewhat presentable. The DxO ONE takes amazing jpegs right out of the camera. An added bonus is the RAW files are an added bonus. Nothing this small that I know of can take such high quality RAW images. It's a real treat. Add some great photo editing apps on the phone such as VSCO, and you have a digital dark room on the go. It truly is a joy to use.

I've been on a journey to find a tiny camera that takes phenomenal photos. Some folks have argued that the Sony QX10/100 'slip on' cameras are as good or better. They ARE NOT. I've used them. The wireless is slow and buggy, and the darn size of them are way to big and odd shaped to be considered portable. It's like carrying around a prime lens in your pocket for crying out loud. Sure, the DxO ONE isn't perfect, but despite it's quarks and bugs (freezing up at times, slow transfer times of photos to the phone), the DxO ONE is my top pick for leaving both the DSLR and P&S cameras at home. This tiny thing that can deliver photos just as good if you're okay with a set focal length. I absolutely love it. I can't wait to see what DxO has in store for it's successor!

A great buy!

I just bought this before going on vacations and I have been very impressed! I shoot with a Sony a7ii but when I don't want to carry a camera with me, I use my phone. The iPhone 6s+ takes great pictures but these are even better! I haven't used it to take continuous photos over a long period of time, so the battery life has been fine for me.l so far.

I added two photos below - the first was taken with my iPhone 6s+ and the second with the DxO (auto settings). Forgive the framing, these are just to show the quality.

Needs a lot of refinement, no maintenance possible, great interface
by Evan Applegate (3 out of 5 stars)

Apparently this discontinued model's hardware is identical to the newer one, but you have to update the firmware. The focus broke immediately after updating; made a horrible grinding sound and wouldn't focus beyond a foot or so. I don't give the replacement good odds, it's well-made but I don't know if the company will continue to service these. Also it gets super hot and the battery doesn't last more than an hour.

But for all that, the photos are good and the interface is fantastic. Using manual controls on an iPhone screen is much easier than on a DSLR. I really like the wireless control mode; the camera's view streams to the phone at a lower quality than when it's connected, making it harder to focus, but it turns the DXO into the most convenient photo rig I've ever used. Clipped it into a grippy smartphone tripod mount, stepped back, and easily took pics at a range of focal lengths and exposures.

For the current $100 price tag, it is absolutely brilliant

It has the 1 inch Sony sensor found in RX100 series and a fixed 32mm/F1.8 lens. Shoots 100+ photos and packs into a pocket. Excellent image quality for what it is. Using iPhone's fantasic display as viewfinder is a great idea.

Saves directly to the phone, which saved quite a bit of work.

Lens is a bit too narrow sometimes, would be nice if it is a 28mm ish lens like the RX0.

Excellent choice to carry around when you don't want the weight of a mirrorless setup.

Obviously the original $599 price tag is way too much, but for $99? Must buy for any photographer.

Overall the optical quality is superior to what can be found on a smartphone

The first camera I received was flawed with a lens that returned mushy corners. As a result I gave the camera only a two star review. After several emails with the company and a review of the camera's image quality, they admitted the camera had a bad lens. As a result, they sent me a new camera (with a return label for the faulty one). The new camera is much sharper! Had I received a good unit the first time, my review would have been a five star one because the image quality is very good. That said, since the poor image quality of the first unit was noticeable and should have never left the factory, I'll only give it a four star rating. Otherwise I recommend this camera for image quality that will blow your iPhone away.

underrated gem, superior photos

A much better camera for the iPhone. At this price around, $100, it s a bargain. It has a huge sensor and takes superior photos with minimal extra effort. I am an accomplished photographer, but no professional. This camera allows me to take great photos without having to haul gear around. The difference in quality is obvious. It has a few limitations, e.g., no optical zoom, impossible to find adapter ring for a polarizer, but it is still great. If you are thinking about a camera like this, you will not regret the purchase.

If you are planning on spending a day taking photos - plan to bring a portable usb charger (it charges relatively quickly) as the battery is my real only negative. I'd suggest getting a carrying case as well to prevent any damage. This little camera gets tons of attention while out and about. I am an amateur photographer and the built in setting along with the ability to go full manual is a great way to get introduced to photography beyond the simply iPhone camera. I do like the standalone functionality when you don't have time to connect the DXO One to the iPhone. I carry this little guy everywhere with me.
