I really want to be more enthusiastic about this, but as trendy as it looks, it's lacking a bit in the following ways:
1. Not adjustable. The LEDs are really bright when in a smaller tent and they're right in your face. Why isn't there a dial to turn and get them to dim?
2. USB connector slides out easily. I guess this could be a feature for strain relief, but it's annoying when your battery pack slips and falls off, and then you're in the dark, looking for it.
3. Static cling. This thing has a case of some static cling. Between that and the sticky-ish silicone coating, it will pick up hairs, lint, etc.

I'll be 100% honest. I tried it out and liked it at first, but when it came time to camp, I just took a normal USB powered RGB LED strip with an inline controller. Not only could I adjust the intensity, but I could adjust the color too, which was really nice!

I received this Luminoodle and battery with a monthly box subscription and while I was at first slightly dismissive but after having an opportunity to use it I am now a believer!

First on the Luminoodle light:

My initial thoughts were that the strip fell flimsy or that the rubber tube it was enclosed in was loose feeling and sloppy rather than a single molded or heat-shrinked piece, and I still have a bit of concern that this might cause one or more of the LEDs to loose their connection and not light up.

However after taking it on a backpacking trip, I changed my mind completely. Two thumbs up!

I arrived at my backcountry campsite after dark in the woods. I strung the luminoodle just above head level over the area I chose to setup my tent. A pleasant not too bright light allowed me to setup my tent, and see all the accessories needed without a headlamp. The included noodle ties allowed me to quickly attach the light to a thin branch and the low weight of the unit extended out toward the end of the branch meant that the branch would barely sag, even with the battery pack back towards the trunk. Consider also that I typically rig a clothesline with paracord over top or near my tent. This is so in the morning I can dry dew or rain off my tent fly while packing other items up. In this case one could just hang the luminoodle from the paracord clothes line for the same even lighting effect as from the tree branch when setting up a tent after dark or for general illumination over a picnic table etc.

Inside the tent, rather than a bright single-source light like a flashlight awkwardly placed in a pocket facing up to light the interior, or endlessly wearing a headlamp, with the noodle you can string it up in or around the gear loft. Now you have bright even overhead lighting perfect for all your in-tent tasks and you never have to worry about bumping it, setting it back up, or shining a headlamp in your camping partner's eyes while talking to each other.

It was also nice for late night trip to the spring to fill up water bottles. I propped it in a branch and the whole area was lit nicely. It's waterproof so if it fell no worries there, except for maybe the battery. A small nite-ize biner kept my battery attached to a branch.

The bi-drectional USB plug meant no worries also on how to plug it in, remember you plug it in in the dark, when things like that matter. Surprisingly the noodle was easy to manipulate such that the LEDs faced down when needed and hung by noodle ties. I didnt use the magnet, fwiw.

What would I add? A dimmer inline with the string, simple push and hold to dim with a slight blink at each extreme just like the Black Diamond headlamps, something made small with attention paid not to add bulk. It would be nice to not completely loose your night vision with a full brightness light when appropriate with the addition of a dimming feature. Also a press and hold setting for SOS might be useful as this would get noticed if you strung this up in a tree on a canyon edge or on top of your tent etc, if you really needed to signal for help.

The Lith4400 Battery:

The 2A stated output is nice, if you needed to it would charge your phone relatively quickly. But my feelings on the battery are not as positive as the light. My main beef is the capacity and cost vs features. Similar sized units by Anker are generally $10 less with 6700mah and use two high quality 18650 internal lithium ion cells. I have that model and use it daily and it gets all of it's spec'd mah rating.

What I would add? It seems Power Practical could have achieved the same capacity and added an LED light of some manner for the price tag they are asking. Just put the LED lamp on the bottom of the battery like a flashlight so you can hang it over something (like a picnic table) as the luminoodle is also running plugged into the top. Also I think for the money, more intuitive battery level indicator and switch, seems there are some things still on the table to implement with the battery to make it worth carrying in a pack. While off switch on the lith4400 is nicer than simply unplugging the lights for the weight I choose to have the larger capacity units by other manufacturers if I was on a 3-4day trek. I suggest implement the downward LED lamp on the battery, make it 6700mah, place a nice battery meter on the side and incorporate the dimmer/sos feature into it and I would pay 29.99, no problem, perhaps more. Keep the light cheap, add features to the companion battery and you have a nice combination.

So my final thoughts are, get the noodle, you will love it. Two thumbs up! It will prove it's usefulness and it is lightweight and small.

There is a good chance are you have another 5v USB device like your phone or GPS along with you and you will be bringing a battery for them. At this point I would recommend against the Lith4400 and pickup and equally rugged and reliable Anker unit for 30% less and nearly the same weight with far more capacity (6700) for $10 less. They also have a 10,000mah, weighs 6oz for $5 less.

My fiancé and I purchased the 5ft luminoodle alil before a camping trip we were going on for our anniversary in hopes that we would receive it before we left. Not only did it arrive on time, but earlier than the arrival date that was given to us. I decided to bring it out on one of the nights we wanted to play cards out on the picnic table in front of our camp. It was perfect! Was the perfect amount of lighting and was very easy to set up. My fiancé even made a comment saying that it may have been too bright since we had other campers somewhat close to us. The next evening we went out hiking together so I thought I'd bring along the luminoodle again, only this time using it as a lantern by keeping it in the bag that was included when we bought it. Once again, it did it's job perfectly just as described! My only regrets are buying the 5ft size instead of the 10ft size, and not buying this sooner. Loved the luminoodle so much that we'll definitely be purchasing another and definitely would recommend this to a friend!

I loved this think when I first got it. It's a great idea, and I love the magnetic attachments and the noodle ties. However, mine lasted about a year and then mysteriously just stopped after the warranty time expired. I'd like to give it more stars but to only have it for a year then beciome garbage is unacceptable. I hate waste and garbage and try to buy quality products so I can buy fewer things and minimize the things I have to throw out. I can't reccomend a luminoodle based on its durability.

Great for car camping and tents

The Luminoodle is a nifty design, but I wouldn't suggest it as a primary lighting source. During a few weekends of car camping with it, I've noticed utility in large indoor areas that need wide-area lighting. Places such as the trunk of the car and inside of the tent are good areas for this to work. The color temperature is not a cold-blueish white, but it's not entirely warm and natural either. The strand of lights all matched in color and intensity.

The power source can be any USB powered outlet or battery pack. There is no on-off switch. Plug it in and it turns on. Unplug it and it turns off. This was a minor annoyance trying to find the connector in the dark to plug in. -0.5 stars for this reason. I did not purchase the matching power pack since I have several USB battery packs already, so perhaps it has a switch. Would have been easy for them to add one to the light itself.

The other reason I would not recommend this as a sole car camp light is that there is no dimmer switch. Sure you could put it into included translucent storage sack, but it's still quite bright and is draining the battery at the same rate. -0.5 stars for this.

This product is innovative and relatively portable. I would recommend it for car camping and home use. The lack of waterproofing, self-contained battery, and short runtime would not make for a good technical light source.

Perfect for Burning Man

I purchased 5 luminoodles prior to Burning Man last year. It is an annual week long event where there is no electricity. I do volunteer work for the BMan Census and am required to provide self illumination for night shifts. I wore one luminoodle hanging around my neck, with an Anker 5200 power pack in my Census coat pocket, so that vehicles entering the playa could see me. Additionally, i would wear one at night during the event. I was visible and it was much better than wearing a headlamp. I had 4 remaining luminoodles with no specific plans for their use. I erected my Shiftpod tent, which is hexagonal, and discovered that each span was 5 feet long.at the base of the roof. I quickly installed my remaining 4 and then made an emergency call to my daughter, who was arriving later, to order 2 more so that luminoodles spanned the entire perimeter of the Shiftpod. It was amazing, as it illuminated our campsite, but now the silver Shiftpod looked like a spaceship. They put out so much light, that one of the couples in our encampment requested I remove one facing their camper as it was shining through their window. Their camper was 30 feet away. Love my luminoodles...lots of light with many applications.

Party Lights For Your Tent!

I saw this product on the new products page and thought this would be a great product for camping so I purchased it. Here are my thoughts:

The build quality is good. It feels slightly flimsy but you get used to the fact that it simply has to be this flexible to operate as designed.

When used as a strip light the LEDs produce a very nice amount of light. I used it for camping in the bed of my pickup and it was great. When used as a lantern with the included bag it produces enough light but it still seems like I would rather use a flashlight for walking around camp at night.

The battery life is very good and the power source can be used as a light itself which is very helpful if you are trying to find the strip in the dark.

The power source switch on mine is slightly intermittent when switching to flashlight mode but it has never faltered for battery pack mode. This could be a one-off thing and it's few and far between so I didn't deduct any stars for it.

Overall I love it and would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a way to illuminate their camper, tent, hammock, etc...

Overpriced, but versatile

I bought these lights for camping to help illuminate the tent and the cooking area.

PROS
- Magnetic attachment (for mounting to metal/car)
- Loop attachment (for mounting to tent or tree branches)
- Solid material that appears to be well-made and weatherproof
- Comes in stuff sack that can also be used to convert the lights into a lantern
- USB powered

CONS
- A bit overpriced for a string light, but the quality is apparent in the material

I like these lights and would buy more if the price dropped by another $5 or $10. Most of my friends agree.

This was quite a surprise treat when I stumbled upon it on Amazon. It sounded like a very good product to have when reading the description, and upon receiving it, I really did enjoy all the options for use:
- having this plug into a USB port as opposed to power outlet was genius. I tried attaching it to an older power bank I used for my cell phone, and it ran for hours and hours with no problem, and essentially is not bogged down with having to be close to a power outlet.
- the translucent bag it comes with does function well as a lantern when you put the lights in it and turn it on--bonus use, since you can hang the bag from something.
- it also comes with custom ties that you can adjust for various lengths, to hang the lights or attach them with, which is a nice option.
- it also has some plastic anchors with magnets built in, so you can attach the light strip easily to any metal surface.
- the battery that comes with it also has the added bonus of LED bulbs across the side, so you have an instant flashlight there as well.

Overall a great product to have--can use it for temporary lighting across the household, or more functional flashlight in the car, or outdoors. So many possible uses!
