A step forward, and then backward.

This mouse has so much potential, but it suffers from a few flaws that really detracts from an otherwise wonderful experience. As far as the ergonomics go, I feel as if it's the best form-fitting design yet. The curves are sleek and tilted to a more natural and organic plane than the previous model. Overall, the look and build quality definitely did improve as it feels less like a tacky niche product and more like a higher-end luxury computer peripheral. That said, I do have some issues with this mouse:

First, the lack of a middle mouse button. Why they would take away something that is heavily relied upon by many? I have no idea. I ended up remapping my third mouse button as the middle click, but really wish the wheel was a button as well.

Next, the squeaky wheel. It may not happen to everyone (or it may, but just take longer), but the plastic wheel bracket begins to wear and often creates this cringe-worthy squeaking noise when you scroll quickly. It may not bother everyone, but to me, it was like nails on a chalkboard. I ended up opening it up and applying some lubricant to the joints and the squeaks went away.

Lastly, whereas the VerticalMouse 4 had a grippy, rubberized coating, the C is just encased in a slippery-feeling plastic. This is especially a nuisance on the wireless model as it has considerable more heft then the wired variant. You may find it difficult to pick up the mouse and reorient it on the desk/mousepad because of the way the top of the mouse is shaped along with the slippery finish (even more so if you have rather dry hands [ie. during the winter months]).

I still use the mouse as my daily driver and have learned to deal with the annoyances, but wonder how much greater this mouse could have been.

I have been using Evoluent mice for years, wired and wireless. This is not my favorite, but is not bad enough for me to replace it with the older model.

First, I did contact Evoluent support about refresh rates (as I sometimes use it for light gaming). The refresh rate is the same on this model as the others, at 125hz. This is obviously quite a bit lower than many of the specialized gaming mice, but seeing as this mouse is not marketed as such, it is to be expected. I dont notice any issues in FPS gaming

I really like the extended lip on the bottom.

I am not yet sure how I feel about what feels like a steeper curvature, causing your fingers to be more curled than the previous model, where they remained straighter.

There are two things I dont like. First, I find that clicking makes a bit of a creaking noise, which I never had with the previous models. I also feel like the pressure required to click is higher (though, my old units are quite worked in, this may improve).

Would love to see a horizontal scroll function on a future version.

In general, I love this mouse. The "handshake" position is definitely a lot more comfortable than the traditional flat-handed mouse design. The buttons are easy to reach and press, the scroll wheel is in a good spot, the back and forward buttons are easily accessible, the software to configure it works well, it tracks perfectly, and the DPI changes are pretty handy. Lots of pros to consider!

There is, however, one rather large con: The scroll wheel itself. After a few days, it begins to squeak every time you use it. Not just a little squeak, either. More like a wounded bird or an angry mouse. It's very jarring.

Great ergonomics terrible quality

The ergonomics are fantastic of this thing. fit my hand great and nearly perfect positioning. Will help with pain for sure. However the quality is just not there for a $100 mouse. The wheel is terrible and feels like one from a $15 mouse. My starting squeaking loudly after only 45 days of use. There is not bearing as one would expect for such an expensive mouse. It is just plastic on plastic. I emailed their support and was advised to oil it, which is basically impossible without completely taking the mouse apart. I had to stop using it after less than 3 months because the squeaking became so annoying. Also, button clicks feel cheap, and that mouse just has a cheap underweight feel to it. Giant disappointment because they really nailed the ergonomics of it. Should be a $30 mouse.

Some things that most people don't think about is that your wrist when in a neutral position, such as shaking a persons hand or running, your two forearm bones are in a none overlaped orientation to each other.

When you are palms up or down this causes your shoulder to rotate, and forearms /wrist to be in a stressed position (the bones cross each other).

Only within the last few centuries humans have put ourselves into this situation of unnatural positions.

When you are typing flat or using a standard mouse this causes the a very unnatural position. Think even about writing a letter , and the position you hold a pen or pencil, a very natural position and none stressed.

This mouse helps overcome some of those issues and puts your wrist in a non-stressed / non-overlapped position. It's helped my wrist and shoulders a ton over the last 8 years as I continue to upgrade to the newest Evoluent products. This newest generation is my favorite and I've ordered 1 for home and 1 for the office.

I will say that each product lasts about 2-3 years before it starts acting up, and this causes me to upgrade each time because customer service isn't that great. I continue to do so because how great the product helps me from a health stand point but I hate the reliability issues.

This new generation has a well known squeaking issues that can be solved by putting some mineral oil in the joints. Very annoying for a $100+ mouse! But , as I mentioned earlier, it helps my shoulders, helps my wrists, so I continue to pay it.

Another issue is the short range from the USB transmitter to the mouse, if it is too far away it will drop quickly. For example I need to put the USB transmitter into my monitors side USB ports because the ones in the back cause too more interference.

The batteries seem to drain quicker than I would expect, I get a few months out of each one, but I do use the computer VERY often.

If a copy cat company comes on the market with better reliability I will switch in a second.

THIS IS HOW YOU FIX THE SQUEAKING SCROLL WHEEL

First off, vertical mice are fantastic. This is my favorite out of their line up. The dedicated middle mouse button is great for a lot of the 3D software that require frequent middle-mouse clicking. In short, my wrist problems went away completely when I started using their vertical mice.

It's just their wireless mouse that has the annoyingly squeaking scroll wheel. I personally own two of this same model, and a third at work. Out of the three, two of them squeak like crazy.

HERE'S THE FIX.

You do NOT have to open the mouse to oil it. Get some mineral oil. Look down the gap between the mouse buttons and the scroll wheel. You'll see a plastic shaft that rotates with the scroll wheel. You won't have line of sight with the area creating the friction and therefore the sound, but this technique address that. Put a small drop of mineral oil on one shaft that connects to the mouse wheel. Tilt the mouse so that the side you just oiled points down, so the oil rolls away from the scroll wheel. Let it sit for a minute or two, and then rotate the mouse in the opposite direction so the oil can flow back into the wheel again, letting you oil the area that you didn't have line of sight with. Do that for both sides of the scroll wheel, and the squeaking will go away.

A great mouse otherwise. Just get some mineral oil and you'll be good.

I have to do a large volume of cut and paste from documents in a window on one monitor to a document on another monitor. It requires very fine hand/wrist control and precise positioning of the cursor in both documents. After four years of this with a conventional mouse I had lost almost all feeling in my right hand pinky and fourth finger, along with constant inflammation of my wrist. I was concerned that I might have done permanent damage. After a few days of using this mouse my hand and wrist have almost completely recovered. The relief is immediate and significant! (Two exclamation points in this review from a guy who never uses exclamation points).

Now, it will take you some practice. A conventional mouse has your hand in a horizontal position, allowing you a 'point and click' precision that somewhat corresponds to the position of your index finger. The ergonomic mouse has your hand in a vertical position that requires the use of different muscles - a more side to side arm and wrist motion. This will take some getting used to. I was ready to give up because it so slowed my production. So I practiced a little here and there to get used to it and still keep my production up.

There are extra buttons that you can assign CTRL+C and CTRL+V for copy/paste (or what ever you need), but you'll have to take care to not inadvertently press them while you get used to holding this thing as the buttons are above and below the thumb. These are assigned using the drivers that come with the mouse. You will have to experiment and fine tune pointer speed using the native OS driver (Windows or Mac), so you might as well leave the mouse settings dialog box open until you have the speed and positioning the way you need it.

I'll have to return with how long this thing lives - I burn through 2 or 3 mice a year with the wheel and buttons failing. We'll see how it goes...

TL;DR: Practice and fine tune the settings. It's worth the time and effort if you like having a hand, wrist and fingers that function for things other than data entry. Buy it. You will not be disappoint.

Creak creak creak...

I prefer the vertical orientation of the Vertical Mouse 3 a bit more, which is closer to 90 degrees (this one is closer to 57 degrees). Still, the ergonomics are quite good, so I was able to look past that pretty easily. It looks really sleek as well - very pleasing to the eye. The extended lip on the bottom is also a really nice feature.

The deal-breaker for me was that after only a single day of use, the left-click button began creaking with even the slightest bit of pressure (I didn't even have to click the button to produce the noise). It sounded like someone walking across creaky floorboards all day. It was incredibly distracting, like nails on a chalkboard, and absolutely drove me up the wall. I had no choice but to return it.

The issue is that the entire right side of the mouse is a single piece of plastic with slits cut in it to create separate clickable buttons. That single piece of plastic has to be bent in order for buttons to be clicked though, and therein lies the problem. This seems like a major design flaw, as bending plastic repeatedly will inevitably lead to creaking and stress cracks, though even I am surprised at how quickly those symptoms manifested.

I should have trusted the reviews, but I really wanted to give the Vertical Mouse C an honest chance to win me over given how much I loved my old Vertical Mouse 3. I now regret that decision. This mouse is definitely a regression compare to my old Vertical Mouse 3, which lasted for 5+ years. This one didn't even make it a week.

I still think Evoluent's ergonomics are top-notch, so I've ordered a Vertical Mouse 4 to replace it. I'm hoping the quality on the VM4RW will be slightly better, but my confidence in this company is definitely shaken at the moment.

Best vertical mouse I have found

I'm a long time Evoluent vertical mouse user, having used a wired VM1 and VM2 as well as a wireless VM4. I've had this VMCRW for a couple of days. I do find it more comfortable than the VM4, and also lighter weight. Thank God they dropped the shiny, slippery chrome thumb area, going with a black plastic surface which, while not grippy, is much improved. The chrome on the mouse seems to have a dark shading, or it may just be reflecting my mouse pad, but in any event I like the look. As others have said, it is a bit more vertical, and my thumb and forefinger are a bit closer together, which I like. I read a lot of reviews complaining about a squeaky or stiff mouse wheel, and that worried me. I contacted Evoluent tech support before ordering. He told me the mouse has a 2-year warranty, and if such a problem arises, contact them and they will exchange it. I figure if I run into it, it should certainly be within two years. It's only been two days, so of course, so far so good. My only issue is getting use to a slightly different positioning of the bottom (right-click) button. I absolutely love the middle double click button and have for years. Why other mice don't include it is beyond me.

Being a software developer, I spend more time in my cube at my computer than any other task during the day. Although I try to take breaks, do wrist exercises, and use a standing desk to minimize injury I have had a huge increase in wrist and arm pain in my mouse hand. I initially bought a few other cheap ergo mice that were just far too small and not very comfortable.

After purchasing this one; I almost returned it just because of the price tag however getting frustrated with all other solutions I decided to jump in. Immediately having put it into my hand I realized that it is worth EVERY penny. I even have started to recommend this to all of my coworkers. Hands down, best mouse I have ever held in my hand.
