I was using a mesh strainer to collect all the hair from my drain and it worked fine. Saw the Tubshroom and thought I would try it. It works at collecting the hairs but it completely slows down the drainage of the water in the tub. You end up standing in a puddle while you shower and all the hair and soap now linger in tub.

I went back to using the strainer.

Let's cut to the chase. While I like this product and I would recommend it the advertisement is a bunch of bull.

I have owned this product for a few weeks. I have a little over shoulder length curly thick hair. (in case you were wondering) I tested it for a week because I wanted to give it a good amount of time to give myself an unbiased opinion.

The advertisement shows hair going down the drain and getting caught in the TubShroom BUT doesn't show hair with hair product, soap, or dirt and oils from your body. The mixture of these things actually does cause a bit of a drainage problem and after about a few days of use water began to collect at the bottom of my tub. My husband actually took it out while he showered at one point so he didn't have to stand in it. So I suggest changing it out every few days and not a week.

Cleaning is also a bit difficult. Because most people shower at least once a day the TubShroom is always wet. In the ads they clean it while the hair is completely dry so it just slides right off. Well the hair product and in my case my husbands alternating shower schedule with mine keeps it wet making it a bit harder to "Remove the hair with one effortless move."

After cleaning it I rinsed mine off with hot water and a little bit of Dawn dish soap to get off the hair product and all the other grimey stuff off. I've since put it back and have found a good schedule as far as cleaning it goes and haven't had any drainage problems since.

It's a good product and I do recommend it but I do suggest considering the things that I've mentioned.

Definitely not worth the tradeoff

I replaced my old metal shower drain cap with a tubshroom. The tubshroom does indeed take another couple of showers to clog up.

BUT, once it does clog up, and it so definitely does, it's a total pain to clean all the hair and soap scum from the device because the hair is threaded through tons of tiny holes. You need to take it out of the shower and laboriously pick at the thing over the toilet, it takes a good two minutes and is of course a disgusting process. Compare that to my old metal cap, where I could just reach down and scrape up the "mat" of hair and soap scum in a single motion. Still disgusting, but a 2 second operation.

Also, the tubshroom got little black splotches on the silicone which I couldn't scrape off. Not sure if the material itself was degrading or if it was black mold. Either way, not happy about it!

I tossed the tubshroom in the garbage and put my old metal cap back in the shower. The search continues.

It works but there is no good way to clean it

It works but there is no good way to clean it. I tried everything but the holes fill up with mold quick. Shampoo product along with never being able to dry makes for a mess to clean later. If you want to clean this every week it works well but for anyone else I would try something else.

Update: more than a year later and I have yet to have to unclog the drain!

I am one of those people who clogs the shower drains with my hair. It got to the point where I brushed my hair well before getting in and then kept a brush in the shower to wrap the excess hair in while shampooing, and would STILL clog the drain every 6 weeks or so. I've had this about 2 months now and thought I'd really test it out by no longer brushing my hair before or during the shower. No clogs! It's amazing how much this thing catches considering it's this cheap looking piece of rubber that doesn't even fit well. I will say, it's much easier (and a lot less slimy) to clean when dry. And the loose fit (& lightweight) means sometimes my cat thinks he can play with it again and I'll find it in the bedroom floor. I tell everyone I know about this thing.

Don't hesitate! Buy it, you will no regret it!!!

I have to say I was a bit skeptical about this product when I first heard of it. After several recommendations from friends (and needing to find another solution for the hair clogs) I went ahead and purchased it.

We are a household of 3 woman, 2 with short hair and 1 with long hair, not to mention several family member visits a month with multiple people having longer hair. Oh, and a medium haired dog that does get washed in the shower.

I tried 3 other drain catchers while i was waiting for this one to arrive. None could hold up and frankly were nasty to clean out.

I removed the metal catcher with a screwdriver and placed the Shroom in its place (as directed by the printed instructions on the box), at first it looked funny sticking out a bit (the instructions tell you this is normal) and my mom thought I had dropped a giant button in the shower (top view). The first shower was a grand success. Not only was the water able to properly drain (goodbye standing in a pool of your own dirty bathwater!!!!) but the hair dropped into the catcher without it collecting on the top (so it was not visible to one taking a shower). Once I was done, I didn't think it had worked since all the hair drained, little did i know it was draining into the spool. All the hair that had gone down was indeed caught and very, very simple to remove from the spool. I grabbed tissue and just "peeled" the hair off and threw away the trash. Voila! I don't know why I had ever hesitated. I like it so much and it is so useful, i am including it in all my housewarming gifts. It is the item you never knew you needed nor wanted. But now that i have it I am so much better for it.

AMAZING! A must have for families with long shedding hair!!

AMAZING! A must have for families with long shedding hair!!

Doesn't fit snug in my tub drain but fits well enough. Once a month I used to have to use chemicals to declog our shower drain as the amount of hair coming from my long hair and my teenage daughters made it so the shower would clog up and provide us with three to four inches of standing water. It was a real pain in the butt, a constant added expense, and made the tub constantly feel and look dirty. I bought this hoping it would catch the hair as advertised causing the drain to not clog. This tiny little device is a true miracle!!! We've been using it for almost 3 months now and I have yet to need to use chemicals 2 declogged pipes as we have ZERO clogs!! I do have to remove the plug everyday to remove the hair that has collected otherwise the tub will not drain. Cleaning the plug is a nasty job as you can imagine hair soap scum Etc. The only true negative that I have found is that the in side of the plug is hard to clean as the soap scum collects to it and using a tissue simply won't clean it. About once a week I have to go in with a pipe cleaner or bottle brush to clean and sanitize the inside of the plug cylinder.
***update*** its been about 6 months or so and I just purchased a new poo be. The original got too nasty. These are really hard to clean and clog up with soap scum, body fluids etc quickly. After a while its time to toss and replace. Still even with replacing 2 times a year its a bargain compared to using chemicals 4 + times a year! Product works great and I still give it 5 stars.I just wish it was easier to clean!

BEST. STRAINER. EVER.
by Lawyer For Justice,Top Contributor: Pets (5 out of 5 stars)

I was skeptical about this little rubber strainer, but I needed something to save my drains from the piles of hair that fall out of my head. I tried others and they all failed miserably.

This thing is amazing! It fit into my standard drain perfectly, and I don't think a single hair slipped by it. It was pretty gross to see how much hair I lost in just one shower, but it was comforting to know it wasn't clogging my drain.

Clean up is super easy, too. I just took a tissue and wiped it from top to bottom, grabbing all the hair as the soft rubber strainer released it all easily. Not a hair was caught in it.

Best strainer I've ever had. I strongly recommend it!!!

Great job demonstrating how much I am shedding.
by niki (5 out of 5 stars)

Good lord I am a shedder. This product does a great job of catching my hair. Removing hair from it and putting it in the trash can is easy but not pleasant. Little gross.

There are things in a marriage which could be classified as "should dos" and "must dos" if you agree upon them before hand. I love cats. It my husband doesn't but he agreed we could have 3 cats if I cleaned the litter every day. I agreed to empty tub shroom of hair at least weekly. These are "must dos" since I agreed to them. There are other things that are should dos but you just don't feel like it. Then, if your husband starts doing those things him self the tub shroom develops a problem. If more than a week goes by of me doing neither the must or the should dos then the tub shroom becomes an impermeable cylinder of hair/soap/man goo that resembles a tiny plaster cast.

So, this product, like men, are more functional if serviced at least once a week.

Best hair trap I've ever used, and I've used virtually every style
by Amazon Customer (5 out of 5 stars)
May 10, 2017

I used to have to throw out expensive hair traps that sit over top of the drain after only a few weeks because you could never really get them fully clean. The soap scum and whatnot would accumulate in all the little hair-trap holes and no matter how hard you scrubbed, the thing gets cloudy, gunky, stained, and ugly-looking.

Not this thing! The genius is that the hair and scum get wrapped around the tubular part that sits - invisibly - down inside the drain. Yes, your drain will get slow after about 10 showers or so and you need to remove the hair, clear away as much of the gunk as possible. But you don't have to worry about getting it all, just most of it. Why spend time and elbow grease really cleaning something like this just to avoid having something ugly down in your shower? This takes care of it; the top stays clean and it's all you ever see. No offensive soap-scum. The lower part may get stained, but you only see it when you're cleaning it.

I found that this does NOT slow my drain appreciably when it has been recently cleaned. I love that it's soft and doesn't hurt toes if stepped on or kicked. I love that I only have to clear away hair and not worry about cleaning the thing for presentation's sake; I can just wipe the hair away and put it back, done. Buy one for every bathroom and one of the sink ones for every sink in your house.
