Philips Smoke-Less Infrared Grill - let's grill everything!
by looking around (5 out of 5 stars)
July 3, 2016

I just got this in time for the 4th of July celebrations! I live in a condo where we are not allowed gas or charcoal grills (like usual!), so this "Philips Smoke-Less Infrared Grill" seemed like the ideal solution. I read and researched for a while before "pulling the trigger" and going with this grill, I followed the instructions and got the results I was expecting. Some observations:
1 - When it says preheat, for the fuller (non-stick) grill - it means at "full power", not the "keep-warm" setting.
2 - It recommends preheat for 6 minutes, I find 10 minutes works best.
3 - When you preheat - for the 1st time - it seems that you open the "gates of Hell" on your kitchen...yes you can feel the heat! Just step away for 10 minutes. Make sure you do not place it under any counters - it needs a very open space - For the "lighter" grill there's no need to preheat.
4 - It is very hard to see if your meats/poultry are cooking properly, because of the infrared light (my 1st try was at night...) so use a high-power white light, or cook during the day - that way you can see the "doneness" better.
5 - It is smokeless! Truly! (I'm very pleased by this...) though, I would suggest opening up some windows to get rid of the BBQ smell - you'll notice next day (believe me!) If you can't open up the windows, turn on the range smoke extractor for your stove! And if you have some air filters, turn them on - that way you avoid any lingering smells next day (it'll be noisy, but just for 15 - 20 minutes...)
6 - The thicker the cut of meat, poultry, fish, etc. the longer it needs to be on the grill to achieve a well done consistency. Personally I do not like too much pink on my steaks, so I keep them on longer. Today I did some Bubba burgers, and had them on the grill for 5 minutes each side - they turned out perfect.
7 - The "keep warm" function works pretty good - I had one of my burgers on for about 15 minutes and it did not dry out.
8 - Clean up - make sure the grill is fully cooled down to start clean up - this takes about half hour of cooling (depending on your ambient temperature.) Run the (separate, detachable) grills under some warm/hot water (I prefer as hot as possible) and get a good, sturdy nylon bristle brush with lots of dish washing soap and run it good through the grill - make sure to go in between to get all the drippings and fat that runs down from the meats. Depending on the "fattiness" of the meats that you cook on the grill, some splatter will occur into the internal walls of the unit itself, I find it that if you scrub it with a sponge (with warm/hot water and dish washing soap) and just wipe it down - it'll make for a better/cleaner use the next time around - remember, the unit cannot/should not be dipped in water (as it would ruin the electrical components.)

I hope my "observations" helped - and Happy 4th of July!

This product is heaven-sent

I don't write a lot of product reviews, but this is one I can get really enthusiastic about. We are Manhattan city dwellers and love to grill. That's a problem because we live in an apartment building, and have no outdoor space, and no exhaust hood. I've learned to sear and broil meats and fish, but sometimes you need a grill... I considered many options - blowtorch, illegal hibachi on my fire escape, etc. But nothing could scratch the itch.

Finally!! here is finally a HOT indoor grill that combines ambient, aerated heat with an iron grill surface that is easy to clean! It doesn't smoke up the kitchen any more than your stovetop range, and can seriously char some meat! It gets really, really hot.

Of course this won't impart a charcoal flavor to your food. But it's much better than any George-Foreman-esque grill which are really just panini presses, to be honest. This one allows a lot of heat to grill and roast food while providing ample space above and below for food to aerate - which gives you a crisp crusty charred finish to fish and meat. This is DRY HEAT. That's what a grill is for.

The product uses some kind of infrared convection technology. The trick is that the heat is emanating is situated above the pan where the drippings fall. That means the drippings do not heat, and don't sizzle. Hence no smoke. The food might smoke a little up top, but it won't create a cloud in your kitchen. Just enough for you to smell what you're having for dinner. Yum!

Caveat: I am cooking for two. This isn't a great solution for a barbecue party for 10 people. You want to give your food some good space on the grill - don't crowd the lamb chops!

So far we've tried some chicken skewers which I marinated in soy, sesame, and sugar. The first skewer actually overcooked in under 8 minutes! The second one got a better sear, and was moist and delicious.

We also grilled a whole stuffed branzino. I used no oil, get the skin nice and crispy. It was some of the best grilled fish we've ever had. Winner Winner Fish Dinner.

Cleanup is a cinch. The drippings tray pulls out goes into the dish washer. The grill comes off and goes into the dishwasher. I reward my hard work with another glass of wine.

Hope you enjoy your Phillips Smokeless Indoor Grill as much as we have! Cheers.

This product comes with the BBQ grate which is not for all food you have to buy the grill grate separate $40 I bought mine from Phillips hoping that the food would look remotely close to the infomercial not a chance!! I heat mine up on high for at least 8 minutes before I put anything on it and by time you get any color your food is overcooked look at the shrimp! I think they photoshop their infomercial! Run don't waste your money I'm stuck with mine! I don't expect it to be like a char grill but everything looks boiled I did get some grill marks on zucchini but I don't need to pay $300 to do that plus an additional 40 for a second grate! Don't do it you've been warned!!!!

One star lost to shoddy cleaning instructions. Still, it's the real deal.

OK, I've been using this product for about two weeks, grilling hamburgers, toasting buns, and even grilling shrimp. Here's my take on the product.

Heat: Perfect! This works just like a charcoal grill, except that there are no flare-ups.

Smoke: Less! As the description implies, it puts out less smoke. The drip tray still gets hot enough for the drippings to simmer, but nothing seems to really burn down there. Beef fat still makes little "dripsicles" that hang from the grill just like you'd see on a charcoal or gas grill, and these tend to get crispy and smokey. I managed to set off the smoke detector with it once, and I'm not sure if it was from a well-toasted bun (not burnt, just well-toasted, ha!) or from smokey fumes coming from the hot surfaces.

Mess: Yep, burgers still cause a little spattering around the grill, but that's just the nature of the beast. There's nothing to shield the contents of your countertop around this grill. Plan accordingly.

Cleanup: Speaking of spattering... the chrome around the top gets a little dirty, as do the exterior sides, at least from burgers. The nonstick grilling surface is super-easy to wash by hand, and it fits in the dishwasher just fine too. I really wish the drip pan had a nonstick finish so the rendered beef fat and drippings would slide right off after it cools down. Still, it comes clean pretty easily after using a paper towel to push the heavy stuff into the trash. You definitely don't want to dump that down the drain unless you really miss seeing your plumber between visits. Cleaning the interior is a little more difficult, requiring the same tools you'd use to clean a ceramic cooktop. The manufacturer's website recommends using a scraper on the chromed sides, which will scratch the finish. Liquid ceramic cooktop cleaner will dissolve any build-up on both the glass panes and the chrome side panels.

Storage: It's big. Much bigger than the Griddler or a Foreman Grill. The dimensions listed in the Product Description are accurate. There's no making it any smaller, except maybe if you stored the removable grilling surface elsewhere, and that's only going to shave about 1.5 inches (4 cm) off the height. It's too big to easily store in a cabinet, so it lives on top of my toaster oven when the oven's not in use. If you have a relatively high ceiling, maybe you can store yours on top of your cabinets.

Stay far away....... this thing sucks. For something that is almost 300 dollars (compared to 50 and 100 dollar models) this is plastic made crapper ware. The power button is plastic with plastic clips that broke with my first time use. I am a head sous chef with over 35 years in the industry and you are essentially paying for the philips name and clever marketing. "Smokeless" grills have been around almost forever, and at a fraction of the cost.

How to Clean the Glass and Stainless Still sides on this Grill. - Only Easy with Easy Off
by Dartiesdad (3 out of 5 stars)
April 16, 2017

We bought this grill to use in a winter condo in South Caroline. We ere quite pleased with what it does as a grill but very disappointed in the clean-up process. While the top grill and bottom tray (which we covered with disposable foil) cleaned up as advertised it was a different issue with the insides. The glass and stainless steel insides end up covered in grease splatter that bake on and eventually will not allow the infrared lamps to do a full job

After trying several milder options we now soak paper towels in Easy Off oven cleaner and place them directly on the glass and stainless panels when it is still warm. Leave them in place for 2 hours and then remove. A kitchen scrubber (not green) allows you to remove any residue. Then rinse with a wet paper towel and dry.

If you try to spray Easy Off directly not the panels you risk damaging other electrical components.

These components should have been removable and I think this design flaw limits maximum consumer use.

Not worth the money

The outside of the food I cooked, the texture was tough "like leather" including Salmon. Also, it wasn't smokeless. Everytime I used it I had a kitchen with a layer of smoke that I never had using other smokeless grills.

WAY, WAY, WAY OVERPRICED, THE INFRARED LIGHT DIRECTION IS DANGEROUS, AND THE GOOKING GRID PEELS EASI
by 911boss (2 out of 5 stars)
October 14, 2017

When I received this grill and read instructions it had a warning that infrared light is harmful to the eyes. No where in TV commercial, Philips website, on Amazon website, or on the box did it give the warning. I know any very bright light is harmful to the eyes so I followed all cleaning and set up instructions. When I turned on the grill I thought my eyes would going to burn because the infrared lights are mostly facing upward. I places two steaks on grill and yes they cooked quicker than with an ordinary grill but did not taste any better. The plug got very warm, too warm to be comfortable with. So I give this grill 4 stars for constant heat and cooking steaks quicker. I give it 4 stars for food not sticking. Now, I give it 2 stars for the dangerous light direction. I give it 2 stars for the plug getting too warm. And, I give it 1 star because the non-stick cooking grid was peeling after one cooking session and mild cleaning.
