BUYER BEWARE OF NEW SOFTWARE UPDATE BY WEMO
by Amazon Customer (1 out of 5 stars)
June 3, 2019

I have had 5 wemo insight switches that worked perfectly for the past year, UNTIL WEMO decided to upgrade their software. Now, as a result of that, they shut off sporadically at different times of the day. Their engineers are WELL AWARE of what's going on, but it's been well over a month and nothing has happened yet.

Buy something else

Let me start off by saying I've got a ton of wifi and IoT devices in my home, 5 or 6 different brands of smart plugs.

I don't quite understand why Wemo has such a brand presence in the IoT space. Their devices are clumsy and I find myself fighting against them rather than them making my life easier.

If you have a router that merges your 2.4 and 5Ghz signals under one SSID (If you don't see 5g or 2.4 in your network name, this might mean you), this device can be difficult to set up. The plug only works on 2.4 like most IoT devices, but appeared to not be able to find that signal while my phone was connected to the 5G signal. Took a lot of work to get it set up, not something I think Mom would be able to setup, which is my rule of thumb for set experience.

Once setup, the plug has trouble staying connected to my network. My router can dynamically change wifi channels to avoid interference, which isn't a problem for 99% of devices. This one however, disconnect and won't reconnect until I power cycle it, kinda defeating the purpose of having a smart plug in the first place. I ended up having to disable that feature on my router to work around their poor wifi implementation

Next, the physical design of the device is a little bulky for my usage. It can block other plugs in the same outlet.

And finally, why is this so expensive?? If you made it this far in my review, go buy 2 or 3 smart plugs elsewhere for the same cost.

I left 2 stars here because after fighting with it so much, it works fine. It doesn't look pretty and I would never buy another, yet it stays plugged in, hidden behind furniture.

After a Power Outage Device Does not Power Back On. Horrible Design.
by Hades (2 out of 5 stars)
August 4, 2018

While the insight smart plug works "when it is working" it has a major limitation. In the case of a power outage, the device requires a manual push of the power button to power it back on. Upon further investigation, this issue has been raised by customers since 2012 on Wemo/Belkins support page. Wemo's response is that it is a safety issue and that is why they require manual intervention. That Wemo does not provide customers with an option as to whether they want to incur this risk is a shame and what's even more problematic is that customers have been complaining about this on their support page for OVER 5Yrs with little to no input from their support staff who occasionally seem to provide responses on the support forums.

To showcase how ridiculous this feature is and how it's enforced implementation by Wemo is even more of a safety issue, My Internet Router, Wireless Access point and other gear plug into a strip that plugs into the Wemo insight. I also have several security cameras around the property that rely on wireless access for notifications and the like. These are plugged into regular outlets.

I had a Power outage and the Wemo did not "self power back on" or go back to the previous state which was on. Therefore, my Internet connection remained down, my wireless remained down and my cameras were in effect useless as they could not record to the cloud and or to my local storage since the network was down until I manually powered on the Wemo. IFFT and all other automation apps that people will recommend all require internet access to detect the state of a device and therefore act, so they (I believe) are not a solution to this problem as stated.

Wemo if you are reading this, it is a glaring miss on your part. What's more bothersome is that users have been requesting this feature for over 5 yrs with several examples such as mine given of why your implementation of this feature is a limiter. I bought several of these devices and I'm looking for replacement options based on their inaction and for the simple fact that the "feature" introduces more risk than I care to deal with.

Troublesome issues with remote access and occasional power failures
by Slund (1 out of 5 stars)
November 25, 2018

Simply awful. We have a cabin with satellite internet (which has its own issues, but that is not an issue in this case; every other connected device works fine). Every power failure discontinues service. Each WeMo device needs to be manually reset, which defeats the purpose of buying them for us, since remote monitoring was the main reason for buying them. After 2 years, we dumped them.

Importanty (while I thought it was nice at first), please note that EVERY device you want associated with your device must be brought into Wi-Fi range for it to take affect or allow access. This is a crucial component for those who monitor their home remotely (or just bought a new iPad or android device). YOU CAN NOT ADD A WEMO DEVICE TO YOUR APP UNLESS THAT DEVICE IS ON THE SAME WI-FI NETWORK. Imagine taking each of your tablets to a WeMo base, just to get a connection to the app....

I simply can't recommend these devices. Definitely a "do-not-buy" for anyone with a second property they want to control.

TP-Link, Amazon, and other devices are far more more reliable. Save your money, if you are thinking of buying one. The ability to log in and sync via a user name and password is worth any extra money spent (though other providers do the same for nothing, and are cheaper by far).

Please be careful about what you purchase... other vendors offer far better products, when it comes to remote access. We wouldn't touch Belkin devices ever. Huge mistake on our end,

Requires you run their app and share location data
by Erik (1 out of 5 stars)
October 14, 2018

Belkin used to have a SDK where you could write your own software for these but it was discontinued last year. Even so given support for things like IFTTT I figured I would give the Insight Smart Plug a try as there is still a lot I could do with IFTTT.

I didn't get past the setup, it requires you run their app (sin #1) and when I relented and installed their app it requires I give access to my location to setup the device (sin #2). When I click on the "why is location required" link inside their app they make up a BS statement about this being an Android P or Android O requirement "for apps to receive information about your network" (sin #3, if you read the Android developer documentation this became an OPTION with Android P/O, but Belkin did not have to use this option).

I can mostly forgive letting the SDK die, I get it in that there are only a handful of us that really care about this. I can begrudgingly (while cursing Belkin under my breath) overlook using an App (rather than a web page) for setup, again they need to focus finite resources for the most common customer scenarios. But requiring location data then lying to me about why it's required while on the same page asking me to trust them that they'll keep my information safe?

Wanted to use it.
by Firefighter Joe (2 out of 5 stars)

I really wanted to like this Wemo smart plug. I primarily got it to integrate with my SENSE Energy Monitor to help identify my energy usage on certain appliances. But the big issue with this after a power outage, this smart plug doesn't restore back to its last power state. Meaning. If you lose power and power comes back on, this plug would stay in the off state. Not good if you had it on your fridge or HVAC equipment and you were wanting to track it's power usage. Otherwise go with the TP-Link HS110 I believe. It integrates with the SENSE Energy Monitor and will restore to its last powered state.

WEMO knows that this plug doesn't restore power to its last state and every asks for the feature. But they decline. Otherwise I really wanted to use this plug because of its design and that it has the ability to works with the Apple HomeKit ecosystem with the WEMO hub.

Latest Firmware Broken. Do Not Update.
by Peter Preuss (2 out of 5 stars)

Newest Firmware Broken

Caution!!! Latest Firmware causes devices plugged into WeMo Insight switch to power off after 45 minutes or less.

I have been testing the WeMo switch for some time and finally purchased two additional units after determining it worked for my application. I have a Dehumidifier under the house that is very difficult to access. I need to turn it on in the morning and off at night and I need to monitor if it is turning on or off automatically. The WeMo was perfect for this. When I installed the new device I upgraded the firmware immediately and then found that after about 45 minutes the WeMo turns itself off making the device totally useless. I replaced the WeMo today with another device. If you need depend on this switch staying powered on for a device (a dehumidifier, a refrigerator, etc...) that turns itself off and on periodically wait until WeMo fixes the issue. Support was useless after being on the phone with them for 2 hours and there is a thread in their online support community with many users complaining of the same issue and no response from Belkin. There is a lengthy thread on Berlin support of people reporting the same issue.

Also the app on iPhone is terribly slow and hangs for a long time while it updates information. Often I think the app is frozen and then suddenly it opens 10 screens in rapid fire.

Nice features of the Wemo are Ifttt integration and alerts allowing me to know when the device plugged into the WeMo is drawing power and when it is in standby mode.

Frustrating and awful
by Bryan Hughes (1 out of 5 stars)
January 18, 2019

I have several of these devices and have been using them for years (some are the first gen). At first they worked ok, but then just tend to drop out of service here and there. Whether or not they'd be found by the wemo app seemed completely random. Sometimes some would be there, sometimes none, rarely all. In the last several months, I found myself having to completely set up the device again in the app apparently randomly. If the home WiFi goes out for a minute ... for get it, I was looking at a frustrating hour or two setting them all up again. The last straw was after the last software update and I can't even get half of the things to set up at all. I just received a pair of the Amazon plugs and they connected in a few seconds. I'm not looking back. I'd usually donate electronics that I no longer need, but not these - I'd never want to subject anyone to smart home hell.
