Nope - Lots of competition, too expensive
by Nitpicker (1 out of 5 stars)

This vacuum has great suction, no question, because of that alone it gets 1 star. Dyson has a ton of Roller Ball competition now and they're not much better than the rest, just a lot more expensive.

During my vacuuming I get too irritated by:
1. The short power cord. No outlets in my hallways, this vacuum won't reach down the hall or the staircase from the bedroom thanks to the too short power cord. Not convenient for a two story home.
2. The attachments can't be stored with the vacuum. Rather surprised that at this price point a rack for the hose and all the attachments wasn't included.
3. The carpet attachment is only air driven. The beater bar helps lift surface fuzz, fibers and hair into the hose but its too soft, and raised too high, to move carpet fibers around.
4. It feels cheap. I know this is silly but its an expensive machine and it feels plasticy cheap. A few small changes would have made all the difference, like make the wand extend from the top rather than the floor.
5. I'm over the whole "bagless" vacuum.I hate that dust flies everywhere and I have to stick something up in the canister to hanger-ons out. There's dirt everywhere and the entire vacuum seems gross. I miss opening the machine, grabbing the bag, throwing it out, and having a clean vacuum with a new clean bag.
6. THE WORST: Everytime I go to empty the dirt canister by pressing the red "release" button to free the canister from the vacuum, the bottom opens up and spills the contents all over the floor. I have to get my other vacuum to clean it up. It's a very small plastic "hook" that does a poor job of holding the contents of the dirt in the canister. SO IRRITATING! To the point I'm ready to trash this whole thing and never buy another overpriced Dyson again!!!

They make a big deal out of "It's self righting" but maybe it shouldn't tip over so easily in the first place.

No filter and great pickup power

We have indoor/outdoor dogs and live in the country. It really does pick up the dirt and fur. My complaint is that it makes a lot of noise and sometimes whistles when you bring it back toward you. I have had 2 other Dyson canister vacuum cleaners and never had that problem. This is by far the noisiest one I have ever owned. I do like that there is no filter, but make sure it is in the closed position when you are through empting it or the next time you pull it off to empty it you will have a mess to clean up. It only happened to me once and now I make sure it is closed..

It was a four, now it's a three. I am having trouble opening it to clean out the tank and also closing it. The little lever sticks and I have to pry it up. I am beginning to research other vacuum cleaners, sorry to say. Also I had to buy the hard floor tool extra. I don't understand why it doesn't come with the vacuum when purchased. Not everyone lives in a carpeted space. I have both,

Update: Be very careful emptying it, as you may get fine particles of dust in your eyes. My husband bought a new shop vacuum with a huge bag in it and it works almost as well as the Dyson with one tenth of the cost.

My Beam 20 year old central vac quit, so I tried finding a repairman. When I did, just the service calls and cleaning parts would have cost more than this. So I ordered. Know that my experience with central vacs may influence my working with a canister vac.

Pros: good suction, easy to move and carry upstairs, easy to empty, convenient tools, flexible connections to get into small spaces, quieter than I expected

Cons: cord just a bit short, small capacity, some tools need adapters to connect, small cleaning path with carpet tool, tools seem too lightweight.

I am happy so far, but I doubt this will last as long as my central vac. But for right now I think I made the right choice.

Let's see, I have an older Dyson that I absolutely loved! I've had it for 8 years at least and it is heavy and grimy so I wanted something lighter and easier to get under things. I help with Dog Rescue so hair is a MAJOR issue. Even though I have a Dyson I still did a lot of research. I was a bit worried that I read comments like cord to short, canister too small....I didn't find these to be a big issue. Yes, a longer cord would be great but not a big deal to me. What my MAJOR dislike with this vacuum is small but solid things get stuck in the floor head thing and is quite a pain to dislodge. With my old Dyson rarely did anything of any size get stuck but if it did there are enough "joints" to open and easily pull item out. This is NOT the case w this Dyson. It gets stuck, makes a loud shreaching noise and then you almost have to break the floor attachment to get your fingers in to move the problem. I'm very hopeful that Dyson will make a fix and mail us a new attachment. These are not cheap, but Dyson has a rep to protect 😐 the suction is amazing. I would not purchase again if I knew how much this would bother me. I would wait for the solution or next model.

Designed by engineers who never had to actually clean a house.

We bought this Dyson Big Ball vacuum two years ago to replace an older Miele canister vacuum and from the start it has been a tremendous disappointment. The poor build quality is especially shocking given the high price point of this machine. Our housekeeper tried it once and adamantly refused to use it again. Both the power and cord retract buttons began to stick in the down position within the first month of use. The top of the wand where it connects to the hose soon after developed leaks that create a singularly annoying high-pitch whistling that no amount of tinkering can quiet. The canister's high center of gravity makes it ungainly to the point where it wants to tip over instead of turn corners and becomes caught on every doorway I pass though while cleaning. However, the worst and most unforgivable shortcoming in how this machine is constructed is latch on the dust collector housing:

The first photo I have attached to this review shows the catch that holds shut the dust collector; it is tiny, weak, and ineffective. It was failing almost half the time while removing the dust collector to be emptied following use, which meant that all the dirt, dust, and filth gathered during housecleaning was dumped right back onto the floor and on top of the machine. Thank goodness we kept the old Miele vacuum, because it was so often needed to clean up after the Dyson's dumping out the entire contents of its dust collector onto our newly clean floor. I solved this situation by attaching a small brass furniture catch to the bottom of the dust collector housing to prevent these frequent and disgusting spills. My fix is illustrated in the second photo - DO NOT USE THIS VACUUM CLEANER WITHOUT MAKING A SIMILAR MODIFICATION TO THE DUST COLLECTOR!

Yes the suction is excellent and remains so as the dust collector fills, but this is only one of many factors that make a vacuum cleaner worth buying and using. The Dyson Big Ball is absolutely inept at picking up anything but particulate matter of a particular size - a scrap of cellophane, a popcorn kernel, a small leaf from a houseplant must be picked up by hand when vacuuming with this machine - it is incapable of dealing with household detritus of any size larger than coarse sand. Also- if dust is too fine, spilled flour for instance, the fine filters in the dust collector become immediately clogged and must be cleaned with a long-handled brush, an arduous process.

Yes it is bagless- but that means that emptying the dust collector is quite the mess in itself. NEVER EVER EMPTY THIS MACHINE INSIDE YOUR LIVING SPACE! I cannot imagine how a high-rise apartment dweller would cope with the cloud of gritty dust and dander that is discharged when the dust collector on this Dyson is successfully emptied. The dust collector also requires periodic washing with water and detergent to prevent it from developing an overpowering stale smell. With our Miele canister, we used aftermarket bags we bought from an Ebay vendor for around a dollar apiece; they worked perfectly well, and their low price made us comfortable changing bags frequently enough so that the vacuum stayed clean and fresh smelling.

Long story short, this Dyson Big Ball has been nothing but trouble. For the price there are many far better options available when choosing a new vacuum cleaner.

Have had Dyson bagless vacuums for decades, still a great machine.

I really like not having to clean out hepa filters anymore & the emptying mechanism is efficient & easy. I really like having a big canister vacuum that's not heavy, that I can carry whilst cleaning the stairs & reach high to clean spiders webs off the light fixtures & dust the blinds. The carpet tool is really efficient & sucks so hard you can feel the carpet resist. The only complaint I would have is that the rotary head that comes with the vacuum isn't great on hard floors (as it tends to kick larger pieces across the room rather than suck them up, & when the knob that stops the rotary action is pulled up it's still really noisy). I had to buy a new hard floor head as the one I had from my previous Dyson canister wouldn't fit, even with an adapter. When you spend $600 on a canister vacuum cleaner you shouldn't have to spend another $50 for another tool. Loads of other tools come with it but not the hard floor tool, which makes little sense other than to nickel & dime customers.

Don't buy if you have hard floors!!!

This vacuum is terrible! (Note: this is my fourth Dyson in 14 years--I loved the other 3 and still use two of them!) If you don't buy the hard floor tool, it simply shoots anything that isn't dust across the room...basically you have to sweep the floor to vacuum the floor. If you do use the hard floor tool, you STILL have to sweep first, because anything bigger than a pea seems to jam up the opening in the hard floor tool or just won't pick it up! I specifically bought it because it was supposed to work on hard floors as well as flatter area rugs and because I LOVED my other Dysons...I wish I had returned it!

I'm a 69 yo male that wants to keep my house immaculate. I have used this Dyson for over a year and hate it more than ever. It replaced a Kenmore that was excellent for 26 years! First the good : extendable wand, suitable suction, doesn't get stuck around corners. That's it. Here's the rest of horrid story: After you spend 4 hours cleaning your house for the arrival of important guests you can easily detach the "bagless container" of filth which will promptly POP OPEN and dump the contents on the white carpets. That's right ...with all their great technology and engineering, the whole mess is contingent on a tiny, flimsy plastic clip. Totally absurd... not a single occurrence but 5 times this year. I guess i finally learned to carry this bomb with two hands outside. And don't think just because there is no filter to clean that when this thing dumps it is completely empty. Even when you go outside for this pageant dirt is flying in your face as you try to get the thing cleaned out. Ultimately buy a small brush to get it clean. The tiny stainless steel pores clog with hair for you to try pick out. The hose is flimsy, the carpet brush is air powered ..so reduced suction means no brushing. I regret this expensive headache of a purchase.

This replaced my older Dyson canister vacuum, which was working as well as when I bought it. I wanted the ball version, not because I have pets or a staircase, but because it's easier to manipulate and it has a much-improved manner of disposing of the canister contents. Boy, does this vacuum do a good job without a lot of effort on my part! I do have to empty the canister fairly often, which is a slight nuisance, but I'll live with it. Also, it is noisy, so be prepared for that. A favorite, small attachment picks up hair from carpeting and avoids your having to stop the machine (and unplug it!!!) to remove strands of hair clogging the rollers. (I don't remember whether I bought this separately - however, it's worth it.) This attachment does not clean quite as thoroughly as the rollers alone, but it is enormously useful. To my delight, the wand really extends. Lots of great engineering. Before I committed to buying this version, I took a look at several YouTube reviews and got a good feeling for it.

Haven't had this vacuum very long, so I'm still getting used to it, but so far I love how easy it is to maneuver and the suction is beyond what I expected. I have always had Electrolux vacuums in the past and this is so much easier to maneuver and clean. I really like not having to deal with bags. It's very user friendly!!!
