very cool ideas, but it failed on execution
by StonedSoulPicnic (2 out of 5 stars)

I bought this opener from another retailer but wanted to share my experience.

First, if you are an early adopter and are willing to take the associated risks, then consider this GDO. If not, go with a more traditional brand and type.

This is arguably the most innovative GDO on the market when you consider the horsepower and accessory ports, it's the first garage door opener platform. All accessories I tried worked as promised. I had the extension cord reel, Bluetooth speaker, and the back-up battery. Overall, very cool ideas, but it failed on execution.

In spite of getting high marks for innovation, I'm afraid that's where the goodness ended for me. A garage door opener should deliver years and years of care free, convenience. You just should not have to think about it. Not the case with the RYOBI. I have had mine for about 2 years and every 6 months or so it would just stop working. The first time it stopped was because the installers used existing wires and spliced then with the new wires for the sensors and keypad. Apparently this is a no no which eventually caused the GDO to lose all settings and rendered it inoperable. The second time it stopped working was because settings were lost again and it would not work until the settings were re-entered. Third time it stopped working was because, somehow, the door sensors went bad and needed to be replaced. Over the two years that I have had it; there have been a series of minor annoyances as well. When I used the built-in Homelink buttons in my car; they did not always work the first time I pressed the button. I would have to make sure the car was positioned just so in order for it to work. Never a big deal but really annoying when you are trying to get on the road to go to work. Also the outside keypad was quirky. On my old, decrepit GDO on the other garage door we have, you just press in your secret code and the door opens. On the Ryobi, I think you have to turn on the keypad on then press in your code, then press the up/down button and it *might* work. that always took several tries before it worked. What a pain.

So after two years...UNCLE...I give. I just replaced the RYOBI with a LiftMaster from Overhead Door. I already see a huge difference in quality and performance. I don't regret my decision to buy the RYOBI. As an early adopter, that's what I do, but I cannot recommend it. Perhaps a future generation will offer higher reliability. Once reliability is up to par with old school GDOs; then we will have a horse race. But until then, I cannot recommend.

It was easy to install and very sturdy

I purchased this GDO from Home Depot in July 2016. It was easy to install and very sturdy, quiet, aesthetically pleasing, and provides excellent lighting from the bright white LEDs. One+ batteries (not included) are used to enable the battery backup function and also charges them.

Android/iPhone app works great with features I love such as push notifications if GDO is opened after designated time and push otificaiton if left open for a user set time. App shows status of garage and the time since it was either closed or opened last. You do not need to be on your wifi network to use this and therfore are able to open/close GDO, control the light and all accessories when you are out of the state. App keeps log of all events. App also can email multple addresses on events and a lockscreen can be enabled every time the app is opened.

I did have issues with the garage door refuseing to close. Problem ended up being sensor wires were not fully secured in terminals (they were just touching and not clamped down) and I raised sensors to 18" from 12" so reflection off of cement from sun in early morning didn't "blind" the sensors. Was a mystery to me for couple weeks but 100% perfect now.

I cannot attest to homekit functionality as some other reviews have stated as I do not use it.

Pros:
+Takes same lithium battery that are used in the Ryobi One+ tool line.
+Quiet and powerful (2 HPs -- horsepower specification, Ryobi's rating indicating has power of standard 2HP GDO. I have read several claims that Ryobi's 2HPs exceeds the standard 2HP measurement)
+Android/iPhone app works flawlessly.
+Push notifications
+Light has motion sensor
+Can open garage for someone locked out from app

Cons:
-Annoying high pitch beep cannot be disabled (It's a safety feature). Beep cannot be heard in the house.
-Only one username/account per GDO. You can however log on multiple devices at once without logging each other off.
-As far as I k now, you CANNOT use 3rd party universal openers (I have tried). Just have to stick to the Ryobi brand openers or the phone app.
-It is WAY to easy to accidently hit the "lock" button on the wall controller resulting in the confusion of why your wireless remotes cease working.

In conclusion, I love this GDO and removed 1 star for these reasons:
1) There is no way to "share" access either permanent or temporary with another person/roommate in the phone app and you must share your login credentials for others to use it, which I am not going to do)
2) Universal opener remotes do not work
3) There is currently no open API with Ryobi GDO so integrating it with Smart Things, ITTT, Amazon Echo, etc. IThis makes me sad

I hope that in the near future, features lacking in this possibly extremely awesome feature rich GDO can be added and pushed via an auto firmware update (which it does). When this day happens +1 more star :)

I really like the quit operation
by JRG -1985 (5 out of 5 stars)

I bought this opener about a year ago, I bought it for my house in Florida. I just installed it last week. Had a little trouble with getting the openers working properly, operator error. I really like the quit operation, the door itself is a little noisey, a metal door, I think it would be a lot quiter with a wood door. I haven't got to the accesories yet but I'm looking forward to installing them for the price of the openerthe battery should be included. I like the motion sensor light though

Best garage door open I have ever owned.

I don't understand the mediocre reviews on this product. I have two of them and have never had any issues. Smooth, quiet and ability to add peripheral devices. I believe Home Depot has discontinued these but parts (if you need them...I broke my keypad) are readily available.

It's okay. You're car has to be very close ...

It's okay. You're car has to be very close to the garage for it to close or open. The air accessory that you can buy separately doesn't work well for blowing up swimming flowties or blowup mattresses. Haven't tried it on tires yet.

If you want it to stay connected, forget about it.

This thing is terrible.

I have owned this owner for a little over 1 year. Replaced an older model that was noisy and this is very quiet.

Pros

Function is great. Opening and closing is a little slow at first but it gets moving once started.

Look is nice and clean.

So far I have only had to replace one remote. (My frustration trying to get it to close)

The wall button works every time and has a great rubber button pad.

Cons

The remotes are garbage...at $36 /ea it was hard to swallow getting an extra for the wife. (It is hooked up to a single door she has her own door, which still has the old loud one)

I digress, the remote works when it wants too...you have to be close to the door (cant do it from the street) and it may have to be "reconnected" to the unit.

The app is a mess at best. When the opener does connect to the app it takes a few tries before it will connect. If not then you will need to go through the wifi reconnect process. Major pain!

The outdoor keypad stopped working about 2 days after we installed it. After changing many batteries and reprogramming about 15 times we decided we didn't need it.

So all in all, I am trying to find a way to get rid of this one and find a different one to replace it.

Ryobi makes great drills/tools (everything I have is ryobi down to my weedwacker) but they need to stay away from garage door openers.

Buy a different brand...your wallet will thank you...and maybe your therapist too.

You WILL Love This Garage Door Opener

I did not purchase this on Amazon, but Home Depot. I paid a professional to install it. We've had this installed for about 2 months now and we really like it. The best thing about it is how SUPER quiet it is. We have a single story house and unless I'm in the room adjacent to the garage, I cannot hear this operating. If I'm standing in the front yard 10 feet from, I cannot hear it operating. It truly is SUPER quiet.

I cannot speak to the installation as I hired someone to do it.

I would have given this 5 stars if setting up the home link with our 2016 Acura RDX worked as advertised. I spoke with Ryobi customer service today and explained how nothing seems to work according the home link instructions and to ask him where the "smart or learning" button is on the head unit that home link says to use for rolling codes. Turns out there is no "smart or learning" button. However, he did suggest using the "un-programmed button on the remote while setting up the home link (the home link instructions say to use the programmed button). I will try this tonight and I will edit this review accordingly.

Edit #1: Well I've downgraded the review to 3 stars because Ryobi cannot offer any solutions to get this to work with home link. There is no "Learning" button on the Ryobi, so the normal rolling code programming will not work (if you're not sure what this is, refer to virtually any home link instructions). Ryobi's only suggestion was to try and program the B button on the remote instead of the A button. This too was a bust for me.

So really the only thing nice to say about this garage door opener is that it's super super quiet!

EDIT #2 -- November 1st, 2016

So after accidentally (and without knowing it) I or my wife hit the Vacation Lock button on the inside keypad. This of course disables the exterior keypad and remotes. So when the wife comes home saying her remote or the keypad isn't working, and neither of us even knowing about the Vacation Lock button, I feverishly (and quite unsuccessfully) go to troubleshoot and re-program the exterior keypad and remote. Feeling desperate I finally track down my owner's manual and read in the Troubleshooting section the cause for exterior keypads AND remotes not working, i.e., the dreaded Vacation Lock button. BUT, buried inside my owners manual is a Home Link instruction paper, which is quite different from anything from Ryobi on the Internet. Bottom Line - The Home Link button on my wife's Acura RDX now works as advertised and life is good. This garage door opener is far and away better than any I've ever owned.

PIECE OF CRAP!!
by divamatrix (1 out of 5 stars)

This thing looks cool but it's been nothing but a complete and utter failure on EVERYTHING. The wall part doesn't work right... you have to sit there pressing and/or holding the button to get it to go up and down correctly. I've got the fan but since it has multiple speeds, if you want to change it, you have to do it at the wall.. not from say.. the remote.

The WIFI is a joke! The wifi connectivity has been a complete FAIL. To start, you have to use the smart app to do this.
It FORCES you to use their wizard. So I start the process... it sees my network... I put everything in... it even makes the connection but gets to what I assume is negotiating getting the IP address and the wizard just sits there until you cancel. You can't manually assign an IP address to it. You can't manually put in the settings for your Garage door opener at all... the only way you can set up a garage door opener with the app is to use their wizard. I think it might even be getting a connection even since the wifi connection light is on... but I'll be damned if I can confirm that... and given that I'm very technical for work, I know what the specs say and it should be working fine. To make things worse...

The instructions for the wifi setup aren't actually included with the garage door manual!!! It mentions it.. but doesn't actually show you the instructions. To get those, you can go in the support area on the Ryobi Support area. In there, there's a link for the Wifi Connectivity System for Garage Door Opener... however, that link takes you to THE WRONG SUPPORT DOCUMENT... as in it's the manually for a completely unrelated tool. I cannot find anywhere on the site where the manual actually lives. When I put in a support ticket for the wifi issues, I think they either didn't read what I wrote or they think I'm stupid.. because the response I got for their support team is this: The app has instructions that I can read. Really?????

Finally, and this is the problem that makes me wanna shoot the damn thing: The light on the opener WILL NOT STAY OFF. I've followed the instructions which amount to... press the button and it will turn the light on or off... and nothing makes it stay off. There's nothing else about it ANYWHERE... not anywhere. Again... support guys were priceless. Their answer: If there is any motion in the garage, the light will stay on. Trust me when I tell you, that there is no motion anywhere that would be triggering the light.... and in fact, I even taped over the sensor.... and it still comes back on. So yeah.... save yourself from the grey hair and find something that's actually worth the time.

Product is O.K. but needs some improvements.
by Chet Hale (3 out of 5 stars)

I actually purchased this product at Home Depot. I've been using it for about 4-months now and my recommendation is to put off purchasing this product for now. I've found that the unit occasionally does not recognize the remote and will not operate. A short time later it does function correctly. The inner garage door button is extremely sensitive to the touch and frequently starts to open or close and then stops because it thinks you pushed the button twice (at least that's what I think is happening). The metal track that came with the device was very hard to put together correctly. I think this product has great potential however, RYOBI needs more time to iron out problems and improve the technology. I have not added any accessories except the backup battery because I am considering taking the unit out and purchasing a new unit from another more established garage door opener manufacturer. I hate to be out the $248.00 I spent but I guess I learned a lesson about purchasing a new product on the market just because I thought it would be neat to have.

I get more exercise now

I hate this thing so much. My husband can't just buy a plain old working regular item it has to have all the extras. My teens call him "extra" it fits. We bought 3 of these, one for each bay. We had them professionally installed. We had to have the installer come back 2 weeks later because that is how long they lasted. They don't always open, they beep constantly, sometimes it opens but only if you hold the button in the from start to finish. I haven't parked in my garage in months. I can't get the door to open and even if I did, I would be nervous I wouldn't be able to get back out. It was a week after the installer fixed them that they stopped working again... so now we wait. Just save yourself the hassle, just buy one that works over one that looks fancy.
