Bees didn't like the flow frames and quality is not on par with the price.

When I first saw the flow hive I thought it would be amazing. I watched all the videos of how easy it would be to harvest hone and that the quality was very high.

Not true. At least for me.

We had our first hive in the flow hive. The bees would climb all over the flow frame but NEVER stored anything no homey on the flow frames. We installed a second box between the bottom brood and flow frames and the bees COMPLETELY filled all the frames on it. Even when it was full, the bees did not store ANY honey in the flow frame.

After a single season the wood is cracking and not holding up. The flow hive kit is over twice the cost of most any other hive. I say save your money.

Big mistake

I took the 6 week bee course, bought the flow hive. Bees made a home in the lower brood box ,started filling up all the frames with brood and food, pollen and honey. Added the flow hive super , bees spent about two months just trying to fill the cracks in with propolis. I took the hive apart and noticed they had created 3 queen cells. I guess they were unhappy with the plastic flow hive supers. removed them and put standard frames in, they seem happy now. Do not waste your money on a flow hive. It might work in Australia or florida/texas or other hot climates, but did not work for me in va. Not happy at this point, I could have bought 3 complete hives for the cost of one flow hive. Recommend getting a normal hive , see how it goes, then maybe try a flow hive.

Flow... The true inventor of the product.

We were part of the original Indiegogo campaign which was the biggest Indiegogo start-up ever at the timeThey raised 17,380% of their goal (over $23 MILLION!). Despite that HUGE demand they delivered their product within a reasonable amount of time. We just assembled our hive box and it fit together reasonably well. The instructions included are adequate (if you have some little bit of experience with assembling things and you'll be fine). Our's was missing the queen excluder (you ship approximately 38,300+ kits and see if they all get 100% of the parts in them). I e-mailed Flow and I had a queen excluder in about 3 days! We get our bees this Saturday (April 29, 2017) so I'll update this later.

Just to be clear though... Bee keeping is a hobby. If you buy bees and pour them in your hive and come back in 3 months expecting there to be honey you will most likely come back to an empty hive and your bees will have died. Do your research and learn what is involved. It's not rocket science but it's not a honey vending machine either.

Your paying for their development costs. It's a slick system, but the wood is junk. The knobs fall off... I'll end up rebuilding my box around their flow frames. If you can buy the flow frames separate to that.

Think this may turn into an addiction!

I had been wanting to get into bee keeping for a few years and after heaps of research finally took the plunge and bought a Flow hive!

Package arrived super quick with no issues. Instructions were easy to follow and within about two hours was all put together ready for bees! The craftsmanship is amazing, fits together with no issues and only a few tools and can't beet that new cedar smell!

I got a nuke hive from my local bee keeping association and put them in, they got to work super quick building on their brood frames and have gone up into the super and making honey! So excited to harvest in the next month or so!

Some really great support material with the hive and their website helps you along if your are a new or experienced bee keeper!

Definitely think I'll be buying another one soon, so great to see so many pollinators in my high desert Southern California garden!

Not sure it's worth $700-1000

There seems to be quite a controversy concerning their retail price. In my opinion, I feel the folks who have this patent product have hiked the cost to best monopolize on this idea while the time last until consumers overcome the "˜hype' and novelty of thier bee hive product. It is a good idea to say the least, but they also know they can't sustain this cost in a "˜free market'. Other entrepreneurs without any needed patents have already begun to apprear with their lower priced product, and will force the "Official Flow Hive" folks to reduce their product cost. We all know how this works. It's assame these folks want to ride the "money train" at the high cost to the consumer. I think I'll wait as I can read in a lot of these posts, Flow Hive has already began to lower their quality standards. Good luck folks.

I just got around to putting the flow hive together and the viewing window (plastic) was not covered on one side with the protective film. Hence, one side is scratched pretty bad. The worst part is that the viewing window does not fit the wood cut out for the viewing window. Poor quality control. I have emailed them so I will let you know how the customer service is.

Beekeeping is identical with a Flow but the harvest will never be the same!
by Nanette Davis (5 out of 5 stars)

I was so excited to receive our original Flow Hive. The smell of the cedar upon opening the box was just as appealing as the rich tones of the wood. Since I had several other hives before the Flow, I knew that I would have to care for my bees and build the colony for a year before expecting any surplus honey to harvest. When the special day arrived it was amazing! We had watched the videos and read the tips from the Flow website to have all the jars ready and to only open the frames a few inches at a time. The clear honey came out without the bees stirring a bit. Not a single bee was harmed, unlike the traditional harvest where we remove the boxes and use an extractor. We didn't need to lift the heavy boxes or filter out any bees. The entire harvest was finished and in the jars in 30 minutes -and the bees can get right back to work if nectar is still available! Beekeeping is identical with a Flow Hive but the harvest will never be the same for me or the bees. Worth every penny!

bees no like, I no like
by johnny (1 out of 5 stars)

These are made for southern climates and do not work well in the north. I bought three and put them in a Langstroth hive during the honey flow and no honey, bees no like, I no like. Great idea but not for the beginner or above Massachusettes.

Price makes it prohibitive to the small and large beekeeper. With bees it comes to about $1000 per hive.

As far as I am concerned getting bees to make money on honey a bad investment and not good for the bees. Beekeepers become greedy.
