Very disappointed with this sand
by Peggy (1 out of 5 stars)
September 7, 2017

I was so disappointed in this sand. I have tried another brand of kinetic sand that was amazing. It clung together as if it was magnetic, leaving no mess either on the table surface or my hands. I thought this blue sand would be an amusing thing to have out on my coffee table to let people play with. I love National Geographic magazines and their specials, and I thought they would have a high quality sand. This sand was terrible. No, it was worse than terrible. It didn't clump together, it stained my fingers and the table surface blue, and it had no cool texture like the other brand I purchased does.b. There were also bits of sand all over the floor and table top as well. That shouldn't happen with the proper specialty sand. I packaged it back up and sent it back.

I then purchased the Kinetic sand here on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IG4YB5W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1&tag=c-t-20) and it was exactly the same as the sand that I remembered playing with in a store. It leaves no residue on your hands or your work surface. It clings together in the most amazing and satisfying way. I transferred it to a shallow wooden tray that I had and added a few homemade tools to add to the creativity. I fashioned a rake, a tiny shovel, and a few small shaped cup-like containers for building with. These were all made from Fimo and bamboo skewers. I haven't had company in the last few days since I put it out on the table, but I have found myself picking up the tray and playing with it myself. It is oddly satisfying and I am amazed that it isn't messy at all. And it does not dry out. I strongly urge you NOT to buy this product or you will be disappointed. And blue. Pick up the other brand to see what this sand is supposed to be like.

I would not recommend.

I had something similar that I bought at a chain crafts store and don't recall having the problems I've had with this sand. I find this sand sticks to my children's clothes and hands and is impossible to get off rugs. It almost seems to stain both skin and fabric. Not sure if it has to do with the bright color or the quality of the product. Either way, I would not recommend.

We bought this sand to add to our kinetic sand stash and I am so sad that I mixed it with our other sand as it is very poor quality. It is much less sticky than our other sand which means it instantly got all over clothing and the floor. The pigment came off on my child's hands and clothing.

Horrible. Had to put a little water just to try and moisten it after leaving out for more than an hr like the directions said. Stained our hands and a complete mess.

Fun, but makes a mess

My little girl loves it, but it makes a huge mess. I thought the sand would stay together better. Fine pink dusk everywhere.

More like Play-Doh

Worst kinetic sand ever. It's more like play doh.... that's almost dried out. If choosing between Nat Geo sand and the Kinetic Sand Brand, choose the Kinetic.

In the picture attached the darker purple sand is Kinetic Sand and on the left is the Nat Geo "Sand"

50 50 shot.

I bought the red 2lb and it's great. It was a hit at work which can be stressful a lot. I loved it so much I gave them the red one for work and bought myself the green. It was such a disappointment. I couldn't tell if it was too dry or wet. I let it sit out for 4 days and it didn't change. So I added a few drops of water and no change. Added more and still no change, it just became wet sand. So I read up on the ingredients and figured it needed cornstarch or soap. Tried cornstarch and it didn't do anything but make it dry again. So I added a little dawn and a few drops of water and it didn't change. The red sand was airy and this was just wet sand. I gave up and have it to my 9 year old step son who poured a ton more soap in it and now it's a disaster for him to play in. So disappointed especially with it being a reputable brand.

In the end if you buy, you run the chance of getting a wonderful product or a box of colored sand.

Update: Tried my luck again and it worked pretty well. It did come dry, but I put half a teaspoon of water and it worked great. If you are having problems with your sand don't put more than a couple drops of water. I was skeptical. Two drops in two pounds of sand? That's isn't going to do anything. Shockingly it does. Mix the sand up for a good minute. Just like making hamburger meat and mixing in spices and what not. Rotate it all around. If it still doesn't seem right do a drop at a time. If you put one drop too much you will notice the sand clumping and you now have to wait for it to dry which takes an hour at least.

The original sand that didn't work was the glow in the dark. It did glow but that's about it. The other two I bought were the red and green. They are still a hit.

Another thing to note is the color. When you play you get some dye transfer on your hands. The red was a little prominent but we have Clorox wipes everywhere. Comes right off. The green I didn't notice barely anything. I imagine the blue, purple, and other bright colors would, but it depends on what you are using for. Mine was at work so I couldn't walk around with red hands, but like I said the Clorox wipes tookl it off with no problem. Didn't even have to scrub.

Good luck guys!

UPDATED REVIEW

Omg, y'all do not know that the struggle is real. So, I look over at my dog and realize the white on her fur is dingy. I squint a little and realize she is not in fact just dingy. Her white fur is in fact pink. Like the foofy pink people pay to dye their dogs. Only no professional dye was involved. My four year old has been playing with red kinetic sand that gets everything pink/red. He cannot seem to leave the dog alone. Before he left yesterday he was playing with the kinetic sand and then was messing around with the dog in between. Thus, logic dictates he inadvertently dyed the dog with red kinetic sand. Don't ask me why I failed to notice this for nearly twenty-four hours. I iz tired. I iz mom. I iz busy.

P.S. My dog has not been harmed by the experience and her skin is unaffected. Her hair alone is just pleasantly pink for awhile.

P.S.S. Do not buy the National Geographic version of kinetic sand. Unless you really want to redecorate your dog and home.

Buyr, be aware

It does not feel like sand. It is more like play dough. I think the name of the product is misleading. If you are looking for kinetic sand, this product is not for you.

Hours of fun for kids

Very hard and dry feeling when you first open the bag but do not add water. Yes, it will feel like a dry brick. Fluff it up with your hand and let it sit and it does get soft and fluffy just like the images. Did not stain hands or anything else unless you use wet hands or get the sand wet. We squeezed it and smashed it into cookie cutter molds and never had any stains and it made the most gorgeous molded pieces (see photos).
