Works Great - Sides Warp After Use - Needs a Few Modifications
by mike_wood (3 out of 5 stars)
October 10, 2018

I have had this burn cage for over a month to burn yard debris. I also purchased the base which I feel makes burning faster and more complete. I end up with nothing but fine ash. I highly recommend it. Works as advertised.

Why only 4 stars? Because I do have some suggestions and one problem. Look at the photo attached. One side warped after the first burn. Would be less of a problem if I left it up all the time but after it cools I disassemble and store in my garden shed. I don't see any point in leaving it out to rust when I am not using it. This warp makes it hard to assemble. Each time I have to use some "persuasion" to get it assembled. Not a huge deal but it would be better if it did not happen.

I have some suggestions to the manufacturers that I think would make it more user friendly. 1. Design the feet for the base so the tabs can be bent after assembly. The feet cannot be secured so fall off easily. Sort of a pain when putting it back together. Constantly falling off. If the feet tabs could be bent a little they would not fall off. 2. Put a 1-2" hole at the bottom just above the base. The way it is designed now the only way to start a fire is from above. Again, kind of a pain as one has to drop everything down. If there was a hole at the base I would use a torch to start a fire. But even if one did not use a torch there should be a place to insert a match or lighter. 3. I would be great if the tabs for the top were bent so it could be securely place on the cage. Once a fire is going it is really hot and even with welding (or fireplace) gloves one cannot linger to place the top on. Placing the top on just using the handle requires the user to put hand/arm over the flames. Clearly not a good idea. The other way is to hold each side an place it on the top. Again requiring the user to get too close. If I have to walk away for awhile I want the top on for safety reasons. It is easy to get it on at at angle and not that hard to drop it in entirely. With a bent tabs it seems it would be easy to catch the back tab using the handle then it will be somewhat aligned and then drop it down. Maybe tabs is not the best way to do make it easier to put the top on but some thought needs to go into this.

I have used the cage a lot and like it alot but some modifications would be great.
12.12.18 update: I have used this cage a lot and the sides continue to warp (see pic). At this point all sides have warped quite a bit so I have to use a rubber hammer to put it together. It is a challenge to get it back together. At some point all owners wiil need to assemble/disassemble if they are to apply the precribed linseed oil which will be problematic if their cage warps like mine. The sellers need to address this problem. There are other similar products sold and I would be open to looking at competitors product if I needed to buy again. I am reducing to 3 stars as the warping is a PITA for me as I assemble/diassemble with each use.

Buy This Pyro Cage! - Not The Cheap Knockoffs
by H-DRider (5 out of 5 stars)
May 3, 2018

We have been looking for a solution for our backyard debris for months. We have several years' worth of dead branches and leaves that won't go away by them self. I wanted something safer than a 55 gallon drum. We decided that a burn cage would be the best solution. I searched Amazon as well as other sites including DR. The DR cage was smaller and more expensive than Bad Idea's Pyro Cage 48" Incinerator. Buying American is very important to me. This cage is made in the USA with American steel AND it has a lifetime warranty. I ordered it on Thursday and received it the following Tuesday, one day earlier than expected. It came in 2 boxes and both were heavier than expected - in a good way. Setup was quick and easy. I set 4 concrete pavers on the ground with space between them and set the cage on the pavers. I was clearing debris within minutes. Once you set it up it is not going to move until you're ready to move it. I have over 14 hours of burn time in less than 2 days and I still had hot coals this morning after 12 hours. I am completely satisfied with my purchase. I highly recommend this Pyro Cage for your backyard debris.

GREAT REPLACEMENT FOR THE DRUM
by REEFERMAN (5 out of 5 stars)
August 25, 2018

I had considered the burn cage from DR but the cost and complaints of thin metal warping cancelled the idea. Bad Idea is the best choice for me. much larger than a 55 gal drum and with the air intakes it burns paper evenly. I plan to weld a handle on the top cover as to stay further back from the heat. The slotted panel connections allow the box to self adjust to uneven ground as I have it on 16x16x4 solid capping blocks. After several hot burns I will sandblast the panels and use hi temp manifold paint . .03c Lee

UPDATE 9/5/2018

I burn 2 days per week so this cage gets a workout. I used my tractor with a boom attachment to lift the complete cage and leave the ash pile. After washing away the 16" column of ash I simply set it back in place. Do not leave the wet ash piled up for long periods of time as this will decrease the life of the cage. That is why fire drums only last me 3 months. This open bottom will keep the rusting to a minimum. After several cleanouts I flip the panels around to allow the metal to warp in the opposite direction. Works for me

Great burn cage! Well designed and easy to set up. The unique slots allow for great air flow for quick burning of private documents or yard debris. Once the steel cools down it is easy to dismantle and store the pieces in your garage or shed. Worth the $$$. Proud to buy this American made product!

becomes deformed after only a few uses (with addendum)
by Steven C. Shaffer (3 out of 5 stars)
March 27, 2019

ADDENDUM: The company sent me an entirely new barrel, so we will see what happens with that. I've bumped the rating up one for customer service -- if this one lasts better, I will re-review in a few weeks.

OLD REVIEW:

So, I guess I figured any company with the guts to call themselves "Bad Idea" must have a good product.

This worked great for about a half dozen burns, but then the lid began to deform and so now there is not a good connection between the lid and the body, allowing larger embers to escape during the burn, which is what I was trying to avoid.

I bought this product for $300+ figuring it would be worth the cost, but I was sadly mistaken :-(

Works Fairly Well
by Charles Palmer (4 out of 5 stars)

While still a little pricey for basically a 55 gallon perforated drum, it setup easy and I have had continued burn for several days at a time. Pros: 1) burns VERY hot so minimizes the ashes flying in the air, 2) really quick to get a flame going (using lighter fluid) -- even in very humid conditions, and 3) makes quick work of reducing a brush pile. However, there are some Cons (not enough for me to return it, but I am sure there are folks out there that want something perfect and would return it): 1) upon the first fire, the incinerator warps fairly drastically (not sure if I will be able to disassemble to move due to the interlocking tabs, 2) the fire burns from the bottom up and will go out if you do not continually push the debris to the bottom (basically, a gap will occur between the bottom burn and the debris you load into the top and the fire will go out), 3) like others have said, it definitely could have been a larger diameter. Overall, if you can get over the sticker shock (you could basically go to a metal shop and buy the sheet metal for about $50 -- though you won't have the vents that actually make this work), it is handy to have around a large yard.

Great!
by Peter T. Brown (5 out of 5 stars)

I thought it crazy to spend this much money on a burn cage. I didn't even know they existed before I bought it. But: it's worth it. Safe burning, hot enough to turn large amounts of wood to practically nothing. Saved us tons of money in hauling charges, and made it possible to clean the property right. If you're thinking you need to burn, get one, you won't be disappointed.

This is an amazing invention. The only way I could suggest improving it would be to provide a handle for the cover. If anyone has any ideas on how to handle the hot cover, I'd appreciate it.

Suggestions for use of this product on sloping ground

Comments on the "Bad Idea Pyro Cage 48" Incinerator"

Let me say that I like my incinerator, very much. It was easy enough to assemble, even if it was a bit heavy. As an engineer, I fully understand the need for heavy gauge of steel used for this incinerator. Being a senior citizen, I likely should have used one of the grandsons to help with movement of the incinerator. The incinerator is attractive in its construction and does the job quite well.

Here are some useful suggestions concerning the use of the incinerator:
◉ I have been clearing a lower yard area of much downed trees and limbs. The lower yard is on a bit of a slope .... About 20 degrees. I bought this incinerator to allow me to control burn of this brush.
◉ For the initial test burn with burning brush, I set the incinerator over a dead stump. I then filled the incinerator with small twigs and limbs that were cluttering the lower yard. For this burn, I set the incinerator up on the natural grade of the ground (with about a 20 degree slope). I understood the unit was out-of-level so I placed a heavy concrete downspout against the downslope side of the incinerator in hope this would keep the incinerator from turn over. Note: The incinerator is top heavy when the heavy cover is placed on the incinerator.
◉ I started the test burn and placed the lid on the incinerator. Everything went well for 15 minutes. As the incinerator contents burned they shifted positions and the incinerator turned over. I intentionally stayed close in the event of such a collapse. See attached photo.
◉ For my next burn, I set the incinerator up around another stump, but this time I placed the concrete downspout under the downslope side to level the incinerator. Additionally, I used rebar tie-wire to secure the two upslope corners using long tent stakes. See attached photos.

The second burn went quite well. The incinerator contained the fire nicely.

There are two further process improvements I will employ for my third burn. First, I will tie something to each length of tie-wire to act as a flag to improve the visibility to minimize tripping over the wire. Second, it would be good the clean any pine needles away from the downslope edge of the incinerator as that edge is a bit elevated compared to ground level to mitigate chances of the fire leaving the underside of the incinerator enclosure.

I think this is a very good product. With the small process improvements, noted above, the incinerator performs its function admirably.

Great burn cage.
by Jonathan (4 out of 5 stars)
June 4, 2019

I've had this cage for about 2 months, and so far I have really liked it. I originally ordered it to burn wood, but it's mainly become one to help with old papers and trash. When I use wood though, it is perfect for summer night fires. I especially like the way the Bad Idea Logo lights up, like in the picture.

The only small drawbacks I've noticed so far is that, like others have mentioned, the cage does warp enough that the lid will not fit properly after having very hot fires. However, it's not a huge deal to me, because when I do burn wood and logs, typically some of the branches are taller than the cage anyway, so I wouldn't have been able to use the lid. I also wish the riser would have been included, instead of having to be purchased separately. It really does help a lot with burning papers, and even with wood, so it seems almost like a necessity rather than an add-on. That would be the only reason I would put this at a four, compared to other cages that already rise off the ground.

Overall, if you are on the fence about buying this, then step off and get on the purchase side. It's a great cage.
