Suitable power bank, premium price point
by Robert H (3 out of 5 stars)
October 29, 2017

I bought the SOS20K to add to my emergency kit after Hurricane Irma swept through Florida and knocked out power throughout the state. Some of my coworkers were without electricity for a week after the fact, and I wanted some peace of mind in having a way to charge my phone and other gadgets. I had just bought a pair of solar powered radios from Eton, but these didn't have quite the capacity that I felt would support all my devices for an entire week. Thus, I decided to try the SOS20K. In some ways I am quite pleased with it, but it falls short in other categories. I would like to cover the positive points first:
++ Seems very sturdy - As soon as you pick it up, you can tell it is not just a flimsy piece of plastic covering a solar panel and battery pack. The eyehole where the carabiner clips on is a sturdy part of the case; leaps and bounds over a metal or plastic rod or hook that will break off at a moment's notice. The carabiner itself that came with my battery also has a part that screws into place to prevent it from opening. This last detail gives me a bit of confidence that someone isn't going to run up and snatch the battery off of my backpack before I notice what's going on.
++ mah Capacity appears to be as advertised - A lot of power bank manufacturers are grossly overstating their units' capacities in an attempt to dupe people into buying them. As one youtube reviewer put it, they seem to be in a contest to see who can make the most ridiculous claims. As a test, after fully charging the unit via USB cable, I was able to charge my LG Stylo phone several times from ~30% to full, my Nintendo 3DS from empty to full, and top off my noise cancelling headphones battery, and still had two LED indicators worth of power left.
++ four charging ports - two more than any other brick power bank I've seen. Very useful if you have a lot of gadgets, or a lot of people wanting to charge devices.
++ prompt reply from customer service - when I thought I might have had a problem with my bottom two charging ports (see below) I wrote an e-mail to customer service asking about it. They responded within a few hours on the same day.

However, there were certainly some drawbacks to this device:
-- Bottom charging circuit turns off, even though the blue LED power indicators suggest it is active - This is the issue over which I ended up contacting customer service, as I thought the bottom two ports were defective. As it turns out, the battery is equipped with a smart auto shutoff feature to save power. Also, the battery has to be activated via the power button before it will charge any device plugged in. However, if you wait too long to plug in a device to one of the bottom ports, even if something is charging from the top ports, the bottom charging ports will turn off. This surprised me at first, as I expected to be able to charge from any of the ports at any time the unit was on. The fix was simple enough; turning the battery off and back on will cause both devices to start charging. In the end, I think it is a wiser idea to have the ports turn off to save power, even if the power indicator says otherwise, so I would classify this one as a minor design flaw at most. Perhaps future designs could have an independent power indicator for the separate top and bottom sets of ports.
-- battery capacity listed is for voltage rating closer to 3.7 volts, not 5 volts - as can be seen on the capacity rating listed on the back, the device has a 75watt hour capacity. The reason this is slightly problematic is that the power supplied from the USB charging ports has to be at 5 volts to match what's expected by the device plugged in to charge. A 75watt hour battery supplying power at 5 volts can have at most 15,000mah equivalent capacity. Further, according to my research, the conversion process itself causes a loss of energy, so one cannot count on all of said power to go to charging devices. This is not as much a negative as it could be, however, as I found out after doing some research; using internal power storage components rated at 3.7 volts seems to be a widely accepted industry standard for power bank manufacturers. On the other hand, from what I read about the unit on Amazon and the company website, I did believe I was getting a 100watt hour battery, especially considering the price point.
-- difficulty charging the battery via solar panel -- As a second test, I fully charged the battery via usb and then used it to charge my phone to just up to the point where I had only three remaining LED power indicators. I then set the device on my window sill to charge in the sun, checking periodically over four days. The final day I shuffled the battery around the house to make sure that it sat in as much sunlight as possible. The sunlight was so strong that even behind the window blinds, the green LED charging indicator was still on. However, after all that time, the battery still showed only three LED power lights. When I again placed the battery on the USB charging cable, the fourth indicator turned on after about 5 minutes of charge. This unfortunately means that either the solar charger feature of the battery I received was defective, or else the unit cannot be fully charged using just the solar panel. Another test might be warranted to check its behavior when the battery gets to a much lower level, but even if that's the case, the fact that the charge isn't "topped off" in the sun until going below a certain point diminishes the value of the solar charger feature.
-- Finally, assuming the solar panel will charge the battery correctly in my follow-up tests, the biggest point of criticism I would give the SOS20k is the price point. At $139, it is roughly 4x as expensive as the next model down that I considered buying: the OUTXE 16000mah. This might make the OUTXE a better choice for an emergency hurricane kit, but maybe less so for campers or hikers, who would be more concerned about size and weight of their gear.

To summarize, it appears that the company's claim of wanting to make the single best model of brick power bank is not unfounded, however it is definitely up to the buyer to determine whether the sturdiness and upgraded capacity is worth the price hike. I would have been more satisfied if the unit had been more free from issues, but overall it will do the job for which I originally bought it, so I will grant it 3 stars out of 5.

Rugged, well thought out design

I bought this for my neighbor who is taking it on a big Alaska trip in May. I will update this review when she returns. For me, I'll be ordering another to strap to my pack. I am very impressed with the quality of this device, and I will put it through its paces as we do alot of cold weather camping. Will also take a beating out in other seasons, since we go rain, shine, thunderstorms, whatever. Good job on the design, I expect it will measure up to the long term use and abuse too. I will also update here on my own devices progress.

UPDATE ALASKA

It worked perfectly. It went on a dog sledding trip, a bush plane flight, a helicopter flight... went from the Bering Straight to the Arctic Circle. Worked great, no failures and consistently charged a constantly on Go pro.

Winter is coming quickly in NH, so I will update again when I get this out in the hard cold.

this is a really good product. from the packaging to the product it is seen that it is an excellent quality, I am impressed. I am in the garden all day and I need a reliable source of energy to connect my phone and keep it charged (I use Iphone). The first thing I did was to charge the solar battery with the cable provided. From the day I charged the phone, until today (4days later) I haven't have to charge the battery with the cable because the solar charger keeps the battery fully charged. I found another use to the Power Bank with Flashlight, yesterday I needed light to take a picture because is was too dark, I solved the problem using the flashlight that comes with the battery pack, the light is powerful enough to be use it as light for your picture when you don have any other source of light. I am very satisfied with the purchase and I recommend 100%.

It has been amazing and holding up great out here in Oklahoma. I actually was able to use it this past Easter. The power went out and I was able to charge mine and my girlfriend's phone with no issues. I purchased it for my everyday carry bag, but since that incident it's definitely going in my emergency bag. You all did an amazing job with this product.

A Durable Charger with Loads of Storage
by Gerald F. (5 out of 5 stars)
June 10, 2017

Great product, very sturdy and built to last for years. Just hanging on a backpack as you travel would definitely take its toll on the average charger. It charges not only my phone, but my wife and sons phone with energy to spare. This product may be considered heavy to some. The extra heft makes it a more solid and able to take some unintentional abuse and keep on charging. I would highly recommend this charger to anyone looking for high storage and durability.

Rugged unit, works as described

So far so good. Battery charges via USB, and via solar, unit charges fully and charges other devices. I see what people are talking about, regarding the poor design of the port covers... Would be 5 stars if they port covers were designed better, so you don't loose them. The charge port is micro USB... would have been better if it was USB-B or USB-C.

Received the product in a very nice packaging, was secure and snug

Received the product in a very nice packaging, was secure and snug. I opened the package and the Battery had an excellent high quality premium feel to it. This is much larger and heavier than my previous 10Ah-12-Ah batteries but it should be worth it because I'm not using it for backpacking or camping but basic airplane travels and car travels. I tested out the plugs, all of them work at the correct amperage and power delivery. Very great product, excellent, quality, would highly recommend

5 Stars X2. Took this bad boy out on my camping trip in Alaska (Denali). We charged up a couple phones, go pro, & kept our mini speaker going. Super impressed with how well it held the charge. It held up through the rain and rugged hike up the mountain. Really awesome buy.

Heavy, but really is a great tool.

Tons of capacity, great for so many different uses. 20K mAh, is killer, but the build quality is really good. Only dings: Opening up the top USB charging ports is a pain, and it weighs a heck of a lot. Keep the weight in mind if you're using this for extended hiking or other outdoor uses. Comes w/ two lightning and two micro USB charging cables, too. Great build quality!!

The coolest best, awesomest quality product USB power bank i have ever owned... its freakin' bullet proof (haven't tested that theory, but it is durable) and waterproof. Yes its heavy for a 20,000 mAh... but it can charge most items ten times.. blinks to show the amount of battery it has left and takes one nite to charge up to 100%. i will buy another for sure...
