A: The laser measurement reference is fixed at the back edge of the LTM1, opposite the laser pointer (where the battery compartment is). It takes into account the length of the body of the tape measure in the reading. Q: Can I change the unit of the Laser measurement? A: Measurements are only displayed in feet and fractional inches. Metric is not available on the LTM1. Q: How does the laser distance measure part work? A: The laser measurement system works by shining a laser beam on a target. The time it takes for the reflection of the beam to return to the tool is used to calculate the distance to the target. Q: Can laser measurement work without the red laser beam? A: No, the laser beam is needed to get a measurement when using the laser function. The tape can be used for manual measurements at any time. Q: What are possible reasons why a reading could be incorrect? The laser pointer is unsteady or moving too quickly. To steady the laser, press the back of the tool (the side with the battery compartment) against a flat subject such as the wall or floor. The target is closer than the minimum range of 10 in or beyond the maximum range of 50 ft. The surface of the target is too reflective. You can make a target plate on the surface using tape or a piece of paper. There is too much bright, visible light on the target. Providing shade or creating a dark target plate on the surface can fix this. The target is able to absorb incoming IR radiation and reflects nothing back to the tool. Examples would be plasma TV’s or computer monitors. Again, creating a target plate would be the solution. The target is too transparent to get a proper reading. A target plate will be necessary to get the measurement. The ambient temperature is outside the specified operating range (32ºto 104ºF). Q: How do I retract the tape measure? A: The tape lock release button is on the bottom of the tape measure. Q: Why is my unit not turning on? A: Make sure to check the direction your batteries. The battery in the (+) slot should be placed positive side facing out toward you, and the one in the (-) slot should be placed negative side facing out toward you. When I first saw this, it thought, "Awesome idea, but will it really work?". I have to say, it is AWESOME and does exactly what it is supposed to do.

A 16 foot tape is not always enough, but typically gets the job done. And even when using a longer tape, like 25" or longer, your accuracy is not great, particularly when you are measuring alone. The 50' laser built into this tape measure works GREAT!. It is easy to change from using the tape, to the laser with one hand, particularly because the tape automatically stands out in a locked position, unlike most others where you have to lock with another hand. When you retract the tape, you can easily press the laser for a further distance and the screen (although a little small), points right at you when you put it against the wall.

A lot of stuff like this feels like junk or a toy, but this feels like a professional tool in your hand and works like one too. I actually took a chance (knowing I could return it) and bought 3 (one for my house, one for my dad and one for my brother for Father's Day). The one thing I would change is the packaging. Seems like there might be gold in this package, based on what you need to do to get the batteries out (which are energizer, not cheap china batteries), but I guess that is not the end of the world. Great job on this one General Tools! Being a family of contractors and DIY people, this is a tool that is long overdue and one that everyone tool and/or even a gadget person needs to have. It will eliminate climbing ladders in many cases and needing another set of hands for estimating and doing simple layout.

UPDATE:

After a few weeks of using this, I'm very frustrated with the TINY display and FEET + Fraction. I need the ability to have inches, so I don't have to convert 6 ft 7 inches to inches in my head every single time. You went through all this trouble to make this good tape measure, wish you'd go the extra way and make it more usable.

Now back to my original review----------------------

This does work, there's some good things and bad things...

Pros:
- Accurate, repeatable
- Good quality build
- Tape retracts well

Cons:
- The display is upside-down from the position of the button facing you. So you have to turn it around to read
- It only shows distance in feet and fractions in inches. Cannot switch to inches only. For me this is more trouble than anything
- Display is sooo small that you have to squint to read. The actual digits are about 1/10" tall. Ridiculous

Received today, tried it out and WOW, what a POS. If you set it on a level floor, the laser points to the floor a few feet ahead. I don't know how this thing is getting positive reviews unless they got them for free. The LCD display is bubbly under the hard plastic screen, the whole thing is a giant POS. Avoid at all costs, I'll upload photo's of just how horrible and inaccurate this thing is in a few days.

Blade, end tab is particularly sturdy for hooking. Approx 1/2" long - reinforced with three rivets.

Use - conventional ruler for under 10 inches.

So - the back of the tape measure needs to be against the surface you measure from.

If one doesn't realize this is the reference point, ya may think the measure is 3" off - BUT it isn't.

First time turns it on - Second time reads.

When estimating for my work I used to carry around a tape measure and a laser measure. I have been waiting for a combo like this and before righting this review, I used this product for one year and I just it 5 days a week. It has stood up to the abuse very well. The tape could be stronger and longer. The laser works up to 50' and seems to be enough for my daily use. Give this a try.

Bought two of these...one I couldn't get the battery door off to put in the batteries and the other one we gave to my 93 year old father in law. He used to be a carpenter and now has some challenges getting around. He loved this because he can measure with the laser without having to use the traditional tape measure...although that was still available on this should he want to use it. It was very accurate.

Accurate, when it reads. Works best indoors under 20 feet. Useless outdoors under any light condition. Don't waste your money buying this expensive, bulky, 16' tape measure. Tape works great. Laser not so much.

The product arrived in good condition and on time. It is of good quality and very helpful in my building projects. I love the way you can use it one handed and when you retract it, it doesn't slap around. It retracts nice and smoothly.

This tape measure is wonderful! Spot on measurements too. Makes measuring very long things easy and no more having to pull out the tape and drag it across the wall or yard trying to measure the fence, etc.

I'm preparing to purchase and renovate a house, so I need to measure room dimensions, width of trim, and everything in between. I chose this item because it had exactly the features that I wanted and none that I didn't. KISS principle and all that.
* Laser shows measurements in feet and inches (no option for just inches, decimals, or metric) in a nice large display (plus to nearest 1/16 inch but very small).
* Laser measures from back of unit only.
* Laser measurement display shows the most recent measurement until it turns off automatically after about 15 seconds (or hold the button down for 3 seconds).
* Tape stays out until you press the retract button.

Unit weight is 11.1 ounces.

Setup was easy with the included batteries and tiny screwdriver. Operation is intuitive, since the button only does 4 things: on, set up the laser, show measurement, and off. The instruction booklet is very small and easy to overlook, since operation is just two steps ("Press once to find target. Press again for measurement."). About 20 test measurements were accurate when compared to previous measurements done with a regular tape measure.

There is one thing I would change: The laser measurement display is right-side up when the unit is held in the right hand; if it was reversed, then I could be recording measurements with my right hand while doing the button-pressing with my left. However, the display being on top is more convenient than the side display that I saw on other units.
