Well constructed; easy to use and provides rapid and seemingly accurate temperatures.

An unwieldy size. A more compact design would facilitate storage.

It lives up to it's name: Good (Grips)...but not great.

Prime but Pricey

OXO usually makes excellent products, and this instant-read meat thermometer seems to be no exception.

I have a ThermoPro thermometer on hand, which has worked well for several years, and wondered what the OXO brought to the party.

The OXO is a bit larger than the TP and offers a large LED readout rather than the TP's LCD one. That makes the OXO easier to read, especially in low-light conditions like at an evening barbecue outdoors.

The OXO also eliminates the on/off button -- you turn the unit on and off by unfolding the metal temperature probe, which you can pull open by hand or use the white knob at the probe's hinge so as not to touch and contaminate the probe.

Compared to the TP, the OXO seems to give a temperature reading a little faster, and the probe has a tapered end, which makes it easier to judge the right depth to insert the probe into meat for an optimal reading.

The only glitch -- a minor one -- came upon initial setup. After I inserted the two AAA batteries supplied in the battery compartment, the unit didn't work. It turned out that I needed to rotate one or both batteries to make proper contact, and all was well.

For this reason, buyers may wish to keep the battery compartment open until you confirm that the batteries are making good contact. The compartment then closes with a screw, a slight inconvenience.

There are tiny switches inside the battery compartment to select between Farenheit and Centigrade or to eliminate the zero after the decimal point when a temperature reading is a whole number. Again, you need a small screwdriver to adjust the switches.

The thermometer also comes with a microfiber storage pouch, a nice touch.

So if I like the OXO so well, why have I deducted a star from my rating? Because of the high price currently listed on Amazon -- $100.

Ouch! Other instant-read thermometers -- including a new one from ThermoPro that also has an LED readout -- typically run around $30 or less.

Is the OXO worth $70 more? In my opinion, no, but if you're a Martha Stewart type who has the means and inclination to have the ultimate kitchen gadgets, then the OXO is for you...

PROS:

* Storage pouch and batteries included.

CONS:
* Triple the price of competing models.
* Screwdriver needed to access batteries, adjust settings.

I will never use another thermometer!

If I could give SIX stars I would. I've tried DOZENS of meat thermometers and most of them died when I even threatened to wash the probe in the sink. But not this. Used now for the entire summer, sometimes falling into a wet sink, always being cleaned after use, the water has NOT effected this. No - I would not put it in the dishwasher though!

The item turns on when you fold out the probe and turns off eventually if not in use. I wish this time was a bit longer as otherwise I need to close and open it to "reset" when cooking for a time. But that's balanced out by the super bright and large OLED numbers (other ones I've used are mostly LCD and cannot be read at all in the twilight I usually grill at).

Another great feature, turn it upside down and the temperature also flips so you get the right reading. It's like a freakin' smartphone!

Love this! Hopefully it will be my last meat thermometer.

Love the Big Illuminated Readout

The Temperature numbers are big and glowing.

This is a larger than most of these thermometers, which I don't mind, since I am not carrying around in my pocket. Come to think of it, my pockets are plenty big enough for this thing. See picture.
-As with most of these fold-out instant thermometer, the response is quick and accurate.
-It takes 2 aaa batteries to supply the extra power needed by the LED display. The battery case screws shut.
-The C/F switch and decimal select switch are inside the battery compartment.
-No magnet. Won't stick to the fridge.
-As with most, the power comes on when the probe is extended, with auto shut off if you leave it open.

Great Grilling Accessory

Just in time for gilling season! This oxo thermometer is blazing fast and easy to use. The screen is cler, bright and readable. The probe rotates so accurate readings may be had at any ngle. The required batteries are included asis a thoughtful carrying pouch. I've copared it with my other thermometers nd it is accurate. celan up is super simple. while the price gives me paause the ease of oepration nd high ZOXO quality make this great grilling accessory.

Pricey but worth it

I bought this item in spite of the price because it came highly recommended by America's Test Kitchen. I was not disappointed. Given I typically use it on meats it is mission critical that the thermometer be accurate. I found this unit to be excruciatingly accurate. It also rotates beyond 180 degrees which is handy when working with larger meats and odd shapes birds. The display is easy to quickly read. It has a nice ergonomic feel to it so it handles naturally. The price is a beast but I've used it heavily for 6 months and no issues. I anticipate it will be a long lasting tool.

Quick and easy temperature reading

I like how quickly this takes the temperature. It literally just takes seconds to get an accurate reading, and you don't have to insert it super deep into the meat. There are no buttons to press or worry with. It turns on simply by rotating the probe out. The numbers also will rotate based on the orientation of the probe. Cleaning was easy. I usually just wipe off the tip of the probe with a warm, soapy rag.

I also like that it comes with a bag for storage when not in use.

Easy to Use

This thermometer is SUPER easy to use! Just flip out the probe, stick it into the thickest part of the item you're cooking and ta-da. SO DANG EASY! It's also super accurate as well. I had an older thermometer that was similar but the batteries died really quickly and the temps were hard to read. This so far has lasted and the temperature is easy to see. Will be coming in handy as the holidays come!

Ideal Kitchen Thermometer

This a fantastic food thermometer. It works super fast and is nice and sleek. I am not sure it is worth the steep price compared to my other trusty thermometer, but it works very well and is a great addition to my kitchen.
