Does what it sets out to do beautifully. Question is, does it meet your needs?
by Matt Greer (5 out of 5 stars)
November 12, 2017

I've now had this monitor for four days. I will update this review periodically as I own it longer. I've had no sleeping/resuming issues at all as others have reported. I am using Windows 10 and Ubuntu 16.04 and the monitor 100% works flawlessly with both. I give this monitor 5 stars because it accomplishes what it set out to do perfectly. But buyer beware, you need to know what you're getting with this beast. The 1080 vertical resolution doesn't bother me at all. I can now comfortably put three windows side by side to do my work and that alone is worth the price of admission. Gaming wise this thing is fantastic. I have paired it with a Radeon Vega 64 and since it only has half the number of pixels a 4k monitor has, all games run beautifully. Freesync works from 48hz up to 144hz. I am finding most games can handle 3840x1080 rather well, and really recent games handle it perfectly. The view is so immersive, it's just fantastic. This monitor has a DPI of about 80. If you're like me and have been using high DPI monitors for the past few years, this is a pretty, er, striking regression. Yes, you can really see pixels easily on this thing. No, fonts don't look that great (fonts look a little better in Ubuntu than Windows, but regardless nowhere near the beauty a high DPI monitor would provide). To me this is the only real compromise you need to make with this monitor. The gaming and productivity gains I get far outweigh this setback for me. This monitor has no speakers at all. I have it mounted on my monitor arm with no problems. The monitor weighs 33lbs which is the upper limit on my arm. Getting it mounted was quite the chore and nearly led to my wife divorcing me, but we did it. UPDATE 1: I've now been using this monitor for work quite a bit and I have to say I love it. I can fit everything I need comfortably onto the screen. No more switching desktops. It's been a great productivity and "staying in the zone" boost. UPDATE 2: I've now had this monitor for 2 months and you will have to claw it out of my cold dead hands. I. Love. This. Thing. My only complaint is how it changes sources, it's a bit tedious. My productivity, focus and happiness while working has increased so much with this monitor, and gaming is fantastic. I use Linux with a tiling window manager. To be honest when I'm in Windows or OSX then this monitor isn't quite as godly. The automatic tiling really helps squeeze out the full worth of this giant beast. I've had zero issues with it. No matter

Pricey but worth it for me!

When I saw how wide this was I had to have it. Monitor is very crisp and clear. It's probably the best monitor I've ever owned. My previous monitor was Microboard M340CLZ. That was a 34 inch ultrawide running at 3440 x 1440. I thought I would miss the resolution from my Microboard but it hasn't been an issue. I love the resolution with this monitor. It works fine for me. I mostly use the monitor for gaming and entertainment. I'm running the monitor with a 1080ti. Gaming on this thing is something to behold. My game of choice right now is PUBG and it looks freaking amazing on this thing. The price tag is steep but if you have the cash to throw at something like this... do it. People that are on a budget don't buy stuff like this.

Soo good and soo bad at the same time.

Pros:

Looks very good, tons of work space, equivalent to 2 1080P monitors better for gaming cards than higher resolution monitors that require more pixels be pushed. Great for productivity.

Cons:

Terrible customer service. Ordered mine directly from Samsung, noticed failed pixel day 1. 1 chat, 2 emails, and 7 phonecalls (1.5 hrs min each) across 5 days they finally tell me they don't do RMA and I have to return for full refund and reorder. Ok, let's go that route. I'm then told I'll receive an email in 3 days for RMA....OK.. when I get my email, I'm told that the backlog of RMA is so great it'll take up to 2wks to get my RMA number and shipping label. What?!

In this time, my monitor starts refusing to wake up, will not even show the BIOS. You have to turn it down to display port 1.1 even though my card supports 1.4. device seems to prefer miniDP and they sent non locking cables. After connecting a second computer to HDMI, now monitor won't show anything from ANY input. I moved the second computer to a TV, works fine. Only one computer connected, I'm now trying to resolve the issue, I go into the OSD, auto detect inputs is annoying and terrible, I change freesync settings and monitor turns off and won't come on, reseat power, go into OSD do it again, same issue! This monitor makes me hate Samsung, but when it comes to freesync, this is my best option especially as I wait for VEGA.

Their OSD looks great, but it doesn't matter if the monitor runs like crap. Is it worth 1500+tax? NO, HECK NO. Unless you're 100% sure and you're willing to deal with trouble, I say avoid like the plague. If your willing to fight the monitor until it's working and plan to never change the settings, inputs, etc. and you need the screen real estate for super ultra wide gaming with AMD freesync2, pull the trigger.

UPDATE:

I've been working with Samsung Customer support since Sept 18th trying to get this thing replaced/refunded/repaired. It is now Nov 2nd. Still nothing. They've promised me an RMA label 3 times, first time telling me it takes 15 business days, second time, they were "sending a truck for pickup", third time, they didn't know what the other person was thinking and they were sorry, it would be 3-5 business days for RMA label, 4th time got supervisor (Rise ID:126) who admitted samsung RMA dept is having an issue for the past month and is having problems when trying to generate RMA labels and I'm not the only one affected and there is NO ETA of when my RMA label will arrive.

I contacted other teams was escalated to ECR who got me a service ticket for repair. Few days later repair ticket cancelled because they don't work on this kind of monitor. Contact them again, give ECR ticket, they try another facility, same issue, few days later they cancel the ticket. Contact them again, they want me to ship the monitor to the other side of the US for repair. NO, NO MORE. its been over 1.5months of trying to get my $1644.36 . I'm talking with ECR right now. I'm being told again, to wait for an RMA label again. I've emailed officeofpresident@sea.samsung.com (was completely ignored) , I've contacted multiple depts. I've used chat, email, and phone. Doesn't appear to go anywhere. Even after I get the RMA label, I'll still have to wait 2wks for a refund. so it'll be over 2 months that samsung has kept my money.

UPDATE 2:

Ok so in December they sent someone to my house to replace the panel. 3rd party tech from USSI, guy is awesome. Panel replaced, dead pixels will remain. Uh oh. "It's either the driver board or ribbon cables. Either way, they'll just send a replacement". Ok, SGTM. Tech takes pictures for documentation proof. Get a reply shortly after. Tech leaves, they are going to replace the monitor. Great! Wait a week, what's going on? Call Samsung to check, Samsung cancelled the replacement. What why? They want pictures as proof of dead pixels. I tell them their technician took pics on their behalf and they have pictures. Ticket reopened. Wait another week, call back, same issue. Cancelled ticket again, same BS reply, I give them hell. They reopen ticket and apologized. They'll contact the tech. OK... Check again a week later. Closed again. I'm furious, I ask to be escalated. They send me to an ECR mgr. I give the ticket number. She starts reading, before finishing she immediately starts apologizing, she's shocked how bad this has gone and for how long. She finishes reading, apologizes again and tells shell handle it. It's the week before Christmas. Sure enough, I get an email and phone call to expect a delivery first Friday of January and they'll swap out the units. It happens! New monitor has none of the glitchiness, no dead pixels, main DP port works fine including 1.2 and up support! Monitor now wakes up appropriately.

It was a long journey. It's over. I still love the monitor. It was a PITA getting a working one, but all in all I still would have bought this Monitor.

DO NOT BUY FROM SAMSUNG E-COMMERCE! God help you if you have a warranty issue outside return time.

For the price it should be stellar

I opened the box and said OMG out loud. This monitor is truly spectacular to look at. It's just beautiful.

Too bad it dosen't work. Initially I hooked this up to my PC via Display port and I fell in love. So much screen real estate. So easy to multi task. Games that support this resolution looked wonderful!

But I would walk away and the monitor would go to sleep. After that...good luck waking it up. Many times of unplugging and re-plugging the monitor into power and finally it would start working again. Walk away again and the same thing happens. Beyond frustrating that Samsung won't address this issue that MANY people have. Give it a Google!

Shortly after that it would randomly start turning off while I was using it! Press the power button...nothing. Unplug, re-plug...over and over until it would finally kick back on, work for 5-10 minutes and just shut off again. I tried everything. New power cable, display port cable, HDMI cable, I went as far as swapping video cards...it all comes back to the monitor.

At this price point, I expected this thing to be flawless. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time. Wait for Samsung to get it together and address the issues. Maybe the next version will be better....until then...I'll stay very far away from Samsung monitors.

The Only Vesa Rated HDR Monitor & One Of The Most Gorgeous Pictures For Games, Movies & Productivity
by The Badboy (5 out of 5 stars)
January 8, 2018

In a word, incredible. Though, its beauty requires a few tweaks before you get there.
1) The monitor is perfectly calibrated at the factory and shipped with the best settings
2) Buy a high quality DP 1.4 cable, if you plan on getting the best from this monitor and your video card. Its the only way to run its DP 1.2+(the cable that comes with is not DP 1.4) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XSV3B4L/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1&tag=c-t-20
3) Download the latest graphics driver for your videocard to make sure your cards software has control over brightness, contrast and gamma... as Windows likes to take control of them and keep them from changing anything, when you enable HDR.
4) Enable HDR in Windows 10, without doing so, the monitor will not run in HDR(the monitor will say HDR when showing the input and in its menu under info)
5) Adjust brightness, contrast and gamma to your liking under display settings(again... Windows, for some odd reason, halves the monitors brightness when enabling HDR). Also, play with the color enhancement settings, if your videocard supports it(I have a 1080 and it does). It will get those brightness levels back and make it look even better than it did prior to enablng HDR.

Doing what I mentioned above will get you the brightest, most colorful picture youve ever seen. Using the DP 1.4 cable allows for the best that your videocard has to offer at 144hz and 3840x1080, with clear, sharp text, no matter how big or small you like it. I own a recording and video production studio and this monitor allows me to have every function on the screen at once, improving productivity exponentially, eliminating the need to menu surf to find and use what you are looking for. The inclusion of the screen split software helps to divide the screen, any way you want. Videos and games also look incredible on this monitor. It is big, so you will want a rather large desk or to buy a floor stand to sit behind the desk. When set it up correctly, it is very bright. Almost double that of competing products. So you will want to sit a little bit further away than normal. Though it fills your peripheral vision, so you wont ever miss a thing. It also has a backlight, that can help with eye strain, along with a night setting which lowers blue levels and warms the picture to do the same.

If you work in the film, game, finance or music industry... you cannot beat the real estate that this monitor affords you. It helps you work more efficiently and accomplish twice as much in half the time. The ultra wide screen allows all the apps you need opened, to do so side by side with room to spare. Im so enamored by it... Im thinking about buying a second one to do even more.

I cant say enough good things about this monitor. Its the only one of its kind and goes above and beyond my wildest expectations. The HDR brings out more color and brightness than anything else on the market. Everytime I turn it on, Im amazed.

Transformative
by Robert (5 out of 5 stars)

I've now had several days with this monitor. Setup was relatively easy. Most of the time spent was preparing my desk. At first, I have to admit I was more than a little disappointed with the quality of the video. QLED black levels, while marginally better than my previous Samsung 2333 monitors, are not all that impressive, especially once you've seen the true blacks that OLED delivers. Text looked quite poor on Windows 10 - markedly worse than my old monitors - heavily aliased, just yuck. I fiddled forever with clear type and monitor settings combinations, but nothing looked good.

But over the past few days, I swear it's gotten better. I think I may simply be rationalizing because I could find no information regarding "QLED burn-in" times. Maybe I've just adjusted to poorer quality text?

But something else has happened that I did not expect. Despite the less-than-ideal image performance, I've fallen head over heels in love with this amazing piece of technology. Almost overnight, it has transformed the way I work and the way I play.

I've been running a dual 23" 1920x1080 monitor setup for the past 10 years. This screen is simply those 2 screens merged together. But what a difference the merger makes!

I was excited to use the Easy Setting Box software to make the transition to a single screen smoother. But now I realize I have absolutely no need for it whatsoever. With so much operating space, working with multiple windows has become almost a joyous activity. The sense of freedom afforded by a giant contiguous workspace cannot be overstated. As a software developer, I find myself sizing most of my windows to slightly LARGER than 24" - not full screen, just extra wide - where I can keep lots of subpanels and tools comfortably on screen at all times.

Desktop backgrounds look incredible.

Games: I don't really play video games. Scratch that. Now I do. You HAVE to play video games on this beast. Until VR reaches its inevitable critical mass, the CHG90 is here to let you feel the future without donning a faskmask. A surprising number of video games support the near-comedic 3840 x 1080 resolution and they look friggin' incredible. All that real estate adds up to better field of view and massively intensified immersion. I feel like dragging people off the street into my office just so I can show them this thing. I feel almost guilty possessing something so unabashedly "future".

I was worried that my little GTX960 video card wasn't gonna cut it - but it works fine on games like Call of Duty, where, with some lowering of settings, I can still get 60FPS.

The productivity and gaming enhancements afforded by this mystical device are truly transformative. Yes, I wish the pixel density was higher, but I'm simply too impressed with the overall impact to complain. The more time you spend in front of your computer screen, the more highly I recommend this product.

Streamlines work better than I thought.
by dudewad (5 out of 5 stars)

Holy crap. This is the ultimate. It looks 10x better than having a pair of 24 inchers strapped to your desk. It reduces cable clutter by 50%. It looks like a super model had a baby with a spaceship, and then a tesla had a baby with several large panel flatscreens, and then THOSE two babies had a baby, and it was a beautiful baby, and it was a curved baby.

You can run this thing off one cable. It has display port and display port mini, which allows me to run my main desktop machine off of it, and then switch to my laptop with one nicely tucked-away plug, and you get that full 144hz refresh rate out of the box running DP.

It's surprisingly easy to configure compared to any other monitor i've ever used.

Usage:
- I'm a developer, and being able to split four code windows plus a console and additional tool views without an annoying separator between two monitors is a godsend.
- I'm a gamer. I haven't played the full 32:9 aspect res yet, but I've been playing Starcraft 2 and it looks pretty glorious (albeit in standard 16:9 res).

I'm 1000% satisfied. It looks good. It works great. It delivers. Nice job Samsung, I now forgive you for all your shenanigans with the Galaxy line of phones. That doesn't mean you should keep making them, though, don't get excited.

Made it 20 mins before it died
by Fred B. (1 out of 5 stars)
December 5, 2017

Was excited for this as it appeared to be the perfect fit for multi screen work environment to eliminate my double monitor setup and a big upgrade for gaming. Setup was relatively easy after I got over some initial problems installing the drivers. After the driver problem was resolved I began using the monitor for about 20 mins and was in the process of testing it out when I heard a subtle "pop" sound and suddenly the screen went white and began strobing. While I knew it was a major defect, I gave Samsung support a shot. Completely worthless waste of time with Samsung support, awful tech with no knowledge of the product who kept asking me to unplug and plug back in... I'm giving this another shot and waiting for my replacement to show up from Amazon but given the reviews I am very nervous and considering a straight up return as it sounds like several others are having tech problems and Samsung warranty and support is known for being awful if you have a problem. I'll update after I get the second one.
~**** UPDATE ****~

I received the replacement form amazon today an set it up. I've been using it for about 4 hours with no problems so far and the pitcure quality is great. I am going to give it a week or two before I change my review and give a full review of the performance from both a work and gaming perspective. Hoping I was just unlucky with the 1st one and that this one will last, time will tell...

Good monitor for the right situation
by Scott W (4 out of 5 stars)
October 6, 2018

Update:

The resolution of this monitor finally tipped the scale and I returned it. I'd still recommend it if you can deal with the resolution.
---

I've had the CHG90 for several weeks now and put it through several trials. I use it for software development, windows apps and gaming, so it's been interesting to see how it worked in various situations. I'm running a 1080ti, so I've not had any performance issues. I'm coming from dual 32" flat monitors, which I'v enjoyed for several years.

I've run dual or more monitors since you could first put a splitter on your graphics card. This is the first time I've had a monitor so wide that I didn't need two of them and the lack of a bezel is really nice. With dual monitors, you've either got the bezel centered or one of your monitors off to the side so you can face one monitor head on. Depending on your desk, distance and eye sight, the dual or triple monitor setup starts to fail its intended purpose. When you get into larger monitors, the problem can actually get worse instead of better if you don't have the eye sight for it.

The good:
- No problems with Win10 and about every app I threw at it.
- I'm on nvidia and had no issues with running 120 via hdmi.
- Having two windows up side by side works really well.
- Most every game that I tried had no problem running, whether in the native resolution or with bars.
- Color is really nice. Looks very similar to IPS from my non-photographic eyes.
- Price is ok considering what you get and what you'd pay for similar dual monitors and a bezel.

The bad:
- Stand can tilt up, stand can't tilt down. Guess there's more short desks or tall people than the other way around. It is noticeable when the monitor isn't adjusted to the correct angle. If you sit low or at an angle, prepare for an arm.
- Stand itself is rather monstrous. I use an adjustable keyboard tray, so space wasn't an issue. Keep in mind just how much room that stand takes up. Better to prepare for an arm in most situations.
- This monitor was surprisingly heavy compared to a lot on the market. For the size, I don't suppose it's over weight.
- Switching modes/refresh takes a bit for it to contemplate the meaning of life. Generally under 5s, although I was surprised it took so long. Getting in and out of some games that differ from what I've got set in Windows is noticeable. Not a problem per say, just an observation.
- 1080 height. Well, this one is probably my biggest dislike. While most of the time, I don't notice it that much, I do a lot of remote desktop work and 1080 just sucks. Most remote apps are going to add borders and such so you can't really do 1080 in the remote app, so unless the remote app supports scaling, things look like crap or you're left scrolling. While I've worked around most of it more or less, I've also had to hide my taskbar just to regain those now precious pixels.
- While I had good luck in most every game supporting the resolution, the results weren't always what I expected. Many games just stretched the sides to fill it up rather than actually providing me with a wider field of view. I'm guessing most competitive games do this to keep the little ones from crying OP, unfair advantage or whatever puts them to sleep at night. So prepare yourself to not always get what you'd expect. In some games, it was very noticeable this was happening. In some, it was pulled off very well.
- Speaking of games, prepare for long mouse runs or mods to change the game layout. With most every game that I tried that supported the larger width, they completely failed to take the larger width into consideration for the interface. So unless your game has most of everything you click on in the middle of the screen, you'll be scrolling far left and far right a lot. This has been a real downer in some games where I couldn't change the layout and they had menus or whatever on both the left and right side. Not fun.
- The Samsung apps for my use ended up a joke. Graphical glitches and artifacts as well as incompatibility with some apps. The app that allows you to split up your screen was a roll of the dice when it worked and how it worked. If you're in Win10, you're just as well off with native docking.

Overall, I like this monitor. I generally judge a product by looking at whether I would make the same purchase again. In this case, no, I wouldn't. Even though I enjoy the lack of a bezel, I would have been happier with a higher resolution for what I do. Even if I only gamed, the poor design of games that make you move your mouse all over would bring this down. Debatable whether the monitor is ahead of its time or the software developers can't think any further than 3 year old tech.

Although I'm not overly excited with this monitor, I'm keeping it as I don't want the hassle of returning and there's nothing else on the market at the monitor that I'd like to have more. I'm fairly confident that some people will go nuts over this monitor with it's beautiful colors and decent refresh. Just consider how you plan to use it.

Awesome beast
by MotherTucker (5 out of 5 stars)
September 7, 2017

Ordered this in June, got it in September. Wow, it's a killer! Great colors and contrast. When playing a game at full screen, it's so engrossing because it fills your peripheral vision. Actually got me a bit nauseous for a while, but getting used to it now. Running it with a GTX1080. Only thing I would like to improve would be the vertical size, to get it up to 1280 pixels vertically. Awesome beast! Some older games don't support it full screen, but that's to be expected.
