Got a catch-- a 500MB daily cap!
by Simon Karmentian (3 out of 5 stars)
September 1, 2017

$8/day sounds reasonable for unlimited LTE, doesn't it? Two to three times what you would pay locally, but you only pay when you need it and it's always available when you do.

Unfortunately, Skyroam doesn't offer $8/day for unlimited LTE. After you use just 500MB in a single day, you're throttled down to 2G speeds, which are barely better than your dialup modem in 1995. Think 5 kilobytes per second-- essentially unusable even for light browsing on today's web when webpages can be 2-3 MB apiece.

If you live in the US and have a locked phone, buy a cheap $50 unlocked phone off Amazon with the Amazon lockscreen ads like the Blu R1 HD and get a SIM card for it in the airport at your destination. Then either use that phone while you travel or turn on its WiFi hotspot and tether your normal phone to it.

Not good. So I emailed customer service twice
by Keith A. Scheeler (1 out of 5 stars)

This product couldn't be registered. It loaded up to 50% and then stopped and said call customer service. This was right out of the box. Not good. So I emailed customer service twice. Never heard a thing. Then called them and had to leave a voicemail during business hours. The message said they would call me back. I then received a text back saying I should email customer service for faster response.

Three days later....nothing.

Sent it back.

Limited high-speed data and difficult to use interface
by Jacob Wootten (1 out of 5 stars)
January 3, 2018

As others have mentioned, there are several issues with this product. If I had known of them at the time of purchase, I would not have purchased. First, there's a 500MB limit on the high-speed data, which makes the Solis much less appealing than carrying around a much lighter and cheaper phone with a local SIM card. While I did not have intentions of using this to stream hours upon hours of video, I expected to have a much more user-friendly fair use policy. In addition, it is difficult to use, not impossible, but not very intuitive for the end user. It is a novel idea "‹but poorly executed.

Terrible for me on 3 week vacation in Europe
by Jtegen11 (1 out of 5 stars)
August 13, 2018

It was easy to set up initially and I was excited to see that it could run up to 5 devices. I was disappointed when I got to Europe though. The skyroam worked well when just my phone was connected, but when my girlfriend connected to it, we would alternate getting kicked off the WiFi. Then you would try to put the password in and it would say it was wrong. To correct you I had to turn off WiFi, shut the phone off and then turn it back on. After I would connect, it would kick my girlfriend off and she would have to start the same process. Eventually we just had one device connected.

Battery life started out great, but after a couple charges, it would only stay charged for a few hours, thank god I had a battery pack to plug it into.

One of my friends referred me to the skyroam because they absolutely loved it, so I may have just got a faulty device, but from my experience, not worth the money and I will definitely never use their services again.

This day and age of great tech products with straight simple set up this falls ...
by Patrick Murray (1 out of 5 stars)

Set up impossible and no real help within the site to resolve. This day and age of great tech products with straight simple set up this falls way short. The FAQ on the site is just an electronic version of the inadequate set up guide that comes with the device. The site should have more robust answers and directions on how to resolve.

This product is being returned.

I think they should have done a better job actually testing the Skyroam Solis with real world travel
by Anthony C. (2 out of 5 stars)

Well for me the cons outweigh the pros.

Cons:
- Larger than I what is ideal (The hockey-puck design is a little cumbersome at times and hard to fit in a jean pocket)
- Takes a long time to charge (6-8 hours in my experience)
- When using it as a battery for your phone it does not last very long
- The global wifi recharge cost is only slightly cheaper than my Verizon International Roaming plan
- Too many small adapters to lose, if you don't have a phone with USB-C, you have to keep track of your adapters.

Pros:
- You can connect multiple devices and share wifi in almost every country in the world
- Speed wise it is pretty decent for what it is.

I purchased this product for a long trip to Portugal and Spain. After using it every day, mostly for a battery charger rather than the wifi capabilities. For a traveling device, it was very cumbersome to use and wasn't that practical for my needs as it was hard to keep in my pocket while my phone was charging. I ended up just using my Verizon Global roaming which only cost $2 more than what Sky Roam charges per day because it was just more convenient.

I did read all the not so favorable reviews on Amazon but figured I would take a chance. I wish I had bought the original Skyroam instead, or a different global wifi device.

Man with food poisoning takes the 20 minutes it took with the internet skyroam provided to write a p

I've had such a terrible experience with this product that I powered through the roughly 20 some odd minutes that it has taken me to get to this point of writing a review here using the 100kbps download speed that I am getting now.

I am convinced that their service is borderline fraudulent. I was getting 15mbps for about half an hour and then got my download speed reduced to below 250kbps. Everytime that I run a speed test, it initially is at that higher download speed and then jumps back down to the slow download speed. It is almost as if a program runs to check how much data i've downloaded and determines my speed. Reminds me of Volkswagen cheating emissions tests.

Do yourself a favor and go through the trouble to get local sim cards while you are traveling.

Not all it's cracked up to be
by Dozo (3 out of 5 stars)

I bought this for a month-long international trip, and tried to register it, unsuccessfully, for days. To use it, first you connect to the unit wirelessly, then go to a page where you sign up and then can buy day passes (coverage) My heavy orange brick merely sent off a signal that it was 10% Loading..... for several hours each time I tried it. I went on their website to tech support, called (they texted me back one time to say they were busy --- no kidding, if this is the product they sell!), and emailed, to no avail, and decided to try one last thing -- I drove all over town looking for a place with great AT& T and Verizon signals, since I have no way of knowing what this thing uses. Finally, I was able to get it to load and register, but since I bought it for when I am NOT in a big city with a hotel with wifi, but rather on back roads or provinces (this trip, Tasmania) with "good" but not "great" cell service, probably worse than at my house or office, I fear it will be unusable except when I already have wifi without it, like a rich man's bank's loan officer. If it works in Australia and New Zealand, I will revise my assessment, but for now, be aware that the people who "love" their skyroam may be in London or Paris or places with lovely cell towers etc, and purchase according to your travel needs.

Bad company and customer support
by B. McLauchlin (1 out of 5 stars)
March 10, 2019

My brother in law had one of these in Alaska while on a cruise and it seemed like it worked okay. I like the idea of paying $9.00/day to be used when you want. Unfortunately, I have tried several times to use mine and it's eitjer so slow or I can't get on line at all. I initially bought 21 days for a cruise and could never get on line with this device but could get online with my iPad and cell phone. Tech support is very unhelpful and to try and use it again to see if it's working you burn a day ($9.00) so a minute or 24 hours is the same.

They have major issues.
by jeff paglialonga (1 out of 5 stars)

I purchased this for working in Europe. I have been here 12 days now and have had the device working for only 1 day. When in major cities I can not even get it to connect. They have sent refresh signals to the device to no avail. They had me do an upgrade to the Solis device as well. That did not solve the issues as well.

Still waiting to get it working. When it did work I will say it was much faster than my phone data.
