The 2018 selfie stick,
by @The_Nerdy_NP (5 out of 5 stars)
July 22, 2018

My friend who got my whole family hooked on the ultimate symbol of douchery- the Hydroflask, is also responsible for this purchase.

It's a really need thing, the quality is pretty clear when you look through it. The pictures are beautiful but... You will get looks.

Like a tourist using a selfie stick, wearing a fanny pack and adorned in all of the cheap tourist garbage you could imagine- people will stare at you. Some with sadness for your pathetic life, some with genuine interest in to what in the actual H you're doing.

Also, if you live in a sunny place... This is almost a weapon of mass destruction. I live on the surface of the sun (Phoenix, Arizona). I walked outside to test this puppy out, walked about 4 steps (not even kidding) when my hand holding the ball got HOT AF.

Obviously it says on the packaging to watch out for this, but considering there are warnings to not dry your hair in the bath tub on hairdryers, Darwinism is dead. So. Keep this sucker OUT of the sun, treat it like a little baby vampire until you get to where you are going to take your photo, then just be aware of what is underneath it.

know the limitations. enjoy

Limitations of physics....

Yes, the K9 lensball is heavy with the 80mm version weighing a hefty 650g. That's not a complaint. It's a simple fact of physics.

Yes, lenses bend light, and in the case of a sphere vs the sun, that light can be focused to a point. The focal point for this lens is about 1cm outside the lens in the position opposite the light source. In the Florida summer sun, your hand will start to appreciate the heat in less than 3 seconds of exposure. You can use it in the sun provided you avoid placing fingers or what not at the point of the globe opposite the sun. Don't leave it unattended in the sunlight.

Depth of range is greatly influence by your distance from the ball. The further away you are, the greater the depth of range. When you're close to the lensball, depth of range will minimize until only the center of the image will appear in focus. But at the same time, this changes how much of the image is occupied by the lensball. One can also adjust their F-stop to address the depth of range. I find that the best of both worlds is achievable when I shoot with the lensball occupying about 10% of the image field and then crop the picture to taste.

Limitations of use....

If you haven't noticed, most of the pictures are taken whilst somebody is holding the lensball in their hand. Like you need another picture of your left hand? Consider finding alternative perches. Be creative.

Also, the repeated handling covers the lens in fingerprints. Pack the lens in an oversized soft cloth and wipe it down for prints before each use. Use the same cloth to conceal it while out in the sun.

When shooting landscapes, the real horizon looks best if it aligns with the horizon within the lens. This means you're shooting at horizontally into the lens for every landscape shot. Likewise, if you want to shoot up into a tree or building, one should consider an approach steep enough to avoid seeing the horizon in the lens.

You can also magnify small object. Ants look like giants when about 1cm opposite from the shooting position. Objects closer than this can create a kaleidoscope effect which can look cool but may be difficult for the camera to focus upon.

Mostly I find use for the lensball when I'm faced with a mediocre subject and want to add some panache to it. Or if my primary camera is tied up on a long-exposure shot, I'll breakout a secondary camera and a lensball to pass the time.

Considering its weight and limitations of use, it only accompanies me on photo shoots where the burden of photographic equipment is shared by multiple persons.

I personally suspect that the use of lensballs (and similar products) will be a transient fad. Likewise, I predict that upcoming generations of phone-based photo software allow somebody to create this effect within a normal picture.

The images shown were taken using an iPhone and have not been edited or altered.

high quality, but seriously dangerous. NOT FOR KIDS!
by WS (5 out of 5 stars)

Very high quality. Very fun to play with the inverted images.

Also very dangerous. Heed the manufacturer's warnings!! The first time I took it out to play with it, I burned my hand 3 times by not paying attention to where the sun was when I was holding the ball, and once I set it down on a hedge, snapped 2 shots , and in that time, the leaves were visibly smoking. Snatched it up hastily before it actually flamed.

Can be dangerous

HANDLE RESPONSIBILY Although it creates beautiful pictures, but CAUTION it's really a magnifying glass. If you hold it in direct sunlight too long it'll burn your hand, or if you set in on something flammable it'll burn it. (Burnt a hole in a $350 jacket). Keep it in the pouch when not in use. If you set in in some grass or wood, it'll catch it on fire. Don't be responsible for a forest fire, and don't burn your car. Keep it pouched.

Fantastic.

I. Love. This. Thing. It is absolutely the coolest thing I've ever bought on Amazon. I saw it on Instagram and looked it up on amazon (as I always do) and the reviews were great so I thought I'd give it a shot. I am no photographer and only use my iPhone for pictures but it makes even the most mundane things appear interesting. I highly recommend. I will buy these as gifts.

PS do not buy the protection plan. Asurion does not stand behind it and will not cover it. I have had to get a refund. Amazon was supposed to be removing the option but I see it is still there.

I Bought Both Sizes!
by Heather HS (5 out of 5 stars)

Love it so much, I bought the other size! It's so much fun, and brings a new dimension to your photos. I'm just an amateur photographer, taking photos with my iPhone. It's fun to play around with and find different things to place it on, other than my hand.
