Ok, this is a hard review for me to write, but an important one in the sense that I hope it will improve the product. I took a risk buying it, because all the reviews were 5 star unverified purchases. I'm a real purchase, and I paid full price. Ok then. So the product arrived quickly and I was super happy that it was a lightweight box. It took just a few minutes to assemble. It's shockingly uncomplicated with essentially just one mechanical part, which is the winding mechanism which moves the dirty paper along the roll. So far, so good. My dog is a super smart, fastidious shiba inu, so took to it immediately. Also, good. Up to this point it is a 6 star rating! I love the design, the ease of setup, and the price was in range. BUT, I have the same complaint that others have. The paper is just not absorbent. I understand that there may be issues with creating bulk but they need to do something about the lack of moisture absorbance. My dog is a 15 pound, petite female shiba. She urinates in the center of the pad, but the urine inevitably runs off the side, and also on to her paws, which she hates. With the quilted wee wee pads, it sucks in the liquid before it can migrate. Maybe a different style plastic backing or quilting is in order, or just a thicker pad. Alternatively an edge guard to keep moisture on the platform could work. I think this can be resolved! For now, I put a wee wee on the side which catches the moisture. This defeats the purpose a bit, but it is still functional for gathering waste #2. If a new style pad comes out to manage this situation, I will revise my review to a 5 star, as the potential is 100% there. I appreciate the hard work the developer has put into the product and hope he keeps working to improve it.

JULY 2018 UPDATE

Brillant pad wrote me to let me know that the pads are improved, and yes, I have noticed, they are! No more spill over, so we are moving in the right direction. The machine is not perfect. There are sometimes automated rolling snafus where the light goes red, but I just reset, and it's fine. This is rare, and not bothersome to me, given the benifits of the machine.

I want to add that this has been a bit lifechanging. I have an elderly dog, and have had to move several times in the past year, which has been beyond stressful for all. The consistency of having Brilliant Pad in the home allowed me to deal with being away from the house for longer periods to deal with moving logistics, and having my shiba go to the pad freely, as needed. She never has to hold her urine and goes many times a day, improving her quality of life. I am fully convinced she will live a longer, healthier life being able to go on demand. I now walk her for fun, when she is up for it. No more rainy walks, walks in 100 degrees, or walking through painful salt ice on the sidewalks.

One thing that I have found super helpful is to put plants all around the unit, to make it "outdoorsey." This also helps the dog hit the target and not go off the side, providing a "boundary" of sorts. You can just get potted plants at your local grocery store, which work just fine. Just make sure they are pet-safe. Putting potted grasses around is also helpful. A decorative tall grass varietal seems to work best. This also helps with odor, and hides the pad. Just make sure there is enough room for pup to enter/exit without knocking them over.

My Maltese puppies and dogs LOVE the BrilliantPad Self-Cleaning potty

I purchased one of these for my dogs and puppies. The puppies LOVED it and started out playing on it and taking all of their toys and blankets up on the BrilliantPad Self-Cleaning potty! It took them a little time to learn how to use it properly (and no longer put their toys and blankets on it). The puppies learned fastest, and the adult dogs started using it too after watching the puppies! Monkey see, Monkey do.... I was amazed that it was the puppies that led the way for the older dogs. It has worked great for me and my dogs.

In reading some of the other reviews of owners of BrilliantPad, I came across one where the dog had been electrocuted, which was very sad. When I am out, I remove the electric cord. The pad won't move while I am gone, but at least my dogs will be safe. When I am home, I put the used tubes from the BrilliantPad (after the roll has been used up) on the cord and tape over the end of cord attached to the BrilliantPad to protect my dogs from electrocution. Some dogs will be more destructive than others, so you really need to know your dogs and what they might do when no one is watching! My dogs are all Maltese dogs, so they are small.

My initial review was posted in May, 2018. For months after that I did not hear from anyone at Brillant Pad. One day a surprise call came from the company owner who apologized that my comments and concerns had gone unnoticed. He vowed to personally work with me until I was happy with my purchase. We have been in contact numerous times since, both by phone and email. The second generation, thicker pads are on the way and I'm sure I will see a difference. I am very impressed by the amount of interest Adam has shown. Now THIS is customer service!

It's probably just "okay/good" if you are using for potty training...if you have an indoor or potty trained dog, this will change your life. No more swapping pads 3+ times a day for my 2 dachshunds. No more smell of old pads in the trash or sitting, no more upset pups or angry pups refusing the dirty pad. A+

My dog loves this and so do I! He figured it out the first day, but then he's special ;) We had a piece of fake grass at first but that was awful. Stinky and leaky but this is wonderful. We had it set to automatically wind up but switched to manual. We live in a one bedroom condo and his potty is on the balcony. If the door is open he goes on his own. If the door is closed he tells us he needs to go out. One suggestion, maybe a plastic sleeve for each roll for disposal. I have a long walk to the garbage chute. Now I use a trash bag.

Rolls last us 2 weeks with a 6 pound dog.

Um, I'm in love with this. Please keep making the potty pad replacement rolls, because my dog is only 3 years old. She is going to need alot of replacements in the future! I love not having to pick up nasty potty pads everyday and being able to quickly put unsightly pee out of public view. Love! My dog and all her doggy friends have taken quite quickly to this machine, I was surprised!

I've tried many different types of indoor potty training systems. Like I said, I tried many because I could never find one that worked the way I wanted it to. They were messy and stinky and didn't always work. But, the BrilliantPad has definitely lived up to its name! My dog has been using it for several months now and I couldn't be happier! My dog used pee pads prior to using this unit and it was easy for her to transition over to it, it just took a little training. Now, I don't have to worry if I'm running late and not able to make it home to let her out. She can do her business and have the BrilliantPad automatically roll a new pad out when she's done. This is also a life-saver in the middle of the night. No more searching for a flashlight and taking her out in the cold, dark night. I am also able to leave the BrilliantPad alone for weeks at a time until the roll is used up. Then, I just pick it up (it is self-contained so there's no mess to touch) throw it away and put in a new roll. I don't know how they did it, but it never, ever smells! Thank you BrilliantPad for making my life easier!!!

Pads are expensive and barely last two weeks rotating 3 times a day. Don't absorb the urine as well so dog's paws are always wet. Hard to change the pads, poop falls out, and you'll need a rubber band around it to keep it closed when trying to dispose of it. Also very odorous when it claimed not to be. Otherwise plugged in it did it's job so complaint is of the pads mainly.

Works Fine, but Rolls are Expensive if you use a lot

Had high hopes for this, but had problems. When I put it on the setting to auto-roll 3x per day, when I come home from work and check it, the machine has not rolled, and there is red light on it and it does nothing. Have to Un plug it to reset it and then do a manual roll. Other problem, when I push the button to manually roll, it rolls for a long time, will it stop? Not sure, it just keeps rolling! Now I am scared it will waste a lot of pad,, or the thing will just keep going! Now i have to un plug it again to make it stop. I am so disappointed. Total waste of money. Plus the rolls are too expensive. I am going to go back to regular pee pads. Also hope i can return it for a refund. it was really expensive for something that does not work.
12/14/17 Update to this review. I contacted Brilliant Pad and they were very nice and sent me a replacement motor. Now the brilliant pad machine works fine. Their customer service is excllent. So, if you have a problem, contact them and they will fix it. I just wish the pad roll was larger, or maybe cheaper because i have two Maltese and go through a roll in 1-2 weeks , so the cost is an issue. I will probably use it for when I have to have a dog sitter so they won't have to deal with the pee pads. That will be nice. But for day to day use, its too expensive. I will go back to regular pee pads.
