Little guidance for setup, fun to use, frustrating to take down.
by Evelyn Leathe Straigt (3 out of 5 stars)
November 22, 2018

The Amicus Prime, after being set up on a table, is fun to use.

The carry bag it comes with is of good quality.

I did not have any significant problems with the app accompanying the robot.

Minus two stars however for instructions accompanying the the device (especially around take down and setup.)

And the lack of design thought given to the take down process.

As it stands now, the Amicus is not just frustrating to disassemble but dangerous under certain circumstances.

A table tennis robot is something that a player will want to setup and take down frequently.

Set up to practice when you are alone and take down otherwise to save space or play with other players.

This use case seems to be the primary one, even in the marketing materials I've seen, so why was it paid so little thought?

An example - There is a turn knob that is used to lock the robot into place.

If you want to lift or lower the robot, you need to unlock it using this knob.

The robot can get stuck when you are lifting or lowering it and require you to pull harder on it to get it to move up.

When it finally frees itself, it accelerates rapidly and, in my case, has already hit someone in the face and cut them.

Since there is already a turn knob, why not just have a turn knob that moves the robot up and down for you?

The instructions for taking down the Amicus are not helpful.

It is as if the writer watched someone take it down once and were not allowed to ask any questions.

Then they spent ten minutes writing a brief overview of what they saw.

At one point, the take down instructions say - "Fold up the Net until the first stop of the folding mechanism."

Getting the net collapsed again is the most complex part of taking the Amicus down and this is all of the guidance you are left with.

The setup instructions, while also not perfect, at least had some kind of corresponding pictures to help through the process.

The one picture included in the take down directions is of a the Amicus in the carry bag.

The ball collection tray is not constructed in such a way to ensure that the balls are always loaded back into the robot.

I've had ~10 balls hanging out around the edges of the net, refusing the fall over the rim and into the loading mechanism.
