Product Description

Serve. Protect. The Provoke knife draws on ancient karambit design but it’s hiding a futuristic secret. The first knife ever to feature Kinematic technology, it stays neatly tucked away in transit and comes to life when there’s trouble afoot.

Around here, we think of Designer Joe Caswell as somewhat of a mad scientist. When we got an eyeful of the sketches that were to become the Provoke—designed in Newbury Park, California—we knew he was destined to become one of the most innovative designers the knife world has ever seen. Modeled after a traditional karambit, the black oxide-finished hawkbill-style blade is forged of a premium D2 steel for high durability and excellent edge retention.

The opening mechanism is pulling the folder into the future whether it’s ready or not. Thumb pressure on the upper crossbar sets the chain reaction in motion, causing the blade to lunge to action while you’ve got a firm grasp on the handle. It’s crafted of aircraft-grade 6061 aluminum for supreme toughness. In true Joe fashion, the pocket clip is also a world’s first—sitting almost completely flush with the handle and likewise activated with light thumb pressure.

The Provoke comes up strong when it’s called in for duty.

How Kinematic Works
Nudge the upper crossbar with your thumb—while the rest of your fingers firmly grasp the handle—and the blade lunges to life and locks into place. Shift the discrete lever at the base of the finger loop and the blade retreats into its closed position.

Good knife for close fight but too Overpriced
by William T. James, Jr. (3 out of 5 stars)

Pocket clip is very difficult to use. Works minimally with jeans. Does not work well with tactical pants or pants with with a double patch to minimize wear caused by a knife clip. Result is an occasional premature activation of the opening mechanism as you draw it from a pocket. Well designed and very innovative knife, but the cost is extremely high.

It's really amazing

I don't have a bad thing to say about this, save a few caveats. The first is that this is a fighting knife and not a utility blade. The weight and curved blade in that sense is a plus and not a detriment.

The second: it's an amazing blade, but I don't think it's really worth $200.00 for a production knife. $150, yes: but the $200.00 price tag is steep, even with such a high quality item. D2 steel isn't that outstanding.

However, I DID pay that, love my purchase, and so very excited to have that as part of my system. It's biggest asset is being able to use it as a brass knuckle / Kubotan as a less lethal option, but to be able to instantly deploy it as a knife if escalation is necessary. No other blade offers that versatility and for that one reason, it's a must-have for a fighting knife.

My thanks to designer Joe Caswell and the team at CRKT for bringing this to the table. I can't wait to see what they come up with in the future!

Funky, solid little knife with only one gotcha.
by Dave Newton (4 out of 5 stars)

Pros: Very unique. Very solid when open (almost a fixed blade). Very fun to *sniiikkk*, better than a fidget spinner. Can open with thumb or a flick.

Cons: Tad pricey (I'm okay with that). So far I haven't experienced the screw problems (and if I do, who doesn't have Loc-Tite?!). Tricky to fold back up one-handed (doable with practice, but I haven't gotten past the awkward stage yet). The pocket clip isn't great for thick pocket lips (or whatever they're called).

The only real flaw: because of the opening mechanism's location you may not be able to trivially carry it on the left side.

Wicked cool knive. Very unique

Not sure how practical it is, as it is heavy and bulky. It is a very solid well build knife, and what an amazing design. This is my second Karambit knife. The other is a Spyderco, with I love.

It is a very fast deployment, one you get used to it. but unlocking the blade is a two handed operation.

The locking mechanism seems extremely solid, with no play, but it is a bit awkward and takes some getting used to. Just like the rest of the knife. It too is very unique.

Since it is so bulky, the, again, very unique pants clip isn't real practical. I know that CKRT came out with a case for it, but a friend purchased one and was extremely unhappy with it and sent it back.

But all things being equal, I love the knife and it's a great addition to my collection.

CAUTION: The tip of the blade is always exposed and I once pricked myself on the tip (but ONLY ONCE). It was quite the surprise. Never had a knife with the tip exposed like that. Just be aware.

Returned it the next day...

I've been EDC'ing a pocket knife for over 30 years now. I'm a middle school teacher and an avid DIY'er... I understand the importance of having quality tools and also living within a budget. This knife has intrigued me since I'd seen the prototype videos. When CRKT, one of brands I regularly carry announced it, I was ecstatic.

I ordered it from the company direct and paid for rush shipping. When it arrived, I immediately began to play with it and get a feel for the mechanism. Initially, everything worked great... but within a few dozen repetitions of deploying and closing it, the locking tab began to catch in the closed position- locking the blade closed! No more rapid deployment. If you've never held the Provoke in your hands, let me explain- the locking tab is easily accessible when the blade is deployed... however, it is almost unreachable when closed and on my sample, I had to use a small plastic shim to actuate it and open the blade.. This was very disappointing to me.

I HOPE it was simply a bad example that slipped through QC or the case of a poorly tempered spring... but I do know that I was neither abusive or excessive with my manipulations in familiarizing myself with it.

Unique Karambit

This karambit is just as cool as it looks. Solid build, quality materials. A little heavy for a pocket folder but definitely manageable

Screws back out
by Pat (2 out of 5 stars)

Belt clip is hard to use and only fits on thin pants. Great design and solid feel of the knife though....until the screws start backing out. Happened on all 3 of mine after only a week or so.

Fun design. Screws and pocket clip could use some work.

This is a fun knife to open and close, so I have done it frequently. The fit and finish was good when I received it, but the screws have needed tightening multiple times in the short time I have had it. If you don't tighten them in time, the screw heads can hit and mar the frame (as I found out.) I also had a issue with the knife getting stuck in the open position. I eventually managed to get it unstuck with a screw driver. The cause was one of the linkages that could not pivot freely at one of the screws on the handle end. I oiled it and forced it back and forth until it got smooth, and it has not has this problem again.

My 2nd complaint is the pocket clip. It is nice design and lets the knife sit low, but it bites in to the fabric too much and makes the knife hard to remove from the pocket. I have only used it with jeans, it might work better with other thinner materials.

I really like the design and action of this knife, but for the price I was expecting it to have less issues. I am planning on keeping and using it. I might have to try some Loctite on the screws.

Much better options out there.

Slow to open ,even slower to close. Takes two hands and tool to close, lever closing spring too stiff. A knife that has thumb start and then flips to open is more than three times as fast , and then can be closed one handed.

Worth the money? Probably not, but would I spend it on this knife again? Absolutely!!!!!!
by Wonder Woman (5 out of 5 stars)

While this is way more than I would normally spend on a knife of any kind, I had purchased the knock off version of this knife and just had to find out what the difference was...well, night and day! The CRKT is a very well built tight fitting substantial knife. The knock off is puny compared to the real deal. The lock action is absolute with a solid snap into position with zero play on any part. Very easy to open one handed with your thumb, but closing takes a little practice as the lock is stiff.

Cool factor is off the charts. Opening with a forward snap has a solid snap when it locks in then a quick back twirl into the palm of your hand.....still smile each time I do it...
