His life is in desperate need of a jump start—and then a surprise arrives at his door in the form of his audacious teenage niece, Gemma. Reckless and stubborn, she invites herself into Benedict’s world and turns his orderly life upside down. But she might just be exactly what he needs to get his life back on track.

Filled with colorful characters and irresistible charm,
Rise and Shine, Benedict Stone is a luminous reminder of the unbreakable bonds of family, and shows that having someone to embrace life with is always better than standing on your own.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Novels about love and second chances abound right now, but Patrick's follow-up to her debut, The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper, rises to the top with its clever plot, utterly charming characters, and warmly believable conclusion. A perfect read for lovers of Antoine Laurain's The Red Notebook, Gabrielle Zevin's The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry, and Fredrik Backman's A Man Called Ove." -Library Journal, starred review

"In her delightful second novel, Patrick once again imbues objects with magic... More importantly, a long-held secret is divulged, a feud ended, and the varied meanings of family explored." -Publishers Weekly

"Patrick follows her hit debut, The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper, with a second novel that evokes a similarly delightful sentimental and cozy feeling... Readers will be charmed by Patrick's quirky characters and sweet premise." -Booklist

"Heartwarming." -Kirkus Reviews

Hello and welcome to my author page! If you click the yellow 'Follow' button, Amazon will send you an email when I have a new release, or if there's a special deal you might be interested in.

I’ve always wanted to write books but came to it the long way around. I originally studied art and marketing and then worked as a stained glass artist, film festival organiser and communications manager. I won several awards for my short stories and have now written six novels, four of which became USA Today bestsellers. I live with my family in Saddleworth, UK, where I write full time.

My debut novel, The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper, was translated into twenty five languages worldwide and was optioned by a major Hollywood film studio.

My second novel, Rise and Shine, Benedict Stone (named Wishes Under the Willow Tree in the UK), was made into a Hallmark movie in 2021.

My third novel, inspired by my love of stories, is The Library of Lost and Found. It was selected as ’The Great North West Read,’ to be read across 300 libraries in the UK in 2019.

My fourth is titled The Secrets of Love Story Bridge (The Secrets of Sunshine in the UK) and my fifth, The Messy Lives of Book People (titled The Book Share in the UK) was the Barnes & Noble fiction pick for June 2022 in the USA.

I hope you enjoy my sixth novel, The Little Italian Hotel, a warm, uplifting escape about the power of love, friendship and following your dreams.

I’ve bought this book for myself, and I know it will be a great read. I have read this authors books before and I just know I won’t be disappointed. I’d recommend her books to anyone.

I read this book after I finished reading The Curious charms of Arthur Pepper, which I loved. I really enjoyed Rise and Shine, Benedict Stone but I did not fall in love with Benedict as I did with Arthur. Even so, I loved the story and the way the author used the stones to bring the story together. I will definitely read more books by Phaedra Patrick.

This book is not my favorite by this author. The premise is that Benedict and his wife have struggled with fertility treatments and the struggle has strained their marriage. When the book opens, Benedict and his wife have separated. Benedict was a hard character for me to like even though the author places him in a sympathetic position. Except with regard to sweets, he leads a passive, highly restrained life in a small village in England. Things begin to change with the unexpected arrival of his American niece that he has never met. Even with plot complications that are well established to cause stress and conflict, the book just never rang true. Much of it is predictable and trite. It left me cold and a bit disappointed. It would not be a selection for my book group. The comparisons by some reviewers of this book to Fredrick Backman’s A Man Called Ove are off-base in my mind. This book is not in the same class.

A lovely story about family and forgiveness. Well defined small town feeling, good characterizations. No surprises, but a book to enjoy.

An estranged couple on the eve of their 10th wedding anniversary living in a small English village, where everyone knows everyone’s business. Benedict is a jeweler, churning out adequate (blah) jewelry while going through life without really living it. Until in the middle of the night he wakes up to a pounding on his door! Gemma, his teenage niece, whom he’s never met is there with a wild story about coming to visit from America. And visit she does, awakening not only Benedict out of his funk but seems to jump start the townspeople too. If you are looking for adventure, mystery and excitement - skip over this one… but if you are in for meeting some interesting characters and rediscovering the true meaning of what it means to be a family - then this book is for youl

This book truly touched my soul. For anyone who has struggled with infertility it is such a secret, solitary and sorrowful battle. This story comes from a man’s perspective which helps to understand how the journey can be painful for both partners and helped me understand how difficult it can be for the partner as well. Thank you for this beautiful book as it’s inspired me to find joy and meaning in the struggles that we all face trying to recreate or resuscitate the families of our past and the impacts on the families of or future.

Not as good as “The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper.” It just seemed the main character whined way too much.

I absolutely loved and could relate to the main characters. Gemma was the family jewel (gem) in this story.

I like this author's writing style plus character development and will be reading more of her works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner for Phaedra Patrick
Reviewed in Canada on November 9, 2022
This is a story about love and second chances (and a great tutorial on gemstones and their meanings) that Patrick has populated with great characters and a storyline that flows smoothly for almost its entirety. Okay, there are a few babbles in the brook and a rocky stretch or two, but these hiccoughs (if you will) are easily navigated/overcome to arrive at the end content with having enjoyed a pleasant story. The characters, all, are well defined, developed, and in the majority quite likeable. (I did wonder at times if Benedict could or would survive his self-deprecating persona, but giving nothing away, he does).
Patrick made her mark with “The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper,” and ‘Rise and Shine” solidifies her writing credentials.
I enjoyed and recommend this book
