Twenty five years ago the Microplane Zester Grater was born. This slim line 40001 rasp style zester grater was born in the woodshop and brought to the kitchen. After making an orange cake, a key customer asked us if we could repackae our wood rasp into a zester grater because it made the perfect zest. Since then the Microplane grater zesters have taken the category by storm. This original classic zester doesn't have a handle, but it is the most used zester for chefs. The stainless blade is made in the USA. The original classic zester is 100% stainless, dishwasher safe.

A true American original, this zester is what made Microplane a must have amongst professional chefs and cooking enthusiasts. The iconic long and narrow, rasp-style design originated in the woodshop. This zester/grater is perfect for zesting lemon, limes and other citrus as well as grating parmesan and other hard cheeses. Other uses include grating whole spices, ginger, and garlic.

For uniform lemon rind shreds, this is the perfect grater. Its design is based on that of a rasp, the small and efficient woodworking tool. The cutters are especially sharp, which guarantees easy grating. But this also means you'll need to exercise extra caution--no one likes grated knuckles. The totally flat grating surface makes it easy to move the fruit across the blades, while the rounded edges allow you to set this across the top of a bowl and grate directly into it. I purchased the same thing about 30 years ago when the plane made the transition from carpentry to kitchen - it cost me $30 in those days and after so many years of use and abuse it finally was time to replace it - this one is exactly the same thing as the one of 30 years ago, just at 1/3 of price - what a bargain!
There are many shapes and sizes but this is the original, perfect for hard cheese, nuts, garlic, onion and so many others ... easy to wash, no cuts from the sides and no aromas left behind - Microplane is still THE grater to buy and from them all, this simple one is the most multi purpose and best value out there ... enjoy
Update July 18-2018: I noticed that few from the reviews have been disappointed from a lack of a handle. This design is best if the grater is placed flat on top of a bowl, plate, etc.; This way you have best position for grating (the most force without pushing hard) and the safest for your fingers. I do have a few with handles but those need to be either hand held or leaning on something (the cutting board, plate, etc.) which means I grate with my arm at an angle, my arm gets tired, I need to push more that I should which means that I could get nipped by the grates - so I love the simple and safe design

I had this type years ago and stupidly I thought a fancier one would work just as well. Not so especially when you need to zest citrus fruit. I have the same model and I bought this one for my son. I looked at the models (it had to be a Microplane) with handles but decided to stick with this one because of the streamlined profile. When zesting citrus I often cringe that I can't get all the zested rind out of the Microplane, but I feel like this superthin model gives me the best option. Fancier models seem like there's a lot more thickness of the plane in which to lose zest. The handle would be nice but I've never really had a problem holding this model. And it fits very unobtrusively in a drawer. It is thin and flexible; I always am mindful of the flex when I'm grating something heavy, but I've never actually bent it.
