About this item

  • HATCH & GROW PREHISTORIC CREATURES: Triops are small swimming crustaceans. They have three eyes, a round shovel-shaped exoskeleton, and a shrimp-like tail. Because they look prehistoric and in fact are identical to their long-fossilized ancestors, they are sometimes called "dinosaur shrimp."
  • GRATIFYING PETS FOR KIDS: What makes Triops gratifying as pets is that they hatch in 18-48 hours and quickly grow to their adult size of 1-1.5 inches, and have a lifespan of 20-90 days. Plus, they are easy to take care of, animated, and large enough to watch!
  • Country of Origin : China
  • USE THE RIGHT WATER: When getting started with your Triops if you are using bottled water only use water labeled as natural spring water. If you are using tap water or any other bottled water boil and let the water sit and completely cool before adding the eggs. This will help remove chlorine and any other impurities. Unsuccessful triops hatch attempts are almost always a result of the water that is use. To be safe stick with bottled water that specifically says, “natural spring water”.

Hatched easily!
4 Stars
Hatched easily!
I was worried, after reading reviews on different kits that people only had A few hatch out of 70 eggs. I did not follow the instructions. Instead, I got on a bunch of websites and did research. I had almost all of mine hatch. Here is what I did. I used beta water ( not Spring) I used a heat lamp and made sure the water stayed over 74 degrees. The reason for the four stars is that the little flimsy plastic container won't hold much for long and I don't feel comfortable putting a heat lamp near it all night. I used another container. I need. My picture you can see the little vortex of triops swimming after 2 days.

Followed the instructions for hatching and actually had at least 10 hatch! Unfortunately they all hatched at different times over several days and the larger ones started eating the smaller ones. These guys are a bit tougher than I thought- I accidentally poured one in the toilet while changing the water, fished him out with a cup and put him back in the tank with no problems. They're still going strong after over a month and a half, although we did lose one to cannibalism when no one fed them. Only complaint I have is the algae that ended up growing that I could not get rid of. Had to buy more aquarium sand and still having algae trouble, but I guess any pet requires maintenance. Super cool little creatures to watch!

I apologize as this may be quite extensive for a review. After 24 hours of waiting, there are several baby triops swimming about. I was apprehensive about purchasing these little creatures from reading the reviews but am happy that I decided to give them a try.
For those that followed the directions to a "tee", that may have caused some of the issues. I have taken time to do my own research and will share what I did differently. Perhaps, the following will assist others in this venture.

Hatching: On the directions it states to not use anything except spring water. I have used vapor distilled water. This is advice from different users that have successfully raised triops.
I also have used a larger environment. Switching tanks does not only take time and extra care but can be stressful for human and triops alike.I placed a bit over a liter of water and let the water to sit overnight under a desk lamp to be sure that the temperature was at appropriate levels. I also placed the thermometer strip inside the "tank" being used away from the direct light to be sure of accuracy. Placing the strip on the outside will give an inaccurate
reading. There are darker places away from the light that they can use as a rest area but seem quite content with the light. I always have the house at 75 degrees so I really don't need a water heater since the water temperature reads at 74.

Food: I do not want to overdo the food but have seen several people that have supplemented the diet with carrot peices from day one. I have supplied a couple of beta food pebbles and they're gone so I guess the little ones liked them. It also kept the water clear so that's a plus. Carrots can discolor the water and get mushy. They will pretty much eat anything but don't give them too much.

Breeding: I'm not sure if this part will work but the rest of the information is going well so this may, too. I am going to add more sand to their home so they can dig around and bury the eggs.

So, after 48 hours they are still doing well and just thought this information may be helpful.

The eggs simply didn't hatch. I used distilled water with the proper amount of light and heat, and nothing hatched. I've since used two different types of Triops kits and have had successful hatches, but nothing from this Triassic Triops kits. I even let the eggs dry out for a month and tried again (I've had success with this in the past), but still 0 hatches. This leads me to believe that these eggs were just completely nonviable.

A secondary issue is that the instruction manual that comes with the kit isn't even for the right kit. The instructions indicate that there should be a small container with eggs only in the kit, but the kit actually contains a bag with a mixture of sand and eggs. There are plenty of eggs visible in the mixture, but none of them are viable.

The package came within two days to my location with prime. The kit includes everything needed to start and maintain many troops generations! THe only downside was that the large tank was very dented so we will have o order another. The customer service is very good and responsive! I set the eggs in the dish with distilled water and put a 15 dollar hermit crab heating mat under it. The troops hatched in less than 48 hours! Overall, very great kit from a renown company. I recommend this to dinosaur and pet lovers! Great buy for the price! Hope this helps.
