The manufacturer now recommends using the Viair with the car's engine running. I don't, but you should decide that for yourself. This compressor pumps up very quietly and quickly, doesn't bog down, and doesn't come close to draining your battery. Personally, I'd rather not waste gasoline by idling my car while pumping, and avoid additional pollution, among other things. There are also a number of good reasons why you shouldn't run your car at idle unnecessarily.* This compressor works great even when your car's engine isn't running and that's good enough for me. Even if it does run at a slightly slower speed it is insignificant in the amount of time it takes to pump up and I'll take that trade off over unnecessary engine wear. With a Roadpro adapter I even run it off the cheap utility battery in the back of my Gator to pump up my off road tires, and it makes quick work of it. However, just to be safe, if you're pumping up a flat during a blizzard or bitter cold, or if you think your battery might be weak (struggles to turn over your starter), you might not want to shut off an already warmed up engine. If you have a car battery charger in your garage you can use that for a power source with the Roadpro adapter. I attached it to my 45 year old car battery charger and it worked fine. However, don't try that with your portable drill's trickle battery charger. It just doesn't supply enough power.
Roadpro 12V Battery Clip-On and Cigarette Lighter Adapter
* Besides not being good for your engine to run at idle unnecessarily (Google it), it is a bad idea to run your car's engine in the garage, even with the door open. The wind could blow fumes inside. You could back the car outside, but then you'd have to take it for a drive to warm it up because it's also bad to run an engine without bringing it up to operating temperature before shutting it off.

I have just been reading the one star reviews and am seeing a common theme. Not pumping up past 30 psi and then blowing a fuse even when 15 or 20 amp fuse used and with engine running. I pump up my car's tires to 31 psi and often get to 34 psi before I realize it. I have never blown a fuse myself. Reviews here are heavily weighted on the 5 star level, so it seems to me there is a problem with quality control; some people must be getting defective units. There are at present 250 total reviews. Of those, 222 are 4-5 stars and 19 are 1-2 stars. That means that if you just count people who went to the trouble to review it, 89% got good units and 8% got bad units. (I didn't include the 3's.) One thing that bothers me about the one star reviews is that two reviewers returned theirs and the replacement was bad too. The odds are really against one person getting two bad ones in a row so I don't know what is going on there. According to their reviews it sounds like they are using them correctly. I also saw a couple of them where the plug that goes into the power port broke. It seems like that would be hard to do, but I guess it is possible. These bad experiences make it an even better idea to use it with the Roadpro adapter and attach directly to the battery.
With my first unit, bought over two years, ago there was no instruction in the manual to have the engine running while operating, but now there is. It seems the reason for it is all the blown fuse complaints. It is said to draw more amps when the voltage is lower. That's another good reason to use it with the adapter, and maybe a good reason for the manufacturer to change it from a plug to battery clips like they do on the 90p compressor.
Why I chose the 70P...
Viair makes a number of larger 12-volt DC compressors for automotive use but I chose the 70P because it can safely connect to a standard cigarette lighter outlet in most vehicles. The larger compressors may draw more current than some vehicles can handle, tripping their circuit breaker (or you may need to connect them directly to your vehicle's battery). The 70P can pull up to 14 amps from your vehicle if it is working hard. However, mine seldom needs that much current and works great with the lighter outlet in my Jeep Wrangler.
Build quality...
The build quality of the 70P is the best I've seen. This is also evident in its quiet operation and minimal vibration. Most of the cheap compressors are very noisy and quickly get very hot. The 70P also runs cool. It takes only a couple of minutes to top up one of my Jeep's BFG All-Terrain tires.
On/Off switch...
An on/off switch is mounted on the side of the compressor to control its operation. Most of the cheap compressors have no such switch.
Pressure gauge...
The 70P can pump up to 150 psi which is high enough for most bicycle street tires. So its built-in pressure gauge covers a fairly wide range. Yet I found its accuracy acceptable at the lower pressure of automotive tires even though, at 35 psi, they don't register very high on the scale. I found it very usuable.
Another nice feature of the built-in pressure gauge is that it shows the tire pressure as soon as you connect the chuck to your tire's valve. By the way, you read the pressure with the pump turned off because, while the pump is on, the pressure cycles and reads a few pounds higher than actual.
Air hose and chuck...
The air hose is very heavy duty rubber (not the cheap vinyl of some compressors). But the biggest surprise was the solid brass twist-on chuck. I doubted that I would like it because I expected it to allow too much air to leak when screwing it on and off a valve. My fears were totally unfounded. And now that I've used it for a while, it has become my favorite chuck. With a few quick turns, it quickly seals to the valve. In my use, it leaked no more air during connection/disconnection than a quick-release type chuck. And yet this chuck will obviously last much, much longer. This is important because the chuck is usually the first part to wear out and need to be replaced. That won't happen to this chuck.
Power line...
The 12-VDC power cable and cigarette lighter plug are heavy-duty. The line is long enough for me to reach both sides of my Jeep Wranger without switching doors. It also has an in-line fuse near the pump end. The plug fits securely in the ligher receptacle.
Carrying case...
The 70P comes with a nice carrying case so the pump can be safely stored and moved.
***The Viair 70P has my highest recommendation.***
Finally, my Amazon.com purchase was fulfilled by a vendor named "Simply 4 Less". I paid $45.94 for the pump and Simply 4 Less shipped it for free. It arrived just a few days after my order was placed and was packed well. At that price and with free shipping, it was a very good value.
Top reviews from other countries
The only big which is a great drawback for this sturdy pump is that the scale which shows the pressure reading is incorrect. It reads ~50-52 psi for the actual tyre pressure of 30-32 psi. If one follows the scale on the device the actual tyre pressure would be off by 20 PSI which would rather damage the tyres and get poor fuel economy.
@Viair why dont you get the entire device quality tested including the scale?
PROS:
- Compact size (for what it is), and the included storage case makes for a neat little package that you can always keep tucked away into some corner of your car
- Very long DC cable makes it easy to reach all tires, at least on a normal sized car (not sure about larger trucks, etc.)
- Good mechanism for securing inflator to tire valve (screw-based)
- Relatively quiet when in use
- Decent inflation speed (takes maybe 2 minutes or so to inflate a tire from 25 to 35 psi)
- Built-in pressure gauge gives a reasonable idea of roughly what pressure you’re at, so you don’t have to check quite as frequently with a proper gauge while inflating
CONS:
- The built-in pressure gauge is tricky to use, since (a) it’s analog, (b) it’s not super accurate at the best of times, and (c) the calibration gets out of whack once you’ve started filling. So I really only use it as a guide while filling, and check final pressure with a dedicated gauge.
CONCLUSION: This pump was an excellent purchase that I’m very happy with! It saves me a good amount of time, hassle, and even a bit of money, since I no longer have to fill up at the gas station. It also offers great peace of mind, since you can keep it in the car with you at all times, for use in emergencies. In fact, just the other day, I was driving along a very rough and remote logging road, where I came across someone who’s spare tire (yes, they had already gotten a flat) was very low on pressure. They were trying to inflate it with a small bike pump! This pump certainly saved their day!
Pros:
- High-quality, heavy metal construction
- Very quiet
- Effective air transit
- High quality, easy to use hose
- Soft carry bag and accessories
Cons (because I had to find a few ones...)
- The pressure gauge could be a bit more precise. Tested with on a tire and it was 3-4 psi off.
- This puppy draws a full 15 amps when it starts. Be careful, some secondary lighter plugs (in trunks) are rated 10-amps only and might have trouble starting it.
