Tip: Since the power cable and IDE cable between this adapter and the IDE drive is flexible, you MUST screw in two tiny screws on the back of the adapter to the hard drive to keep everything together. These two screws are tiny and require a small screwdriver set to attach. This is fine if you are going to do one or two drives, but in my case, I am transferring 20+ drives. I found two old computer case thumb screws that look like this: Solid Brass CPU Case Thumbscrews, 6 Pack and use them to attach this adapter to the drive much faster. No tiny screws, no need for a screwdriver. Fast and easy.
Thanks to StarTech for continuing to make useful if not esoteric products like this.
One note: (NOT a flaw) This comes with everything you should need to do the job it's intended to do. They even provide screws to mount your HDD to the adapter with. It's difficult to tell which is which, but there are actually 2 each of the tiny screws you use to mount your HDD to the adapter with. (Obviously) the smaller ones are for 2.5" drives and the larger ones are for 3.5" drives.
It works GREAT! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this product. Kudos to the manufacturer for making an AWESOME product!!!
I have seen a lot of complaining about having to put the "little screws" in and so forth. It takes seconds and if this is the main killer of the deal for you, get a converter cable and fish it down in the and it will do the same.
The wiring is tight but very manageable if you just guide it to the correct spot when sliding the drive down into the adapter. Press your finger forward into the IDE cable to allow it to fold forward and then gently press the power cable to the left as you push the rest of the way down. Look at the space you have and simply fill it with the cables provided.
FYI - When you are used to cloning SATA drives, there is some shock value at the time it takes to now clone IDE instead. It has been years since anyone really uses IDE as a standard and I cloned a 1.87gb partition. Buy a good book, maybe play some video games.....get some extra work done, whatever; this is not getting done anytime soon but it DOES get that drive cloned.
****extra**** I am using this device in a Startech USB 3.0 cloner. This thing has saved me quite a few times and i see people using this adapter as a connection converter, many people are not even using a cloner and are just interfacing directly to the pc for access. There is absolutely no need to buy this if you just want a connection to the pc. If you plan on just laying it on the desk for a while to access files and maybe clone through software, just buy the converter as a cable. Easier to store, easier to hook the drive up, just easier everything.
These were a great edition to my hard drive tool kit
Insert the Startech.com SATA IDE adapter.
The docking station already worked exactly I needed it to and this adapter just was an extension of how wonderful these line of products have worked for me. I should of paid more attention to the instructions, though. I thought it was something I simply slipped into the dock itself. Instead I have to manually set up each drive with the adapter. I did not see this fact as I was in a rush and using amazon on a mobile device. Attaching the adaptor only takes a few seconds but it now breaths new life into a large collection of IDE drives that are, on average, about 400GB in size.
A reviewer already mentioned that using the small screws on a drive with a screw driver is fine for one or two drives but, when you are doing a large collection, these Solid Brass CPU Case Thumbscrews, 6 Pack are a time saver as well as prevents an incredible amount of frustration. Also, make sure you set up the master/slave settings on your IDE drive.
Overall a recommended purchase. It is a durable product that has saved me hundreds of dollars by breathing new life into my older hard drives which I no longer have to replace with SATA drives for the time being.
Well it did go into the calvery mount with a little force but getting it out again was harder then expected. My thoughts were they could have made it just a hair smaller to fit easier.
What they show you about mounting a drive onto it with the screw holes wont work on IDE drives as mine are too large to go into the houseing and the IDE connection is basically backwards, so even if you had a smaller IDE drive it would have to be put in backward as the connection is on the front at the bottom. They give you short cables to connect the drives with which should be longer as I had to fight to get the cables in connections and the connect the drive power the same way. Cables seem to be short like 2 inches long and hard to put in and take out so your really pulling on the wiring to pull the connections out. I would recommend trying this if you can't find eactly what your looking for.
