A Welcome Distraction

A Welcome Distraction
I was always the kid that got held down by my mom and the nurses when it was time for blood work or vaccinations… it was traumatizing and that trauma became a very real phobia (Trypanophobia) in adulthood. I was able to get a tattoo, get my ears pierced, even get blood work done on my inner elbow, but the thought of an intramuscular vaccine caused severe, blackout, tantrum-like & VERY embarrassing panic attacks. When the Covid vaccine was released, I knew I wanted it to protect myself and my kindergarten students, but I wasn’t sure how I’d be able to face the needle to do it. “You’ll be fine” or “it’s not that bad” or “you’ll barely even feel it” aren’t convincing when your fear is the concept and not the pain, so I kept putting it off. I thought I would wait for the nasal vaccine that’s in development. Then… my school district decided to make masks optional. None of the students at my school are old enough to be vaccinated, but are very much capable of catching/carrying the virus to myself or their peers. I felt like I was backed into a corner, so I immediately ordered a Buzzy and scheduled my first dose for the day after it would be delivered. The buzzy mini is as described… mini. It fits in the palm of what my mom likes to call my “baby hands.” There is a hook that holds the ice pack to the bee. The ice packs are plastic, so it would be very easy to sanitize and pass to someone else to use. The button to turn it on is on the top. It has an auto shutoff feature. It’s very cute and non-threatening, which is nice when you’re in a fearful situation. The morning of my appointment, I applied some lidocaine cream (didn’t work), took a prescribed sedative, and I brought the wings to my Buzzy in a bag filled with other ice packs to keep it frozen. After I checked in at the pharmacy, I hooked the wings on, turned the Buzzy on, and held it against my upper arm where I knew they’d be injecting me. When it was time for the shot, I slid the Buzzy up, looked away, felt a tiny pinch, and it was over. The part I was scared of - feeling the needle inside of my arm - was nonexistent. The vibrations caused by the Buzzy were enough to distract me from hyper-fixating on the jab.I put a lot of effort into conquering my fear and getting vaccinated, but I really don’t think I could have done it without Buzzy. It isn’t a magical cure to needle fear, but it’s a wonderful distraction and pain reliever. This will absolutely be with me any time I need to have a a procedure done. I could also see it being useful in the classroom for some of the smaller boo-boos that don’t require a bandaid or the nurse.
