Advantages of this cold therapy machine over traditional cold packs were that on the body, the machine's pad was lighter and colder than traditional ice packs, and conformed to the shape of the knee better. It held its cold temperature longer. Downsides were that the tubing sweats a bit, and so we would have a damp spot on the floor after hours of use, so we learned to use towels. Also, being stuck to tubing means not getting up as easily or frequently. For these reasons, it is nice to have traditional ice packs as well, for faster and more mobile cold therapy.
We also noticed that cold therapy was needed right after the surgery for some weeks, then we didn't need it as frequently for a time. Once going weight-bearing on the knee again, we were glad we hadn't rented and returned a cold therapy machine, because knee swelling returned. We now know that this was an expected part of recovery, and that a return of swelling phase can appear 6 or more weeks into recovery, making a rental a 2+ month necessity at least. (If renting, that means it would have cost $600+!)
Overall, we were thrilled with how well this cold therapy machine worked, and will keel it in the family for future injuries. Compared to the $300+ per month that medical rentals run (even with insurance), this was more economical, and it's nice to know we can keep it for future use or sell it to recoup costs.
In any event, comparing old Iceman to new Cold Rush, I like the Cold Rush much better for the following reasons;
1. The Cold Rush is quieter. Way quieter. The Iceman was not only loud, but its noise varied a lot as bubbles entered the pump system (...I think this is the result of pump outlet being too close to the pump inlet).
2. The Cold Rush holds more ice more easily. Despite the fact that the Iceman is larger than the Cold Rush, the Cold Rush holds more ice because the shape of the compartment makes it easier to put in blocks or frozen water bottles. If you only care about putting in ice cubes, the Iceman will likely hold more. But everyone who has used these systems knows you need a convenient way to use blocks of ice or you'll be replacing ice every couple of hours. I with the Cold Rush were a couple of inches taller--then my water bottles would fit better. As it is, my wife lets some water out of the bottles and crushes them down a bit so that they'll fit standing up.
3. The Cold Rush varies water flow by varying pump speed. The Iceman varies water flow by pinching the line supplying the water. I didn't think there's be much of a difference between the two, but it's easier for me to get consistent results with the Cold Rush than the Iceman wrt temperature of the pad.
4. The Cold Rush turns off via a switch. The Iceman needs to be unplugged.
5. The Cold Rush has a tight fitting hinged lid. The Iceman has a meh-fitting removable lid. Hinged is far superior....you don't have to have a place to set the lid when you're filling it. Plus the Cold Rush lid seems to seal more tightly
5. I think the Cold Rush has better insulation---the ice seems to last longer, but it's hard to know if it's insulation or a better / tighter lid, a more effective way to reduce water flow, and more bottles of frozen water.
Bottom line: I loved the Iceman for years and it proved to be durable...I got a lot of use out of it before it finally died. But I think the Cold Rush is superior in almost every way.
