It's Alive!

It's Alive!
I purchased it in mid 2018 for my partner's four orthopedic surgeries. The machine has been idle since last Christmas and I expected (in spite of reviews concerning the untimely death of this machine) it to be ready for her latest surgery on her shoulder yesterday. As the Chief Technology Officer of this household, stupid me didn't test it before her surgery. I plugged it in, turned it on and nothin', stone dead, deceased, gone to sing with the choir invisible, no reassuring humming, passed on, ceased to be, met its maker, bereft of life, no doubt pining for the fjords of Iceland. So with nothing to lose (and no warranty) , armed with phillips screwdrivers, pocket knife, and vice grips I performed a post mortem to determine the cause of its untimely demise. Removing screws supplemented with brute force, I was able to open the carcass and discovered what appeared to be a (Chinese made) 12 volt windshield wiper pump (the beige cylindrical part with a clear hose and a black hose in the attached image) connected to the pump speed controller. As an automotive windshield washer geek, I've often accepted the challenge of resurrecting numerous small motors.... most often by simply banging on them. It seems that small 12 volt motor's brushes can build up oxidation on the cummutator after a period of disuse. The oxidation prevents electricty from doing its thing in the motor. So here's my solution for the Offending Ossur: unplug the power cable, remove the motor, remove the four screws holding the pump body to the motor which will reveal the impeller. With your thumb and middle finger, flick the impeller a couple of times to get it to spin.Plug in the 12volt power supply, turn on the pump speed control and see if the impeller spins. If it does, the repair is done, then reassembleAs the picture shows, I didn't t bother to reassemble it...... I like its guts exposed and its 12volt internals aren't going be a threat. If the repair fails, plant something in it.One final observation: It is very important to purge the copious amounts of air in the pad in order to get cold water to flow properly along all the pad's channels. My "burping" method involves placing the attached coolingpad well below the water level of the tank with the pump running, squeezing and pinching the cooling pad to expell the air. Even after running for several minutes, I watched air bubbles move through the clear plastic return hose in my dissected machine.Hopefully this fix will hold for then next several weeks, then it will be back in storage until the next surgery. Maybe the machine would benefit from a monthly brief fill and run just to avoid the need for another post mortem or becoming a planter.
