Worth the money, the attachments work

Worth the money, the attachments work
I have used the matrix drill to do several projects now. I used the reciprocating saw attachment to cut log cross sections for cup coasters (4 to 5" wide logs. The attachment did get hot with extended use and you need to buy better blades than it comes with. I used the router attachment to roundover edges of a small boat deck I built. The router attachment also did a good job chamfering the edges of pine wood planks I glued up to make a coffee table. I have only slightly used the jig saw but it seemed to work well. No problems with the drill at all but I have only drilled and screwed into wood so far. I have the impact driver but have not used it yet. If you have all of the tools the attachments represent, then you don't need this. If you don't and you are on a budget or live in an apartment like I do and have limited space, this is a great buy. Im sure the tools are not as good as their dedicated tool counterparts but they get the job done and I have been pleased with their results. It's better than I thought it would be.

The video says it all. Great product....especially for around the house stuff...even medium to somewhat heavy projects this thing will still hold it's own. It fits well in the hand....it's not crazy heavy like some drills can be when they have to have lots of power....all the attachments are stellar....and you get a lot for your money. Would buy again....but I don't think I'll have to for a long time. It's strong...and doesn't overheat.
Black and Decker has upped it's game.

P.s. I was not paid or given any compensation for this review. I genuinely like these products.

Update: 3-25-18

So I had to laugh considering I just made my review on this drill and gave it glowing marks THE FOLLOWING DAY...it gave me crap and almost caught on fire. So here's the skinny. I was using this drill to mix some stuff (grout, mortar and cement etc) in a 5 gallon bucket that wasn't necessarily easy but I figured with how strong this drill has been that it wouldn't flinch at all, but man did it...and BIG TIME...it was smoking like crazy and then had that zapping sound you hear from power lines and....cracking. I made sure to leave it outside and put it on a surface that wouldn't create any problems if the worst should happen because I literally thought this thing was going to catch on fire. Smoke was going everywhere. I was stunned that this thing complained so aggresively. The weird thing is that I followed up with the cordless drill and it did this without much issue. It wasn't that it was overheated or had been masssively overused by this point because it was fresh right before this happened. The only thing I can guess is that the power drill is more comfortable spinning really fast. Running it at a slower speed so you don't make a mess like I was trying to do...might have been an issue for it. I don't know...I don't have the answers. All I would say is that for anything that's going to be run at full power....and within easy to medium level of difficulty you're going to be ok..but push this baby too hard and she'll remind you that she's the economy class. Stay away from pushing that line and she'll have you thinking that you're using the best in the world. I still don't have any regrets with this purchase. It still runs, I just know where it's limits are now. They're still impressive considering the cost etc. But if you want industrial strength, just remember it's meant to be home use to medium level of intensity. The high level of difficulty should be left to the names you know so well.

I bought this drill 2 years ago, and I also invested in the Matrix bag and 2 attachments, the circular saw and the most useful has been the hammer driver attachment. I have driven 5 inch screws with it and built two decks, driving the screws for the planks with the hammer driver. Thus far, I have had zero problems
Over all, after 2 years of use, I couldn't be more happy with this set. I have used it to install windows, with the circular saw attachment, it is perfect for making small, quick cuts in material without having to get out bigger or more cumbersome tools. The hammer driver drives screws home with ease, and a few that I have pulled out come out hot to the touch from the friction between screw and wood, that is how much torque this think is putting on the screws!
This morning I am adding the jig saw attachment and later I will add the oscillating tool attachment.
Based on the reviews, I periodically just run the drill with no load to get air flow through the drill and cool the motor.
I only gave 2 stars for "Easy to use" because changing attachments can be tricky some times. The tines have to line up just right and the spring clip doesn't always retract.
Reading the reviews, I see some have gotten tools with defective motors or motors that burn out shortly. If you buy this and get a defective one, definitely return it until you get a properly working one. Because once you have one that works right, you will be as pleased with it as I am.
I would definitely recommend this tool, convenient, versatile, reliable.

I am not much of a handyman, but decided to replace our front gate post which had rotted through. For the project I also bought the sander and saw attachments. I used the saw to cut a 12 foot 4x4 roughly in half for the gate post and a later project to replace our mailbox. I had to finish the cut with a hand saw since the blade didn't cut deep enough, but cutting on all four sides of the 4x4 made the remaining cut by hand very easy. Then I used the sander to finish the cut. I then painted the post and I used the drill to attach the bottom of the post to a simpson strong-tie CBSQ. I planted the CBSQ in the ground and the gate works much better. The ability to change attachments really helped a lot.

I have had battery powered drills and over time it is just too much of a pain to keep them charged or replace the batteries. So I went with corded, since I do DIY projects sporadically. It worked great.

I would buy this again and am very happy with this and the attachments I purchased.

I have used this for a few months now, and it has worked well. I use the drill most, but also got the 3" circular saw attachment and have been very happy with it. Quick to swtich between these two. I don't have a table saw, but with this attachment I don't think I would need it - unless I plan to do a lot more of this type of cutting. Usually I use my miter saw for short cuts, but this is great for longer straight cuts with lighter lumber or panels, not too thick or hard. My last drill, the Ryobi - corded model D47C lasted a long time (5-6 years I think), and was due for replacement.

Pistol grip and handle ergonomics makes for a perfectly balanced drill, weighs only 2.5 pounds. Speed control is excellent and the slow speeds are handled smoothly. The slow speeds are important to me for precision angled drilling. Only if you squeeze the trigger to the end do you get full speed. On the drill it says 0-1500 rpm but on the box it says 0-1200 rpm which makes no difference. The power cable is a generous 7 feet long. The chuck is replaceable should it wear out, but is not perfect, it has just a bit of run out. But then many hand drill are the same.

It is the only corded drill on the market with a clutch, a 10 position clutch. For driving screws it prevents overtightening and possible kick backs. This feature, oddly enough, is only found on battery operated models. It was the reason I purchased this model.

I would not use this drill for an extensive project like building a deck but it's perfect for occasional home use. I like very much that the body of the drill is straight and parallel to the drill bit because for inclined holes, I can sight the angle of the housing to the drill bit. Some drills have a bulging body that makes this impossible.

Lastly, why has no one commented on it's low noise? I was surprised it makes very little noise, if I were to guess, about 60db on slow speeds and on high speeds it requires no hearing protection for sure. Makita is known to be quiet, but I think this is as good or better in that department.

I paid $55 but amazon plays with the pricing and bumps it up for no reason except to get more out of your wallet. Use the chrome camalizer extension and monitor price drops, then buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm in love! This Matrix series is so seductive
Reviewed in Canada on July 15, 2014
I'm in love! This Matrix series is so seductive, so easy to use and interchange, and so efficient.

I've been hanging onto my poor overworked B&D 14.4V Firestorm Cordless Drill (FSD142) with the quick connect chuck that was probably the basis for the Matrix series, way longer than I should have. But it too was/is so efficient to work with, having the quick connect chuck with a bit holder underneath. Especially after my first one burnt out and I got a used replacement, but kept the chuck from my first one - thus being able to quick connect even faster, lol. But when my second one started to bite the dust a couple of months ago, I started researching, hoping B&D had come up with something similar, and they had! The Matrix series! I originally got the cordless 20V version in a kit with a chuck, a jigsaw and a sander, then stumbled upon the corded version through reading reviews here on Amazon on the cordless kit. And maybe it's not the most powerful drill out there, and truth be known, I haven't yet been able to use it a lot, but it has handled well with all the attachments above in the jobs I have done with it. It is indeed a great companion to the cordless version. I have done regular drilling with it, in addition to quite a bit of masonary drilling, and it did an excellent job. I read a review here about someone burning the motor out of one while drilling into cement, but I had no such problems. I think it's important to remember that your drill is only half of the combination - you also have to use the proper drill bits for the job at hand. Any drill could burn out if you over worked it for too long - and masonary is a tough one. I did some sanding and cutting with it also - once again, it handled well.

No, it's not a really high end tool, but for the average person doing average repair jobs with the restrictions of an average income, Black and Decker usually does a pretty good job. Efficiency is important to me, and I haven't really seen the major drill manufacturers doing much innovation in that department - so even if money wasn't an obstacle, I wouldn't be interested in throwing my money at them. My first B&D cordless drill that I referred to above, has taken quite a beating over the eight or nine years it worked for me, so I'm hoping my Matrixes will work just as long. I'm not a professional handy-person, just mainly repairs around the house kind of thing, and doing occasional building. I'm moving into a different house very soon, and there will be work to be done - and I'm really looking forward to it now. I guess I will see just how good these really are.
