4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 159 ratings

"Personal presence is difficult to define but easy to recognize. People with presence carry themselves in a way that turns heads. When they talk, people listen. When they ask, people answer. When they lead, people follow. Personal presence can help you get a date, a mate, a job, or a sale. It can help you lead a meeting, a movement, or an organization.

Presence is not something you’re born with—anyone can learn these skills, habits, and traits. Award-winning speaker and consultant Dianna Booher shows how to master dozens of small and significant things that work together to convey presence. She details how body language, manners, and even your surroundings enhance credibility and build rapport. You’ll learn to use voice and language to demonstrate competence, deliver clear and memorable messages, and master emotions. You’ll learn to think strategically, organize ideas coherently, and convey to others genuine interest, integrity, respect, and reliability.

Take her self-assessment to measure your progress. With Dianna Booher’s expert, entertaining advice, you can have the same kind of influence as the most successful CEOs, celebrities, and civic leaders.

Creating Personal Presence is a must read for anyone in a leadership role or anyone that desires to develop and define themselves as a leader. As Booher notes, this book covers the mental, physical and emotional aspects of presence. A person's presence is defined by how they LOOK (body language, dress, surroundings)- TALK (the words one chooses, tone and voice inflections)- THINK (how one organizes ideas and information, deciding what, when and how to communicate them) and ACT- (attitudes, values and competence one's actions reveal). Booher uses real life situations and individuals to describe both effective or ineffective leaders. The tips and techniques that are offered in this book are easy to use, practical and applicable to situations both personally and professionally. This is not a self-help book- it's a professional development guide. This book is now a must read-must apply guide for my team in their professional development.

There is some excellent information in this book for men who must wear suits because of their profession or corporate culture. However, the insistence on doing so for any leadership role is dated, considering corporate cultures of some of our best companies (Google, Apple, etc.) Space devoted to creating a presence while presenting oneself in a "business casual" environment would make the book far more up-to-date and useful. There are places where a business suit is far out of place, and where creating a presence is required.

That said, the information that the book does contain is useful beyond expectations. The author does a great job in all other aspects of the subject.

I’m a project manager for an international Bible translation agency and a candidate for my local city council. This book has brought much to life about effectively communicating in multiple kinds of situations. Two minute conversations 20 minute presentations, I believe this book would prove a great asset.
It’s time to pick up my next book by Diane Booher.

The book is okay; I didn't necessarily learn any game changing tips or practices. I think it's a good book to read as an accompaniment to other things like career counseling.

I found this book very easy to read and digest. It is full of helpful hints that can make you feel like you seen and heard, instead of like you are blending into the wall. This book is about having presence, being a leader, and getting your thoughts and ideas across. The author has a lot of consulting experience, and numerous other books, seminars etc. to draw on. A world of experience, that when pulled all together shines a new light on sprucing up your own personal presence.

It is no surprise that prolific author Dianna Booher's latest book is so well-written. What was a surprise was how much I learned and immediately could apply. There are a lot of books on presentation skills. However, not many books discuss the ways to create Personal PRESENCE. This is a great read. Her tips make sense and are right on point for anyone who wants to talk, think and act like a leader. I used at least two tips today in a speech I delivered. Thanks Dianna!

Much of presence has to do with non-verbal communication and messages we send and receive. This is a topic for interactive or at least video instructions. Booher does a good despite the obvious challenge. The book is worth and it only works if you put this stuff to work an.d practice it

If you're wanting an easy read so you can pat yourself on the back at the accomplishment of finishing a book, this will be great for you.

If, however, you prefer substance, want to read relevant examples, or thinks it's painfully ironic to see someone use obvious fill words/ sentences while telling you to be concise in your speech - run away from this book.
