TVP is heavily processed

I have been satisfied with other Harmony House dehydrated products, so I decided to give the TVP a try from the rave reviews. I did not expect this to be meat substitute. My main concern is that the chickenish chunks contains partially hydrogenated oil (trans fat). Definitely not what I was expecting from a company that otherwise sells healthy dehydrated foods for backpacking. The secondary problem is that the type of seasoning/flavoring used for this is really artificial tasting (just like concentrated instant ramen). Perhaps the ingredients had to be used for stable shelf life, but I would rather not consume this than to add it to an otherwise healthy backpacking meal.

I was a bit skeptical about this stuff, that's why I got the sampler to try it out. I have to say It is really very good. These are very nice for a meat alternative. Very close to the real deal. If cooked correctly, meat eaters will not notice the difference. They are very simple to cooked and season. They can be added to many dishes. I would choose this as a meat alternative over mushrooms, tofu, heart of palms, walnuts, seitan, etc... Very good brand. The only bad comment is that the flavored ones did not have a taste, they all taste plain. I do like the different sizes they come in, so as to prepare them in different ways.

We have enjoyed trying these. I like a good TVP. A bad one is vile. This one is pretty good, even my husband liked it.
We are not vegetarian, my husband is a carnivore more than an omnivore. I rarely like meet substitutes that do not accept what they are and what the ingredients actually taste like in an attempt to taste like something they never will. However, we both actually enjoyed these and will get some for storage - it is a great backup when we didn't thaw anything or are short that week.
This is a good meet substitute in many recipes. It does not taste exactly like the meat in question...no shock, it shouldn't. It is good in the recipes, has a good texture when done 1:1 with water (experiment a little), and it has a good flavor.
We haven't tried all of them yet. The beef bits are great in tomato sauce and beans. The ham is useful for breakfast, mild flavor but works well.

So, I ordered these to make dehydrated meals for backpacking and to try out some flavored TVP products, hoping to find a better/cheaper "meat" than the ones available at most grocery stores.

We LOVED the "beef-ish" chunks and bites. We but them into ramen with some dried veggies and it was great. We tried it out at home too and we liked the "beef-ish" and "chicken-ish" products better than the Gardein and Morningstar "beef" and "chicken" strips. Very easy to work with and good enough to be the center of a meal (e.g. "beef" in Stroganoff or for a hot beef sandwich).

Three stars because Amazon only offers the sample pack!!! I need more CHUNKS!

I've been vegan for 4+ years now and this was my first experience cooking with TVP. We made a Chicken Pot Pie with the Chickenish Chunks and it was delicious. I recommend rehydrating with Veggie broth instead of water to give it a little extra flavor. Some of the products come pre flavored and some don't so make sure you know what you are using and season accordingly. Don't be like those people who take a block of tofu out of the package, throws it whole into a skillet, heats it up, eats it unseasoned and then says tofu is gross. As a meat eater, you wouldn't boil chicken unseasoned and expect it to be delicious, have some common sense.

I like this TVP, but it's all just texture and size of individual pieces. There is no flavor--I use it in meatless soups and stews to boost the protein. The pink "ham" TVP works great in split pea soup! The "chicken" versions are really convincing since chicken doesn't have much flavor anyway. The "beef" ones are perfect in spaghetti sauce (small pieces) and stews (larger pieces). It's filling and the texture isn't mushy like a lot of TVP. It stays pretty firm through cooking. You can soak it in various broths to flavor it if you prefer to add some additional flavor.

The ingredients listed in the description: Textured soy flour, sugar, water, soybean oil, autolyzed yeast extract, hydrolized corn protein (hydrolized corn protein, autolyzed yeast extract, partially hydrogenated cottonseed and soybean oils, thiamine hydrochloride, dextrose, disodium inosinate, disodium guanylate), salt, spice, natural smoke flavoring (partially hydrogenated soybean oil, natural smoke flavorings)

The actual ingredients include only soy flour and caramel color, and red 40 on the hamish bits. These are unflavored bits of TVP.

I was so excited to try all the different flavors, receiving multicolored bland TVP of various sizes was a huge disappointment. I definitely think it is misleading to call these different 'flavors.' Don't know if they only recently changed their ingredients, but won't be ordering again, as the whole point was wanting to not have to figure out how to season TVP differently. Buy Bob's Red Mill TVP, it doesn't pretend to be flavored, and you get much more for the price!

This sample pack was a nice way for me to decide which products worked for me. I was able to decide with my tastebuds which to order in the future. Please note, there are no instructions on the package. So, if you have never used dehydrated foods or soy "meat" substitutes, you may have a bit of research or trial and error. I also found one tiny bit of help on their website. Even looking at the recipe section was not useful. This is my only drawback. I found using double the water to dry goods and bring to a boil then simmer for 10 minutes worked for me. You have to find the best for you. I also rehydrated with making a "beef stew" in the crockpot. This was very good as it became more tender over the hours. I rehydrated the "ground taco beef" in boiling water for about 5 minutes, then made crock pot enchiladas. This was also excellent. The "ham" was excellent in my split pea crock pot soup and in turnip greens. I will buy larger quantities of my favorites from this selection.
