Harry and Harriet homeowner's tactical tomahawk!
4 Stars
Harry and Harriet homeowner's tactical tomahawk!
Cons- The Sheath, somebody at SOG needs a beat down, STAT. Please comment on where to get kydex.. The Grip, make that a stern beatdown... The sidewalk kommando death head emblem is a prosecutor's wet dream if one ever used their SOG hawk in self defense.Pros- as advertised a significant evolution of the Vietnam tomahawk. Blade is easily sharpened. Stainless steel is suitable for casual owners and the swamp I live in. Hits above its weight class as a tomahawk should. According to the RMJ website, tactical tomahawks are breaching tools capable of light chopping/cutting and personal defense. This SOG survival Tomahawk is on the low end of what I consider capable. Never a SOG fan, wanted my first tactical hawk to be stainless steel and full tang. The scaxe4 was also a contender. Size and weight won for the SOG. Chopping is akin to a capable large knife. Great for small branches and making kindling and fuel from found branches. The firesteel is even cooler if you remember dryer lint! The Sheath is garbage and barely fits a 2" belt. ... Having used the original Vietnam Tomahawk MANY times as a boy scout bucking firewood, never wanted one. In the seventies dads coming back from the nam gave the boys their hawks making me wonder how much fighting these saw. The same men would never hand us a combat knife.. This SOG survival hawk would have been great when I was a warehouse clerk. Pallet bands, pallets would not stand a chance.Struggles with clearing sticky vines and wild roses, digs well, breaks cinder blocks and bricks. The textured hammer areas will drivea six penny nail into cured Maple. Nail pulling is iffy for me. Fuzzsticks and carving are easy although some will end up taping the handle. The paracord wrap is poorly done. I did a better job on my Cold Steel bushman, that wrap held for over a decade and was still right when removed. This cord shifted after five minutes of chopping. Throws well if you are into that, might want to remove the firesteel first. Firesteel is mostly a gimmick but it works, may want to remove it for chopping according to some. Cannot comment on self defense capability due to lack of experience axe fighting and hope it stays that way.For civilians who are of a be prepared mindset this is a handy versatile tool. Camping and hiking it makes a dandy boil water fire making axe, will pound tent stakes too. Security personnel with buildings and parking lots may want to keep one on tuck. My opinion only, a first responder or warfighter should invest more. For civilians who want a small footprint versatile tool it would be five stars with a decent sheath. The original had a better sheath. If I was still doing security at a large venue, one of these might be nearby but not worn of course. If you have to break into or out of something these tools can be clutch! Have not breached with this tool but have gone through the odd door collecting bail jumpers. If doing that again would definitely bring my SOG survival hawk. Also use mine as a primary cutting tool for "woods loafing" or day hikes when one doesn't need an axe. Light and handy when you didn't know you were going to need it.First responder? Nah fam...Weapon? Maybe not.Handy tool for those so inclined? Four stars all day!
