Step 1: Fill the petri dish with milk.

Step 2: Add one drop of each color of food coloring all over milk in the petrie dish.

Step 3: Place one drop of liquid dish soap in the petri dish. Watch what happens.

Lava Flask Experiment

Step 1: Fill your flask 1/3 full with water.

Step 2: Add food coloring of your choice to the water.

Step 3: Fill the rest of the flask with vegetable oil.

I purchased this for my daughter for Christmas. She loves creating things and "mixing" potions so I thought this would be great. It's a great little carrying case and the latches are secure and easy for her to open and close (she's 5 years old). There are some fun stickers to add to the myriad pieces of lab equipment. There is a book that has some different experiments to try out (all completely kid friendly and safe, but may need parent's help with kids 5 and under). All in all this was a great purchase and we're very happy with it.

UPDATE TO ORIGINAL REVIEW (with rating raise from 1 star to 4 stars): We received the replacement kit sent by Amazon, and this one had all the right parts. Great service by Amazon. Now that we have all the pieces, I can say that my 6 year old daughter really loves it. She's done several of the experiments, and loved them so much she wanted to show every friend and family member who would watch. The carry case for the set is neat and keeps all the parts and pieces neat and tidy. The variety of experiments and equipment pieces is nice. She's learning some practical skills like measuring out liquids, along with some basic science principles. All in all a very fun set for generating interest in science and keeping the experience fun for little ones. We like it!
ORIGINAL REVIEW: We researched this kit prior to purchasing it and knew it doesn't come with microscope batteries or ingredients for the experiments. So we stocked up on the necessary batteries and bought tomato juice, corn syrup, corn starch, and a bunch of other ingredients so it would be ready for play. My excited 6 year old daughter opened the kit on Christmas morning only to discover 5 of the kit items were missing - no round bottom flask, no conical flask, no funnel, no conical flask with dividers, and no jar with lid. Just weren't there. Can't do much of anything with the set since it's missing a bunch of items. Contacted manufacturer, they said they don't replace missing parts (shame on them) so we're having Amazon send a replacement (kudos to Amazon). The kit itself, assuming it included the right parts, is cute and looks fun for kids. Fingers are crossed that our next set will have the right pieces. Will update my review once we get the replacement set, until then it's 1 star for leaving out so many important items.

The microscope isn't great which is to be expected but they loved it came with it and just the sheer amount of variety and stuff that comes with it that is reusable makes this kit very well worth the purchase. Not to mention it's gold to the project mc2 fan recipient. The material itself is of course not of highest quality but we have had no problems from it and the kit is holding up great.

My 10-year-old daughter wanted this for Christmas. It was at the top of her list. She has enjoyed the very few episodes of the corresponding TV series. I thought it would make a good gift, since it seemed to encourage girls to enjoy science, which she does, so I ordered it, even though I thought it was a bit pricey.
The kit is packaged in a very fancy case. It does not, however, contain much that you could not find in your kitchen cupboards, so you are paying for the branding.
My daughter was thrilled to get the kit, and she says she likes doing the experiments. However, she has not done many of the experiments, and when i suggest playing with it, she mostly declines. Perhaps she will like it better when she is a bit older.

Let's see, my daughter is still excited to play with this every day and it is weeks past Christmas! This is the best "toy" I have ever bought when you consider not only the excitement when she opened it and the fact that she hasn't grown bored in the slightest bit. She has done the experiments that came with the kit and found new ones to try, either by curiousity or by ideas she found in a book or on you tube. My daughter is 7, this was a perfect gift for her! She asked for the dolls and likes them but I think she wanted them mostly for the experiments that came with them.
