About this item
- E-NE MATTE BLACK BELL: The Crane E-ne is a compact bell that can be positioned on top of the handlebar like other bells or in front of the bar for a more aero, less visible profile. Fits 22.2-31.8mm OD bars. The MATTE BLACK model has an aluminum dome with a matte black finish.
- BEAUTIFUL, RESONANT SOUND: Brass or aluminum alloy dome-shaped bell for a bright and pleasant ring. The ring of a brass bell resonates longer vs other materials. Crane Bell knows the pleasantness of the ring should come second to safety and loudness, but we choose to make BOTH a priority.
- PREMIUM JAPANESE BELL: Crane Bell Co. Ltd is bringing beautiful Japanese craftsmanship to your bike! We didn’t compromise quality on any part of this bell. Our bicycle bells are truly unique and for bikers who care about the little things. Rust-resistant stainless steel mount and springs. No plastic parts.
- VERSATILE, UNIVERSAL, COMPACT DESIGN: Can be positioned up on top of the bars or in front of the bars for a more aero, less noticeable profile. Takes up very little real estate, so you can fit other accessories like a bike light, phone or GPS. This bicycle bell looks equally at home on stylish city bikes, carbon fiber road bikes, and mountain bikes. Smaller, more aesthetically pleasing to the ears than a bike horn.
- EASY, SCRATCH-FREE INSTALLATION FOR ALL HANDLEBARS: Installs with one hex key. The stainless steel mounting strap micro-adjusts to fit diameters from 22.2mm to 31.8mm. Fits mountain bikes, road bikes, kid’s bikes, and e-bikes. The stainless steel mount is dipped in vinyl so protect your handlebars from being scratched and to reduce slipping.

This bell, while also being compact and attractive, does a good job at its main purpose: being loud enough to get people's attention so you don't have to make yourself hoarse yelling "On your left!" all day.
Cons:
* Kind of a knockoff of a higher quality US product
* Not artisinally crafted in San Francisco
* Difficult to ring softly (usually not much of a problem)
Pros:
* As far as Spurcycle knockoffs go, this is higher quality and less of a blatant knockoff than the other comparable bells out there
* Not $50-$60
* Manufacturer is more well-known and reputable than the Chinese knockoff brands
* Compact, stylish looks
* Loud, crisp ring that's quite effective at getting people's attention
Overall I'm pretty happy with it. I did notice one minor quirk that other reviewers mentioned, that it takes a bit of practice to figure out how far back to pull the hammer. A graph of hammer distance vs. noise would look roughly like this:
-------------====##################
That's probably inaccurate, but the idea is that pulling it back slightly results in an almost-inaudible "thud." (which, as another reviewer mentioned, you might end up doing in a panic), and pulling it back more than maybe 40% results in the loud, bright "DING!" you would expect. Sometimes, if it's quiet out, you might attempt to ring it a bit softer so you don't terrify an upcoming pedestrian, but it's pretty tricky to hit that narrow sweet spot of audible but not piercing. I don't consider this much of a problem, though, since most of the time you just want to be heard, and it does a good job of that.
I installed this model on one bike the same day I installed a Spurcycle bell. Both are quite nice. My brother in law, an acoustic engineer, tested the frequency of both and noted that the Crane is more apt to be heard by elderly people. Different frequency. I can’t claim competence in this area. Both sound great and the Spurcycle is elegant. But the Crane does sound better to me. It evokes a priest’s gong. Am I being presumptuous? Probably. I’m keeping both. Just don’t be deterred from buying a Crane bell from reputable merchants. They are wonderful.
