I had to turn it off and on to reset it on occasion and rarely did it drop internet but that was maybe my phone. ( My phone was 1 month old at the time, Samsung 10 +). Turning my wifi on my phone on and off solved that issue. All in all to travel to several countries and have on the average 3 phones using the device ( my son streaming often ) we had no real issues and were very happy with this product. However initial set up is not explained and the website does not help. It is not user friendly. After that though, turn it on and your good to go. $99.00 for unlimited internet for a month on 5 devices at a time is a great deal.
Wow, this is perhaps the worst new product experience I have ever had, and that's saying a lot.
Bought new unit, paid extra for fast shipping because I'm about to leave on a foreign trip tomorrow. Followed their instructions, can not get online, can not create an account, can not do anything. No meaningful instructions (wesbite and error messages are in badly translated semi-English, bad punctuation - looks like no native English speaker has reviewed any of it.
Error screens that come up filled with Chinese characters.
Other errors screens that come up in English are nonsensical, like "Please check whether the device is started normally" - what the heck does that mean? What is a USER supposed to DO with that?
Basic Usability 101 failure.
Note: I have just spent the last 2 hours just trying to REGISTER FOR AN ACCOUNT - which has failed every time. Think about that, what could be the most basic, simple, straightforward task a development team could expect every user to accomplish, and it's just a complete trainwreck - that's how bad this thing is. If I hadn't just thrown away $300 on it, and if I didn't need a mobile wifi solution tomorrow, it would be laughable.
No support available, nada.
Just $300 and a few precious hours down the drain.
The concept sounds great. The design appears smooth, but the execution is just stunningly broken. Bad, really bad.
I really had high hopes for this thing, but trying to get it to work makes me want to shoot myself (after first shooting the morons who designed it).
Thinking about buying one of these? DON"T. Run, RUN VERY FAST away.
The Orange Hockey Puck From Hell does not deserve your money.
This is a perfect example of how NOT to make something useful. It's the opposite of useful.
Companies that make junk like this need to be put out of business.
BLEH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I give up. I suggest you give up on these idiots before you send them any of your money. Good luck.
UPDATE 2018 05 28:
This product continues to fail. These guys demonstrate, repeatedly, that they just don't know how to write software and fail miserably at customer service.
On 5/24/2018 I get email from them claiming that "Your Skyroam Solis just got better. Update today!"
Translating from their cheerful marketing nonsense, that means: "We have a firmware update for your unit, it should help, so go update it now."
They claim faster startup, "faster and more reliable global network" (hmmm) and more detailed connection status & data usage info. They say to update now, or the update will install automatically on startup in a few days. OK, I have a trip starting in a few weeks, and although I'll probably buy a local SIM because I don't trust this thing, I'll try the update, maybe that will make using it less miserable.
So here are their instructions for the update:
1. Connect to your Skyroam Solis WiFi
2. Log in to your account
3. Select "i" information icon at top left
4. Click on the red emergency update icon and confirm
5. Update will run automatically (will take up to `5 minutes)
OK here goes. I fire up my orange hockey puck of misery, wait for the loooong startup.
On my iPad, I connect to the skyroam wifi, so far so good. I browse to my account login page and sign in.
It takes a loooooong time but eventually the page loads and I do see the "i" icon for information. I click that.
There's a device Information page that loads. It shows a few details about the device.
There is no "red emergency update icon". There's no buttons at all. There are no controls, no menus, nothing clickable. Nothing. Just a few details about the device.
I've tried restarting the thing. I've tried switching the wifi off and on. I've tried reloading the page. Same results. Nothing.
FAIL. AGAIN.
These guys don't know how to do the most basic thing. Every time. They are completely inept.
Stay away.
I'm now buying local SIMs for my mobile devices when I travel because this thing is so unreliable.
1. As multiple reviewers have already mentioned... If you purchase this device from Amazon you MUST contact tech support to register it. I did not see this mentioned anywhere in the literature/manuals provided by the company and it only became evident once the initial 1GB allotment of data expireed and the device stopped working. It still let me continue to purchase daypasses and data but not use them.
2. After you register the device: To use a daypass, you NEED to activate your cellphone's international plan (even if you are connected to the internet via WiFi). This is because you need an internet connection to log into the Solis App (to get access to your daypasses) and you need to still have an internet connection when you connect your phone to the device (done through WiFi, thus requiring the use of mobile data). The company advertises two other ways to initiate a daypass, they don't work (or at least I could not get them to after 14 days and three attempts at tech support). This would not be as frustrating if you could activate multiple daypasses (covering your entire trip), you can't. You must activate one daypass then wait till it expires to activate another.
This required me to use my cellphones international plan the ENTIRE TRIP (as I use Verizion and I get charged per day/24hr period). This effectively negated the reason for having a Solis.
This product would be grate with three changes: (1) notify consumers (in their quick start guide) that they need to register the unit through the website before they buy data/passes via the app. (2) Find a way to allow someone to login to their app and start a daypass without any other internet connection other then the skyroam (the company says you can, I had no luck doing so, even with tech support). (3) Allow people to activate multiple daypasses at once.
Unfortunately, as it stands, this is a product that severally under-preforms. Don't buy it.
Top reviews from other countries
I subscribed to the GoData plan. £7 per month, until I decide to cancel. However, if you run out before the month, you can buy another £7 (1gb worth) but this runs out when your normal data would run out. I ran out 2 days before my. Monthly renewal and therefore this additional data only lasts for 2 days in this instance. Bit of a waste.
If it could run for 30 days BESIDE the monthly data it would be BRILLIANT.
Very bulky. Won't fit in pocket. But glad I bought it.
Por cierto, muy buen soporte del fabricate a dudas.
