I was looking for a birthday gift for a dear friend to send along with an Amazon gift card. I knew one of her passions was working on puzzles with her young granddaughter. So I did a search under “Toys and Games” to see some of the offerings on Amazon and, happily, came across this brand new gem from Buffalo Games and Puzzles. Oh my! LOL! Being quite familiar with my friend’s wonderful sense of humor, I knew immediately “Norman Catwell” was for her. In fact, at such a bargain price, I couldn’t just pass by this one. I ended up buying one for myself, also, with plans to buy several more to give as gifts.As for the product itself, the box is not quite as sturdy as some I’ve had, but sturdy enough not to feel cheaply made. It’s not flimsy and won’t fall apart. When I open the box, I see the pieces are loose instead of being enclosed in a plastic bag. However, I encountered no puzzle dust which, of course, is a big plus for those who might be bothered by it. As an added bonus, Buffalo Games generously includes a glossy poster of the puzzle, as well, which is very appreciated as it serves as an accurate guide. The pieces themselves are sturdy, a good thickness, which means they won’t easily bend. The cut of the puzzle is standard, no odd shapes, and the pieces fit together easily. The puzzle finish is glossy. My personal preference is semi-gloss, as sometimes the glossy finish can reflect light, making it harder to see the colors. However, this is minor and by no means distracts from the fun of putting together this puzzle. The image’s colors are vibrant and my computer screen displays them accurately, but then I have very good monitors.All in all, it’s not a hard puzzle, but a lighthearted, relaxing one which shouldn’t take too much time to put together, since it’s only 300 pieces. I usually do 1000-piece-plus puzzles by Ravensburger and White Mountain. I’m delighted to see that Buffalo Games is in league with companies who manufactured, in my opinion, some of the best quality puzzles we find here at Amazon. I’m really a stickler for well-made puzzles since my dollars are limited and hard-earned, and I like to get as much bang for the buck as I can get. I feel this puzzle fits that bill.As for the subject matter of the puzzle--what can I say? Whenever I look at the finished product, I visualize Norman Rockwell sitting at his easel, gazing at his reflection in a mirror as he paints his self-portrait in his signature realistic style. The artist, Lucia Heffernan, successfully transforms a tabby into Norman Catwell. The cat’s matter-of-fact expression tells the whole story. He studies his own image with quiet confidence and great concentration, striving to stay true to what he sees in the mirror, as he paints with painstaking accuracy his self-portrait on canvas. I dissolve in laughter each time I see it. Just as he knows he breathes air (since he can paint, I have no doubt he knows he breathes air), he knows he IS the lion...period. There is no inflated ego, no fanfare. It just is what it is, just who he is and he paints with his heart, knowing exactly what he sees. He is comfortable in his own skin. Ha-ha-ha-ha!!! What’s even funnier is, in my own daydreaming, I can relate to the cat!So, if you like whimsical and would like a puzzle where you don’t have to invest a lot of time putting it together, I think you’ll like this one. I do recommend this product wholeheartedly! Bravo, Buffalo Games, for giving us artist Lucia Heffernan’s interpretation of Lionheart!
