Belichick and Brady: Two Men, the Patriots, and How They Revolutionized Football Hardcover – October 4, 2016
Purchase options and add-ons
No head coach-quarterback pair has been more successful in NFL history than Bill Belichick and Tom Brady of the New England Patriots. They have won four Super Bowls, six AFC championships, and thirteen division titles. And now Holley takes us inside their relationship, dissecting how these men and their team came to dominate football.
Belichick, a genius as a defensive coordinator, had been a five-year flop as head coach of the Cleveland Browns. Upon his controversial arrival in Foxboro, though, he quickly began to remake the team at every level--scouts, coaches, and players. His bold, calculated approach had fans up in arms, sportswriters questioning his intelligence, and players wondering how long they would last on the team.
Meanwhile, buried down in the 2000 NFL draft, the 199th overall pick was a skinny kid from the University of Michigan named Tom Brady who many scouts thought would never succeed at a professional level. The lowest of the four quarterbacks on the team's depth chart, he appeard to be just one of the guys. Like Belichick, though, he lived for football, and he knew the playbook as well as Drew Bledsoe, the franchise quarterback. And when Bledsoe was injured in 2001, Brady took the job and vowed to never give it back.
The handsome Brady became a star, wearing hand-tailored suits, appearing in movies and on magazine covers, and marrying a supermodel. Belichick, with his trademark cut-off hoodies, was the opposite of a fashion plate. Together, the odd couple somehow rose above controversies and tragedies. Draft picks were lost, suspensions given, lawsuits filed. As their legends have grown, so have their critics, with some of those critics operating from NFL headquarters. Despite that, with Belichick's deft and brilliant strategy in the draft year in year out and Brady's exacting decision-making on the field, the Patriots cultivated an atmosphere of success and won a stunning 75 percent of their games together. Respected and reviled, Belichick and Brady have set the bar high for excellence in a league designed for parity. They have rarely been understood. Until now. Based on dozens of interviews with former and current players, coaches, and executives, Belichick and Brady is an eye-opening look at the minds, motives, and wild ambitions of two men who have left an indelible mark on the game of football.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2016Loved this picture of two of the most interesting characters in sports. Though I have been a fan and remember most of the highlights of these events, the presentation and attention to detail as well as the time lines of the story brought everything back so vividly. Well written with a lot of facts but also a lot of insight, I really found this to be a enjoyable read. The end point is perfect for the beginning of the season with Brady returned. Love these guys and the New England sports scene!!!!!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2017I enjoyed this book, but it could have been so much more.
As I sat down to review this book, much of Bob L.'s excellent review on 10/12/16 rang true. The book is a breezy, season-by-season recap of New England Patriots history and personalities from 2000 to early 2016, with Bill Belichick and Tom Brady of course featured prominently in the narrative. For many Patriots fans, that will be enough. What it lacks, however is any kind of in-depth or close-up analysis of the relationship between the two or how to divvy up credit for their incredible run of success - which is what seems to be promised by the promotional materials for the book and what I think may serious fans most would love to read. There is some interesting discussion of Belichick's philosophy of roster-building, which involves "spreading the wealth" across the full roster rather than paying high salaries to a few superstars (all teams have the same salary "cap" they cannot exceed, so it's not that the Patriots are cheap). This approach extends to trading down to accumulate more, lower priced draft picks (or future picks) from other teams. Of course, this is already common knowledge to close followers of the Patriots, and these kinds of analyses are few and far between in the book. Quantitative analyses and statistics for the most part are ignored, other than to describe individual game results.
The author also misses opportunities to convey the suspense and drama of many of the incredibly exciting Patriots games over the years, as if their outcome was pre-ordained. For example, the final game described in the book is the 2016 AFC Championship game between New England and Denver. I vividly remember the final Patriots drive as they struggled to catch Denver. It included a long strike from Brady to Gronkowski on 4th and 10 followed by a 4th down TD catch by Gronk to bring the score to 20-18 Denver - the only Gronk touchdown I can remember without the patented Gronk power spike. It then all came down to a 2 point conversion that Denver successfully staved off. The thrilling game was much more competitive than the Super Bowl that followed. Another of many layers to the story was that a 2-point conversion was required because the Pats' kicker had earlier missed an extra point - no doubt influenced by the new rule championed by Belichick that moved the extra point try further away from the goalposts. Holley's version? Six bland sentences, concluding "The seventeenth and final Brady-Manning game lacked the artistic flourishes that many of the sixteen before it had. In the end, the Patriots made it competitive, but they lost 20-18." Granted, there wasn't space in the book to give an in-depth review of 18 seasons of games, but side stories about the Red Sox and Bruins certainly could have given way to a few more about Patriots games. And too often, just as suspense builds, it is dissipated by the author quickly moving on to the next topic.
In the end, the timing of the book is curious - there is no narrative arc or conclusion that the book builds to; it just kind of ends randomly, when the Appeals court overturns the lower court decision about "Deflategate." We see that Belichick and Brady are very competitive and very successful - but did anyone doubt that? Other than those facts, there's no thesis, no grand synthesis, no real unveiling of the mystery of how year after year the Patriots could have been so consistently successful in a game with a huge component of chance and luck. Shall we say, the end is deflating?
Still, if you want to learn more about the ins and outs of the Patriots, this covers a lot and is an easy read. If that's sufficient, I would not discourage you from reading the book. I truly did enjoy the it, even if I already had read much of the information in the press over the years.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2017I loved this book. The Brady/Belichick partnership is one astonishing pairing. I enjoyed reading about the rise to fame and am an ardent and enthusiastic fan even though I live in Houston. I believe wholeheartedly Brady was innocent of deflating balls and that Goodell is an arrogant SOB for his determination to destroy this player. Read the book and make your own decision. Lots of great information about the game and very well written.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2024Do you have a NE Pats fan that lives in your home who eats, sleeps, and lives for the legacy of the Patriots? If yes, buy this book and be dad’s favorite. Despite the fact, the legacy landscape is in a pivot point, this book is one for history.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2017My main introduction to Bill Belichick came from the book "Patriot Reign" and I was just blown away by how great a coach he is. This edition explores the Coach and his QB Tom Brady and is a great read. I am a die hard Steelers fan (since I was 6 years old) but I have no trouble admitting this book is about the greatest coach and QB of all time.
This is a great read only brought down because the author had to cover the deflate gate non-sense. (He had to, it's part of the story) you did get to hear the patriot side of things which you didn't really hear while the controversy raged on.
This is a great read especially if you are a patriots fan but even if you're not.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2016Michael Holley has to be a lucky sports writer. He has enjoyed a box seat to one of America's greatest sports dynasties. He has not wasted the opportunity as his books are quite good.
For a first time reader this book is great. Compared to his others, this is a bit redundant.
Some day Holley should write the definitive account of this era in NE. Robert Kraft has hired only three coaches, Parcells, Carroll and Belichick. Brady and Belichick are quite a story, along with Halas-Luckman, Brown-Graham, Lombardi-Starr, Landry-Staubach, Walsh-Montana, Shula-Marino.
The story of how Kraft and Belichick have sustained success through so many Super Bowls is a journey in itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book .. for fans and haters alike. The planning and science behind the success
For a Pats fan this book is a true page turner. The author< Michael Holley, is also very straight forward about the legions of Pats haters and gives a fair account of why they are so rabid and where their rage fails to meet the test of facts and where the Belichik plays it close to the line. It's great to discover how this franchise was built beyond just Brady and Belichick (although those two are the perfect storm), and how the team is built around a player evaluation system built by Belichick. It's fascinating to discover how this system was inspired on a book written by his Dad, started with his days with the Browns and perfected with the Patriots. The player value system is based on versatile skills and financial considerations that rival the Billy Bean model. It shows us how one of the NFL's most successful franchise was built and continues to be run. The pairing of Brady and Belichick is undoubtedly the center piece, but Belichick built it to succeed beyond his tenure. The next book by Holey should be about Robert Kraft. That would be equally fascinating.
