PreS-Gr 1-Anja longs to be one of Santa's elves. Dressed in full Nordic regalia complete with red gnomic hat, she certainly looks the part. A thoughtful and helpful child, she acts the part as well. When she skis off in her quest to find Santa, a bird, horse, musk ox, polar bear, and reindeer show her the way. The full-page photographs look like they could be movie stills, so sharp and seamless are the figures that Anja and the animals cut against the winter landscape of Northern lights, glaciers, and snowy pine trees. While the scenes of Anja offering an apple to the reindeer or curled up next to the sleeping polar bear are whimsical and look unaltered, other images are obviously manipulated. Further, the story reads as if it were written around the pictures, rather than the other way around. Rosy-cheeked Anja lives in a wonderland. Her wish is to dash off to help Santa. But Anja, kind and considerate, thinks to help an elderly neighbor with chores before trusting the red cardinal that she CAN have her wish " when you have the right friends." And she does.
I want to be Anja ... to trust my friends and go on a glorious adventure in an extraordinary magical land. The land is of deep snow and giant mammals who hoist her on their strong backs to protect and guide her. Children will see trust and beauty and believing.
Per's photography is nothing short of spectacular. The subtlety of Anja's reflection in the eye of the loving horse as they depart is stunning. No detail is missed by Lori: the layers of warm, colorful clothing of Norway, antique wooden skis and pole AND Santa's got the best sleigh ever! Every object is lovingly placed on the window ledges or table to create the quiet of this snowland and the warm atmosphere in a cold land. And Anja? I want to be Anja.

There is one typo as someone pointed out, which is sad but easily overlooked considering the content. My teens sat down and read them while they were coming out of the box. LOL! My 15 year old son, who wouldn't be caught dead reading a children's book, looked at me and said, "Mom, these are awesome...wish I would have had these when I was a kid." Don't hesitate to purchase.

I was absolutely delighted to find this book. The photos are breathtaking and magical and we just happen to have a daughter named Anja. I was so pleased to be able to share this story with her and her brother this year. We buy a couple new Christmas books each year to add to our Christmas library and it was so wonderful to add this to our stories by the fire.

I do wish the story would have been a bit more substantial. Most of the story is about Anja's journey but almost nothing is written about what her job as one of Santa's elves involves. We would have loved to see Anja in action with Santa.

Still a truly lovely little treasure for our family. We bought many copies for gifts this year.
