Editorial Reviews

Review

"A wonderful book. When you travel across the United States, take this guide along with you."
Martha Stewart

"
Hamburger America is George Motz at his best. It's not a surprise that a new edition is mandatory reading for fans of the book and for a new generation of burger mavens who are new to the compendium. Where it all intersects is at the corner of Brilliant Boulevard and America's Favorite Food Street. The hamburger is America, and Motz is its most passionate and authoritative voice."―Andrew Zimmern, Host of Travel Channel's Bizarre Foods and The Zimmern List

"A fine overview of the best practitioners of the burger sciences."―
Anthony Bourdain

"Hamburger America" should be a staple in anyone's travel bag."―
Bobby Flay

"Just looking at this book makes me hungry, and reading George's stories will take you on the ultimate American road trip."―
Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor, New York City

"For me this is not just a book, it is more of a bible that I will use as my travel guide for many years to come, on my journeys around the globe in search for the best burgers on the planet. Thank you, George, for keeping these important cult-classic burger joints in the limelight-it's a true culture!"―
Richard Bergfors, aka "Burgerspotting" and CEO of Scandinavia's Max Premium Burgers

"George Motz is the Indiana Jones of hamburger archeology."―
David Page, creator of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives

"As a French Chef who took an unexpected approach to the American burger, I'm glad that George has put together this fantastic guide to 100 of the classics."―
Daniel Boulud

George Motz is a well-traveled Emmy award-winning freelance filmmaker, author and photographer. He has also been called the ‘foremost authority on hamburgers’ by The New York Times, and ‘America’s biggest burger name’ by Eater LA. In the spring of 2004 Motz completed Hamburger America, his second documentary film which he shot, produced, edited, and directed. The film was nominated in 2006 for a James Beard Award and in 2011 was recognized by the US National Archives as an integral part of American food history.  The film's success led to a state-by-state guide to hamburgers, also titled Hamburger America, a State-by-State Guide to Great Burger Joints. And in May 2023, Abrams Books released his fully revised and expanded cookbook, The Great American Burger Book, available at booksellers everywhere. George can be seen on his show Burger Scholar Sessions on Complex Media’s First We Feast and is set to open his first restaurant in New York City (Hamburger America) this summer.

A little sad the corner is beat up because this is for a Christmas gift but besides that it’s alright. The edges of the cover aren’t perfect either but the corner is the most noticeable damage

George Motz is so good at these books. Seeing the history of all these burger joints, finding unknown burger joints even near us, and figuring out what makes each special is so much fun. Anytime you travel you can look up if one of these joints is close on the way. Definitely worth the purchase.

I was looking forward to finally reading this and so glad I did. George Motz has become a food hero of mine with all the research and man hours he’s poured in to his works on the hamburger, between his books and documentary work. I love the way in Hamburger America he hilights so many classic yet previously not-well known places outside of their region with long, colorful histories.

The book provides the reader with good information about the subtle (and not so subtle) regional differences when it comes to making hamburgers while giving ample description of each individual place Motz has visited. Somehow he manages to give each their own unique description and avoids becoming too redundant, something that would be easy to do given that he is largely paying homage to only one menu item. The book never became boring and I looked forward to each section. It seems he writes just enough paragraphs about each place and sprinkles in just enough personal details to keep you interested without spending too much time on any one. In between the various state chapters are included some special side tips and explanations that add to the burger knowledge.

I’m looking forward to trying a lot of these great burger joints found in this book.

When first looking at Hamburger America I was expecting restaurant reviews and not much else; however, I’ve come to the conclusion that it is much more. Not only do you get top notch reviews from a burger expert but you get the extravagant history and rich culture surrounding each and every patty. It adds a unique and intriguing atmosphere to the restaurants if you decide to venture to one. The burgers themselves are top notch and I have faith that every time I try a place in this book I will be delighted with the sensation of taste in my mouth. Knowing the birth and background of each variation of the american classic makes it all the better. Speaking of variations, this book opened my eyes to the endless combinations and differences between regional burgers. What’s normal to burger consumers changes drastically depending on where you are in the united states.
Author George Motz is not without error though. Something that I was surprised to see is that there is not at least one burger for every state. I know that the state just might not have a top notch burger but I find it hard to believe that you can’t find at least one burger that is really good. I have this complaint as the book boasts “the burger guide for America” but doesn’t include all of America. One last complaint would be the explanations of taste. While the history of the restaurant is extensive, as well as how the burger is made differently from other places, the actually taste and texture that you find in most food reviews is lacking. However, it can be argued that the sense of mystery can be an incentive to try it for yourself.

No dislikes. Excited to receive this book because I like burgers and have eaten a lot of burgers over the years, I'm partial to thin patties though. Looking forward to reading this book and seeing where the best burgers are located.

I bought this book after watching The Burger Show on youtube (worth a watch)

It gives you an insight into the traditional burger joints across America and the more localised burger styles.

I admit it's probably a very niche subject but if burgers are your thing then this book will be too.
