Which came first? No words are necessary in this beautiful, artfully humorous book, in which every turn of the page offers a surprise.

Everyone knows that a tiny acorn grows into a mighty oak and a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. But in this clever, visually enchanting volume, it’s also true that a cow can result in both a bottle of milk and a painting of a cow, and an ape in a jungle may become an urban King Kong. Just as day turns into night and back again, a many-tiered cake is both created and eaten down to a single piece. With simple, graphic illustrations sure to appeal to even the youngest of children, this beautiful rumination on the passage of time will please the most discerning adult readers, too.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Crisply outlined digital images are tinted with muted pastels and splashed with warmer colors. Some are serious, others contain flashes of wit, and an air of scientific objectivity makes the humor even funnier. ... It’s a fascinating examination of the work that time does, and it offers new possibilities—and smiles —every time it’s read.
—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

A humorous, intriguing, fascinating, insightful look at the concept of before and after, including the small (such as the acorn and oak) to the more complex (the building of a city). Ramstein’s artwork has a fine-lined, almost Chris Ware–like sophistication, and the result will be readers, young and old, paging through the book multiple times, both for aha moments as well as hidden depths.
—Booklist

The clean, subdued-palette digital illustrations make the connections crystal clear as identical objects are copied and recolored. ... Like many wordless books, this one is not meant to be shared in silence. The comments and conversations it provokes are at least half the fun.
—The Horn Book

This harmonious album of clean-lined, very simple images in before-and-after pairs or short sequences practically compels viewers to ruminate about changes and seasons. ... Younger children will enjoy the mild challenge of figuring out the connections between, for instance, a slingshot and a broken window, a homing pigeon and an airmail envelope, a woolly sheep and (several steps and a knitted winter hat later) wood smoke drifting from a chimney in the snow. Peaceful, sometimes mildly humorous art provides gentle nudging toward a philosophical frame of mind.
—Kirkus Reviews

No words at all appear amid the stylish pictures and silent mirth of “Before After”... This chic volume invites children to make before-and-after connections between such things as a bean pod and a bar of chocolate, and a chicken and an egg.
—The Wall Street Journal

Here in careful, elegant matte illustrations, each one to a page, Anne-Margot Ramstein and Matthias Arégui invite children (and grown-ups) to see the before-and-after connections between such things as berries and a cup of tea, a rocking horse and a rocking chair, and, amusingly, an egg and a chicken, and a chicken and an egg.
—Wall Street Journal

This innovative picture book would be a great addition to the children’s section of a library or a classroom because of the critical thinking it can elicit.
—Library Media Connection (highly recommended)

A clever, wonderfully illustrated book.
—Good Housekeeping

This popular book of clean, elegant illustrations is simple enough for the youngest non-reader to follow (before: caterpillar, after: butterfly), but clever enough to engage older children as well (before: slingshot; after: broken window).
—Courier-Journal

Beautifully precise drawings... With 176 pages to pore over, this top-notch work won't leave grown-ups feeling shortchanged like many other picture books do.
—Chicago Tribune

Very disappointed..

Very disappointed..
This is the second copy of this NEW book I ordered because the first one had a peeling binding. I'm giving it as a gift and it didn't want it to look used. I have one from years ago that 2 of my kids have read and that one looks newer! Very disappointed... this one is also peeing!

Anne-Margot Ramstein and Matthias Aregui's picture book "Before After" could be a good choice for your non-reading toddler. Each set of facing pages features a pair of illustrations - one the "before" and one the "after".

The soft hues of the drawings that vary from those resembling primitive folk art to more highly detailed cityscapes and forest scenes make this book without words visually appealing. Understanding most of the "Before After" pairs is intuitive for adults, but little ones may have some difficulty understanding why a large monkey atop the Empire State Building is the after of that same animal in a jungle setting.

I like that "Before After" provides many different opportunities for discussing the relationship of the picture pairs with a child. The lack of words accompanying the pairs also provides ample opportunity for creative storytelling.

I liked that at least one of the pictures in the "Before After" pairs was something with which little ones may be familiar. Anne-Margot Ramstein and Matthias Aregui did an excellent job providing both a broad spectrum of categories and using variety in the types of pairs presented for comparison.

The one thing I did not care for was the size of the actual volume. Little ones require a book that is easy to hold and manipulate. They need a book that will lay flat when they open it to study the pairings. While the approximately 6 7/8" X 9 7/8" size of the book would have been ideal, the ¾" thickness of "Before After" does not allow the book to lay flat unless you crack the spine - something that should never be done.

If you are looking for a unique book for your child or grandchild, you will want to consider "Before After". It is a real treat!

Such a good book to encourage talking to a little one about changes. An object is clearly illustrated on one page, and on the next page the child will see how the object changes. It also illustrates landscapes and how they change with seasons, or day vs. night. Some things change over long periods of time (letters carried by pigeon vs. airmail, a building that deteriorates). The child sees changes in nature (a hive of bees and then a jar of honey; a lizard catches a fly), There are also some well-known story sequences that the child will remember (straw, stick, and brick houses and how they hold up; a pumpkin turns into a carriage). Foods are also illustrated with the product that they come from (coffee, chocolate). This is a thick book that is full of wonderful illustrations that will encourage vocabulary building. Wonderfully done!

As a home schooling mother of eight children, I've learned the value of a quality wordless book and this one is no exception. Beautifully illustrated and printed on a lovely matte finished paper, this well-bound book has quickly become a family favorite.

From a slingshot with a pile of rocks to a broken window or a nest full of eggs to a nest full of baby birds, Before After allows the pre-reader to "read" a story with little to no help. After going through this book WITH your child and discussing the befores and afters, your child will very quickly want to take over the "reading" part.

Not only do my youngest, nonreading children enjoy Before After, I often find my older readers going through it and many adults have been drawn to the illustrations. I'm glad I took a chance on Before After and see myself gifting this one again and again.

Such a clever and colorful book! We "read" it to both my 2 1/2 year old as well as our 3 month old. Since the images are so detailed there's lots to talk about and explore with our toddler; our infant loves the bright colors. Each page spread tells a story, with recurring themes throughout the book.Very nice printing quality as well.

A great approach for kids and adults as well. Words aren't needed to test one's understanding that an acorn gives rise to an oak tree or to question, "Does an egg come before a chicken? Or is the chicken required to make an egg?" This little book has multiple chances for children to show what they know and for adults to discuss these examples based on their life experiences.

I have bought multiple copies of this beautiful book for my kid and for gifts. It has no words, so they can just look at it. Or you can look at it with them and enjoy the cycle of birth, growth, decay, death, and rebirth, while they just look at the pretty pictures. Let them assign meaning to it or indoctrinate them with your a bleak world view hammered into us all through adulthood. Something for everyone!

Really great book that our 3.5 year old loves. No text - just lovely drawing and paintings on high quality paper. The concept is simple and is a great educational tool for young minds - each set of images comes in paired ideas - e.g. a bare tree in winter followed by the same tree in full summer bloom; an acorn versus on oak tree; daytime with a sun, night with a moon; deserts versus flood; volcanic landscape after an eruption followed by lush vegetation; cow and milk, etc. Hours of fun
