From Christian libertarian farmer Joel Salatin, a clarion call to readers to honor the animals and the land, and produce food based on spiritual principles.
What on earth is
The Marvelous Pigness of Pigs? It's an inspiring call to action for people of faith . . . a heartfelt plea to heed the Bible's guidance . . . .

It's an important and thought-provoking explanation of how by simply appreciating the marvelous pigness of pigs, we are celebrating the Glory of God.

As a man of deep faith and student of the Bible, and as a respected and successful ecological family farmer, Joel Salatin knows that God created heaven and earth and meant for all living organisms to be true to their nature and their endowed holy purpose. He intended for us to respect and care for His gift of creation, not to ravage and mistreat it for our own pleasure or wealth.

The example that inspires the book's title explains what Salatin means: when huge corporate farms confine pigs in cramped and dark pens, inject them with antibiotics and feed them herbicide-saturated food simply to increase profits, they are not respecting them as a creation of God or allowing them to express even their most rudimentary uniqueness - that special role that is part of His design. Every living organism has a God-given uniqueness to its life that must be honored and respected, and too often that is not happening today.

Salatin shows us the long overlooked ethics and instructions in the Bible for how to eat, how to shop, how to think about how we farm and feed the world. Through scripture and Biblical stories, he shows us why it's more vital than ever to look to the good book rather than corporate America when feeding the country and your family.

Salatin makes a compelling case for Christian stewardship of the earth and how it relates to every action we take regarding our food. He also opens our eyes to a common misconception many Christians may have about environmentalism: it's not a bad thing, and definitely not just the province of secular liberals; it's really a very good thing, part of heeding God's Word.

With warmth and with humor, but with no less piercing criticism of the industrial food complex, Salatin brings readers on a fascinating journey of farming, food and faith. Readers will not say grace over their plates the same way ever again.

About Joel

Joel F. Salatin (born 1957) is an American farmer, lecturer, and author whose books include You Can Farm and Salad Bar Beef.

Salatin raises livestock using holistic methods of animal husbandry, free of potentially harmful chemicals, on his Polyface Farm in Swoope, Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley. Meat from the farm is sold by direct-marketing to

consumers and restaurants.

In high school, Salatin began his own business selling rabbits, eggs, butter and chicken from his family farm at the Staunton Curb Market. He then attended Bob Jones University where he majored in English and was a student leader. He graduated in 1979. Salatin married his childhood sweetheart in 1980 and became a feature writer at the Staunton,

Virginia newspaper, The News Leader, where he had worked earlier typing obituaries and police reports.

Tired of “having his stories spiked,” he decided to try farming full-time after first getting involved in a walnut-buying station run by two high school boys. Salatin’s grandfather had been an avid gardener and beekeeper and a follower of J. I. Rodale, the founder of regenerative organic gardening. Salatin’s father worked as an accountant and his mother taught high school physical education. Salatin’s parents had bought the land that became Polyface after losing a farm in Venezuela to political turmoil. They had raised cattle using organic methods, but could not make a living at farming alone.

Salatin, a self-described “Christian-libertarian-environmentalist-capitalist-lunatic-Farmer” produces high-quality “beyond organic” meats, which are raised using environmentally responsible, ecologically beneficial, sustainable agriculture. Jo Robinson, the author of Pasture Perfect: The Far-Reaching Benefits of Choosing Meat, Eggs and Dairy Products From Grass-Fed Animals (2004) said of Salatin, “He’s not going back to the old model. There’s nothing in county extension or old-fashioned ag science that really informs him. He is just looking totally afresh at how to maximize production in an integrated system on a holistic farm. He’s just totally innovative.”

Salatin considers his farming a ministry, and he condemns the negative impact on his livelihood and lifestyle of what he considers an increasingly regulatory approach taken by the agencies of the United States government toward farming. Salatin now spends a hundred days a year lecturing at colleges and to environmental groups.

Wonderful Book
I have followed Joel for a long time, and have had this book sitting on my shelf for years, unread. Recently I began the process of starting a native plant business using regenerative practices and biblical techniques. A hard thing to do. I can relate so well with this book because I feel it in every day of my life. The people who care about being good stewards and are true believers in the gospel are few and far between. It can be a truly lonely place. I digress. Reading this book made me see that I am not alone in my beliefs. Thank you Joel for writing from your heart and finally “Coming out” 🙂

Joel Salatin is one of my favorite authors and he has truly outdone himself with this wonderful book! It's like he got inside my head and was able to express so many things I have been thinking about lately and put it on paper in such a clear way. As a Christian, I get very frustrated with "my people," who say they stand for the truth, yet refuse to believe actual truth when it's put in front of their faces, because it comes from someone they think is incapable of knowing truth ("creation worshippers," as Joel calls them). I know and have expressed frustration with countless Christians who eat horrible diets consisting mostly of "food-like substances" (as Michael Pollan calls it) and take tons of prescription drugs and blindly listen to whatever their doctors tell them, but then when they are faced with the consequences of their poor choices, then they ask for prayer for God to basically bless their mess and heal them! It took a great deal of courage for Joel to really call out "our people" on their hypocrisy and I hope he is prepared for the onslaught he will likely face for doing so. When he spoke about being able to relate to both creation worshippers and Creator worshippers, yet feeling at home with neither (or actually more at home with the creation worshippers), it was like someone really understood how I feel, as he's been "in the trenches" with this stuff much longer than I have. The blind support for allopathic medicine, the big food and Big Pharma systems without any question, while simultaneously ripping apart truly healthy eating, earth stewardship and natural medicine is mind-boggling and incredibly frustrating. The fact that they can go along just fine with the medical and food tyranny that is taking place in our country and then out of the other side of their mouths say they want smaller government and more liberty is just mind-numbingly hypocritical, or as Joel puts it, "intellectual schizophrenia (I love that!!)." I agree with Joel that there are no pastors that I know of (and I know some rather courageous ones) who will tackle these topics and that is just so sad and unfortunate. I truly hope some of them will read Joel's book and wake up and start talking about this like it needs to be talked about. You do not have to be a Christian to appreciate this book, by the way. I know people who are polar opposite of my spiritual beliefs who would read this and appreciate and respect what Joel is saying here and as always, he says it with such eloquence and humor. I loved this book and not only will I recommend it to friends, family, co-workers, etc., but I will be sending a copy to my pastor! He is incredibly courageous and he just might speak up after reading it (at least I truly hope he will).

Joel outlines a doable path toward healthy soil that leads to healthy plants that leads to a healthy environment and healthy food for humans and animals creating an almost paradise on earth. He is doing it on his farm. Everybody wins. There are no “cons” with this type of agriculture. So exciting.

The book quality is excellent. A great topic for christians especially Christian homesteaders! However my only complaint is that Amazon did not do a good job warehousing the book. They also pawned a very used book off as new. That was really disappointing. See the video for damage. I also forgot to mention the sharpie pen mark on the bottom of the book.

I love this book for many reasons. First of all, it is the correct response to God's instructions for being good stewards of the earth. Secondly, it builds bridges between us and the secular mindset of those who worship creation that we might have authenticity and integrity in directing them to the Creator. It also challenges the reader to care about the food we purchase and consume and that God cares about this as well. It brings into focus the conditions of animals in factory farming and teaches us that caring for them and fighting against their deplorable conditions by not patronizing their manufacturers is necessary to make a difference in the future. God cares about the tiny sparrow who falls, so He certainly cares about every pig and chicken and cow. It's not about elevating the animals and plants above humanity, but about caring for them as God does. It's about caring about the food we eat and the way it is grown and how it is adulterated in commercial farming, because if we don't start caring about it now, our descendants will be in great jeopardy. And finally, taking a right-to-life stance means caring about unborn humans as well as all life, plants and animals. While it may sound contradictory from a world view, it's not contradictory to a Word view. Joel Salatan makes good sense with a wonderful sense of humor mixed with humility and kindness. I recommend this book to every Christian and to those who have not yet accepted Christ because everyone across the spectrum can get a healthy and accurate perspective and understanding of God's character from Bible times through the present in reading it.

The Marvelous Pigness of Pigs by Joel Salatin is a book written by a Christian farmer for Christians. While he uses scripture to implore those who are supposed to be Christ like to care for the earth, the truth of his farming principals hold firm for every human worldwide. And the message is clear for not only those who farm, but those who eat food. So we ALL must listen to the many Joel Salatin’s of the world and make lasting changes that will impact future generations for the better instead of continuing on a destructive path that leaves a dying earth home to sick people. It isn’t honoring, it isn’t funny, and we don’t have a right to rape, pillage and destroy. We have an obligation to be good stewards. No matter who you pray to, or if you abhor prayer, the weight of the obligation is still on your shoulders. John Taylor’s Arator written in 1818 states, “If we suck our mother to death we must die ourselves.” Joel Salatin uses The Marvelous Pigness of Pigs to express how we can nurture our mother so that we may live.

I didn't realised this was THE book in which Joel was talking about his religious views. But even as an atheist, I loved it. It explains his drive to do the things he do how he does them, and even it would be better in the hands of an american evangelist, as to the impact this could have and the intent behind it, and even if it took me a while, i read it ans to me this is a highly interesting book. It talks about the state of agriculture and food production in the US, about the agribusiness, about philosophy, about chicken, pigs and soil. If you are christian, if you want to grow, if you eat food, or if you dream of a farm, this is still an excellent book to go through. I guess I'll have even more personal interest in his other books, but I'm keeping this one on the shelve and don't regret buying it.

Salatin has very important things to say, especially to evangelical christians. I agree with his stance that we humans were given dominion over creation in the sense of stewardship - that is, care and protection of nature - and not in the sense that we can abuse nature if we so wish. As to the title, only one chapter is devoted to pigs, although the whole book deals with respecting nature. One thing I found very interesting in the book was his description of how his father restored the eroded and degraded land on the farm he bought.
