Manheim Township, PA, was rocked by a seemingly random triple-homicide during the summer of 2007. There were no witnesses, very few leads and no solid suspects. As days turned into weeks and the crime remained unsolved, the small-town neighborhood was filled with sadness, questions, and a growing sense of fear. One month after the murders, Tim Kreider’s son Alec was committed to a mental health hospital. One of Alec’s best friends had been one of the murder victims, and Tim feared that the loss had pushed his long-troubled son over the edge. Tim didn’t realize that his world was about to come crashing down around him. Refuse to Drown is the true story of a father’s despair and the type of perseverance that can lead to hope and healing.

“Refuse to Drown” by Tim Kreider is a difficult book to read. It’s not the writing, which is simple, straightforward, and compelling. It’s the story that Kreider has to tell.

Krieder’s son Alec, at 16, murdered a close friend and his friend’s parents by stabbing them to death. The friend’s sister, home early from college, escaped unharmed, likely because Alec didn’t realize she was asleep in the house.

For several weeks afterward the killings, no one knew who the murderer was. Funerals were held; Alec attended his friend’s service. People in this Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, town locked doors and looked over their shoulders.

The murders and the investigation unfold over a few short weeks. Police hit a dead-end. It looks as if the truth will never be known.

And then Alec tells a friend on the phone that he’s considering killing himself. His divorced parents intervene. He’s sent to a state institution for evaluation. It is there, during a visit by his parents, that he confesses to the murders. The institution can’t legally inform the police. Alec himself isn’t likely to. It falls to his parents, and especially his father, to decide what to do next.

It may seem like an obvious decision. But it wasn’t. You have a child you is clearly mentally ill. He’s committed a terrible crime. His siblings, parents, extended family, and friends will face consequences of their own. Alec himself hopes nothing has to be reported to the police.

Tim Kreider does what he knows he has to do. He knows the odds are better than good that his son may have to spend the rest of life in prison. But he also knows how a family was destroyed and crimes committed, at the hands of his own son.

This isn’t every parent’s worst nightmare, but it became the Kreider family’s worst nightmare. Most of us will never have to deal with what Kreider and his family had to deal with –comprehending what happened, the arrest, the trial and sentencing. And most of us will never experience what the victims’ family had to experience – the horror, the loss, the lives changed irrevocably and forever. It’s a story filled with shock, disbelief, and tears.

No one “wins” in “Refuse to Drown.” But it ultimately becomes a story about faith, about realizing that there is much in this life we simply can’t control, about understanding that doing the right thing is often doing the hard thing, like turning over a child you love to the judicial authorities, and likely forever.

It’s a hard book to read. But I’m glad I did.

As the headline says, the story in this book is true, and involves the commission of a crime, but it is not a "true crime" book such as Ann Rule writes. If you're looking for crime scene photos and forensic analysis, please look elsewhere. (Not disrespecting Ms. Rule. I read her a lot, actually. This is just something very different from that.)

I live very close to where Mr. Kreider's son made the inexplicable decision to turn his rage outward. I mean by that simply that psychologists can explain, in general, why some people turn their pressures on others, but that we will never truly know what happened in Alex's mind on the night of the crime. It is possible that he himself doesn't know. I should also disclose that I know the co-author, Shawn Smucker, and have communicated very briefly with Mr. Kreider via social media. The courthouse in the book is the one where my divorce hearing would have taken place, had the lawyers not settled out of court.

However, that's not why I'm five-starring this book. (If there were half-stars, I might deduct half because there are a few places where the writing becomes a bit stiff or simplistic, but that's an inherent difficulty in co-authoring.) I found the book extremely moving because it is about a choice that seems simple but really wasn't, because human instinct was pulling so strongly on one side. Parents - the ones worthy of the title - will always fight to protect their offspring. Kreider tells the reader, in just enough detail to be emotionally understandable to non-parents, what it was like making the decision to turn away from that instinct and go to the police with information that would put his son in the hands of the legal system. In doing so, he rips the lid off what curiosity-seekers might be tempted to probe, and takes what I hope is a large step toward destigmatizing mental illness. It's incredibly hard for people with such illnesses to seek help in our culture, and it seems it is more so for boys and men. No one can say whether Alex would have chosen a different path if he had had psychiatric treatment in greater depth earlier in life. But if a parent is moved by this book to make that treatment open, without judgment, to their own sons, maybe a tragedy like the one in this book can be prevented -- or a young man can simply live a less burdened life, which is a worthy goal in itself.

Kreider also admirably avoids blaming his ex-wife in any way (indeed, she is barely mentioned, perhaps by her own request). While this leaves some gaps here and there in the narrative, it might have been tempting at some point to ask why she didn't "see it coming" or what have you. At least in print, Kreider avoids casting blame on Alex's mother, and shoulders it all himself. While the latter isn't necessarily rational either, it avoids invading the privacy of a woman who is certainly grieving deeply in her own way, and at her own pace. Kreider thanks -- quite a few people -- rather than blaming, and I applaud that.

Kreider also freely discusses the role of his Christian church in his refusal to "drown" in pain. Here, some authors might well have proselytized for their brand of spirituality. As someone of a different religion, I was, frankly, pleasantly surprised by the way the authors didn't go there, and instead advocate only the path of survival by whatever means will help. Kreider's girlfriend and other friends are portrayed as having provided terrific support at every turn. If anything is being suggested to the reader here, it is allowing oneself to lean on whatever social network is available.

Generally, I applaud the book's honesty, generosity, humility, and forbearance in telling what could have been a deeply invasive story. I wanted to know whether the lone survivor of the crime was similarly keeping their own head above water, but ultimately I think the decision to avoid speculation in that matter was the best one in a literary sense as well -- keeping the focus on Kreider and how he worked to do the right thing, and then survive having done so.

Being from Lancaster Co I had zero desire to read this book before hearing Tim on a local radio program. It was well written and ripped at the heart, but was full of hope. Near the end I started to fade, but overall, very pleased.

The book, Refuse to Drown, is a true story of Alec Kreider, a 16-year old who murdered 3 people in one family in 2007. The youngest murder victim was his best friend, Kevin Haines. The book was written by Tim Kreider, Alec's dad. I have often wondered how people move on after a life-changing event occurs and this book tells just that. I am an avid true-crime reader and that is what prompted me to buy this book. But this book is really about healing and moving on with your life. I would recommend this concise and interesting book to anyone who may be in crisis or contemplating suicide. Good luck to the Kreider family. I especially hope that Amy and Drew are doing well and have been able to reconnect with their dad. We, as parents, try our best and I am sure that Tim Kreider has done that. I also read the book about Alec Kreider by Michael Cuneo and realize that Tim Kreider did downplay the murders that his son committed. It was a horrendous crime and the Cuneo book would provide the reader with a more graphic description of the crime and make you more inclined to be less forgiving of the murderer.

Honestly one of the worst books i have read in the true crime genre. I had high hopes for this book, based on ratings, but it was poorly written and provided less insights than a newspaoer article It was almost entirely about the father and his thoughts and emotions on a highly superficial level. There was almost no detail about the crime itself, the motive or their relationship.

I was left knowing more about who sat where in certain conversations and what passage his pastor read in church, than anything I was actually interested in. Dont waste your time or money.
