- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2024Beautiful presentation by Dark Horse, a reprinting with all sorts of goodies. 8.5 x11 and 350 + pages with notes by Moebius and his Biography & photo in the back. Stunning doesn't quite cover it but will just have to do. The World of Edena is just that. Fantastic illustrations of fantastic places. Great value and great story, written and illustrated by Moebius.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2017This is a collection of the stories that form Jean "Moebius" Giraud's Edena (or Aedena) epic - really the adventures of interstellar mechanic Stel, as it kicks off with "Repairs," a psy-fi short unconnected to "Upon a Star," the one-off commission for Citroen that wound up becoming the beginning of the epic. Some time after the private publication of Upon a Star, Giraud decided to develop it into a kind of extended parable inspired by the ideas of his guru, Jean-Paul Appel-Guéry. Despite a New Age/Back To Eden orientation the stories have moments of the kind of off-the-wall and satirical situations for which Giraud was famous.
I got the hardbound, which has an integral cover (i.e no dust cover): all the art is beautifully reproduced and there are a couple "extras" - short comments by Giraud that introduce the work and preface each chapter (note that these are mostly different comments from those he provided for previous publications.) A one-page biography of Giraud and a select bibliography end the volume.
Stel is a pilot and mechanic from an advanced civilization who is supposed to be travelling to a "Jalopy" show on a distant planet with his partner Atan. Affected by a mysterious force, Stel discovers that apparently he alone can activate an ancient technology that transports him, together with Atan, to the legendary planet Edena, a supernatural paradise. Disconnected from their artificial life support systems, the pair develop into man and woman, whose natural physiology and impulses dismay Atan, the female. There is a more mystic aspect to the situation, however, as in a significant dream Stel meets the mysterious psychopomp Master Burg and is attacked by an evil entity. Atan flees from Stel and the separated pair experience symbolic adventures in which they must deal with the artificial civilization that the evil entity has created. Submerged in a dream state by the entity, Stel struggles to be united with Atan, but can he succeed in reality?
I like this series a little better than the "Incal" series Giraud did with Alexandro Jodorowsky; the latter is pretty heavy-handed at times and the New-Age stuff seems trite. Nevertheless the Edena stories are solidly in the same general mold - nature is good, society is corrupt, citizens are sheep, etc. The dark ironies of Arzach and surreality of The Airtight Garage aren't much in evidence, but there is some pointed social satire. The artwork is great, Giraud at the height of his powers.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2016If I was going to pick a single selection that embodies the essence of Moebius as an artist, the Edena story would be it, yet surprisingly, this epic is not all that well known compared to many of Moebius's other works, which makes me curious how much of this story was ever published in the popular French SF magazine Metal Hurlant (Heavy Metal in the U.S.) where most of his work was popularized. I do know that several of these chapters were published separately in the old Epic Comics graphic novels, but because they were spread out and not being finished at that time, the Edena story didn't have the recognition or sales numbers like that of the Jodorowsky, O'Bannon, and other more straight forward SF stories that Moebius was involved with. In fact, it would still be another two decades before we would have the complete Edena story that we have today.
Moebius is much more of an artist than he is an author, yet all of Moebius' works have a transcendent quality to them, where every image and panel feels to tell a story within story, and this leads to something that is more enlightening than anything the written narrative could possibly offer. This is the unique appeal of Moebius as an artist. He has a natural and organic ability to infuse his imagery with a sense of a larger utopian world. I know that sounds a bit flowery, but true nonetheless. And this infusion is not a superficial technique either. Moebius isn't really the kind of artist who predetermines different techniques and styles depending on the story. To me his stories always have an easily identifiable core that IS Moebius (the only exception being perhaps his earliest Blueberry western stories to some degree).
As for the plot of Edena, I would describe it as a space fantasy with strong new-age undercurrents. The story revolves around two characters, Stel and Atan, who land on a basically unexplored planet in order to investigate what happened to a lost space station. What starts as something of a technical investigation turns immediately into an exploration of a mythical and surreal existence that permeates the planet. Stel and Atan are led through a process of self discovery as we see the artificial and non-natural aspects of their former lives being discarded through interactions with various creatures and peoples accompanied by abstract revelatory experiences. The narrative has a tendency to offer up questions which are not explicitly be answered, yet it has a beautiful and simple sincerity to it, and leads you to give your own interpretation. In fact I appreciate the portions of the story that are more open-ended and loosely structured than compared to when Moebius tries to offer up technical explanations that only seem to weigh the story down with perfunctory jargon. I enjoy Moebius' abstract portions and stories in a much different way than his linear stories such as "The Incal" and other Alexandro Jodorowsky stories that sometimes feel a bit mechanical. In some ways Edena could be compared to Moebius's "Airtight Garage" or even "Arzach" in that all of these stories are less traditional in structure and more open to interpretation.
I would also mention that I really enjoy the late 70s/early 80s utopianistic fantasy elements. It's quite wonderful here, and a breath of fresh air. Moebius' art is always the key to any story he is attached to, and that is certainly the key here. Edena is often very idyllic, often surreal and meditative in nature. It's certainly one of Moebius less masculine stories in the best possible way.
