I got this for a loved one who lost her dad rather suddenly. They had a complicated relationship and understandably her grief is complicated. Upon initial read through of the cards, I had strong reactions to some of the text, thinking it was not healing or accepting. One of them is the card that gives the "everything happens for a reason" statement because I admittedly -hate- that statement. Reading through them again today to take photos for the review, I do find them to be mostly comforting and helpful. I was going to return this deck but I might actually end up giving it to her along with the journal I bought so she can write down thoughts/feelings she has with the cards. They come in three sections, which you can see in the photos. I included samples of each section to hopefully help people make a decision on whether this would be something helpful for you or for someone you know. If you are dealing with grief, I hope you are able to journey through it with loved ones around you and supporting you. You are not alone.

As a Professional Bereavement Coordinator, I used this tool in a recent Grief support group. It provided excellent discussion with the group, and the provision for education on Grief Process. What I appreciated the most was holding to the present day understanding that the grief process is individual. Each person’s process is their own, and the timing is their own. The 3 categories of cards: Understanding your Grief, and Healing enables each person to find messages that resonate with them on any particular day, and also realize that their responses will likely be different from one day to the next. I loved this enough that I purchased a deck for several people who I knew were dealing with grief.

When someone dear to us loses a spouse, of course we grieve too. We will send flowers or a nice card, but after those first few weeks, the flowers are wilted, the calls have slowed down, and the true reality sets in. I wanted to give my friend something that would continue to provide comfort long after those first weeks. Books are great, but when your heart is broken, and your life is forever changed, a "self help" book can be just too overwhelming. These cards are wonderful in that they have powerful and comforting messages, you can work your way through them at your own pace, or hang out to one that comforts you, until you are ready to move on. I just feel these cards are truly the "gift that goes on giving"!

David Kessler is a renowned writer and therapist in the field of dealing with grief. Full disclosure, I know David and he is a friend. My mother and my former business partner and good friend died within two weeks of each other. I felt alternately overwhelmed and numbed. Where these cards were helpful is that in the aftermath of these losses they offered a "doable" alternative to group therapy, reading a long book, or following some "staged" plan...none of which seemed possible at the time. I could instead come at my grief in kind of strafing runs. This was all I felt capable of doing. I would pull one card a day and spend some time breathing and reflecting on the thought and meaning of that one card. I'd let that sink in and take effect. Then pull another when ready, perhaps the next day. The effect was cumulative and healing. That's not to say this process is right for everyone, because each person grieves differently. But if feeling "overwhelmed" is one of your reactions to loss, and yet you would like some concrete advice on how to heal, then this card deck offers a gentle and effective help during this painful time to be taken in as you can.
