DRAWING FROM LIFE

DRAWING FROM LIFE

Having models pose for you as you draw is an excellent way to practice rendering faces. When drawing from life, you usually have control over the way your models are lit. If you’re indoors, you can position the light source to your liking; if you’re outdoors, you can reposition your model until you’re satisfied.

Developing Hair

DEVELOPING HAIR

Because hair is often one of an individual’s most distinguishing features, knowing how to render different types and textures is essential. When drawing hair, don’t try to draw every strand; just create the overall\ impression and allow the viewer’s imagination to fill in the rest.

DEPICTING AGE

DEPICTING AGE

As people age, their skin loses elasticity, causing loose, wrinkled skin; drooping noses; and sagging ears. In addition, lips often become thinner, hair turns gray, and eyesight becomes poor. Accurately rendering these characteristics is essential to creating successful portraits of mature subjects.

ESTABLISHING VALUES

ESTABLISHING VALUES

When shading a portrait, vary the direction of your pencil strokes to follow the shapes of the different planes of the face. Darken shadowed areas and leave highlights light to make the face appear three-dimensional.

This is the core information that artists need to evolve. Great content. Can’t wait to practice and freshen up as a long time artist. And recommend artists who are coming up to commit to books like these and study! Nothing wrong with studying even if you feel like you’re already good at something!

Got this for my son, he learned a lot, well done!
  • Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2018
My 20 year old step daughter has been in a program for several months and asked me if I could get her some art supplies to help her pass the down time she has. I tried to focus on things that would be of a relaxing nature and/or help her express herself and/or help her find hobbies that she loves enough to carry on with once she's back out in the world so that she has positive things to focus on (possibly things she could turn into a career, as well).
    I did a ridiculous amount of research to find the right drawing book for her and after reading the reviews and the description of this one I was sold! Besides all of the awesome reviews, there's two other details that made this one the winner;
    1. The price (but, of course~lol).
    2. More bang for your 💵.
It teaches you about 2 different mediums (painting and drawing) so since it was important for me to get as many quality products as I could for as little $$ as possible, I couldn't go wrong 👍😁.
I do regret that I didn't have the opportunity to check it out prior to sending it to her (for my own curiosity and so I could give an informative review). Her box of supplies (and a few other miscellaneous items) had been collecting dust on my livingroom floor for months and I didn't want her to have to wait any longer (and I was tired of 👀 at it~lol). After I placed the order for the book I had to wait a pretty lengthy amount of time for it to arrive and although I was informed of this (and accepted it), I had to knock off one ⭐ for it's 🐌 paced arrival.

I bought this book for my mother who recently got into sketching in her free time. She had practiced before and is pretty good but this book really helped guide her to get the results she wanted for sketching faces. I can see the progression in her work. She loves this book and let me know it was one of her favorite gifts she received for her birthday.

I bought this as a gift for a nine year old niece who loves to draw. This is great for her but I expected it to be a normal 8.5"x11" sized book.
Its more like 11"x17" though. Sort of difficult for her carry around in a backpack and other bags. Size doesn't make sense.

This book is amazing. All I need to know. Proportions, features, shading, and most of all teaches all different ages of subjects from babies to the elderly. After buying 8 or more drawing books I could have bought just this one and have learned all I need to know for sketching faces and features. I could not put it down the first day I received it. I am over the moon at finding this book. love it love it love it.
It made my day. shows how to measure for every scenario I will ever need. Thankyou for publishing all the facts in one book. Claire S.
