You are Not an Otter: The Story of How Kids Become Adventurous Eaters Paperback – October 13, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
You are Not an Otter takes children on a food adventure, exploring all the ways that animals eat! Otters carry a favorite rock under their arms for cracking open clams, flamingos dip and drizzle water as they stand on one foot, and gorillas travel in troops to dine together in the jungle. Do YOU carry a rock, dip and drizzle or gather in the jungle to eat with your family? No, you are not an otter, nor a flamingo and most definitely not a gorilla. But there is one thing you can do that other creatures can’t. Find out what makes children so special in this creative book on how kids learn to become adventurous eaters.
Parents will benefit from the expert tips on how to encourage children to try new foods and the importance of pretend play in early childhood. Written by the award-winning author, Melanie Potock, with whimsical illustrations from StacyMooreStudios.com, You are Not an Otter will turn even the pickiest eaters into food explorers! Professional tips from pediatric feeding expert Melanie Potock, MA, CCC-SLP include how to:
- Use pretend-play to encourage kids to try new foods
- Teach kids to be ok if something doesn’t taste good, at first!
- Spark conversations about healthy eating
- Help kids come to the table hungry and ready to try new foods
- Encourage kids to eat mindfully

- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2019I am a speech-language pathologist working in pediatric feeding and swallowing and Melanie's parent-focused books are a go to in my practice so I was eager to add her new children's book to my collection. It did not disappoint. I love her use of repetitive sentence structure and questions that are so helpful in engaging young readers with the text. Great for starting a conversation with kids about the different ways we interact with with our food with extra tips for parents at the back. I recommend this book (as well as Melanie's other books) for parents helping their kids down the path of adventurous eating. And I also LOVE that she included a user of a speech generating device as one of the adventurous kids depicted in the adorable illustrations. Many of the kids I work with don't see characters who communicate like themselves in children's literature and I love seeing them represented.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2019I love EVERYTHING about this book! My 2-year-old got it from Santa (haha in part because his OT/feeding therapist mama really wanted it!) and it’s been the immediate book of choice before naps and bedtime for the past 4 days! I read it with my 2,4, and 7 year olds and they are all engaged and love the illustrations. They love finding the munch bug on each page and it’s sparked discussion about eating and cooking and even the sweet girl with the talker on the parrot pages. Can’t wait to share it with my Food Explorers Groups at the preschool I work at if I can sneak it off of my son’s bookshelf. 😉 Highly recommend this book for all feeding therapists and parents!!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2020As a feeding specialist, I am always looking for books to incorporate into my sessions. This book has been a fun and fabulous addition! The kids love the whimsical illustrations and I love giving parents the language to use at home. One of my favorites is "You are not a grazer." I have also given this book as a "graduation gift" from feeding therapy to celebrate adventurous eating and carry on the fun at home. But, this book is not just for "picky eaters." I highly recommend it and am loving using it on a weekly basis!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2020Did you know that koala bears choose just one type of eucalyptus to eat, that single leaf variety sustaining them for life? I didn't, and neither did my 6-year old, until we read this sweet book. Filled with fascinating tidbits about the animal kingdom (not least us), You Are Not an Otter is truly delightful for children and parents/caregivers alike. The prose flows and contains a perfect amount of predictable questions that invite children to cheerfully respond. Throughout, healthy habits are reinforced in the loveliest way.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2020Super cute pictures and story. My 2yr old son loves for me to read it while he eats and at bedtime. I enjoy reading it as well. I’m not sure it has helped him to eat better but it’s fun to read anyway. Maybe when he’s older he’ll understand it better.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2019I was so excited to get this book! Melanie Potock has done an excellent job creating a story that encourages conversation about being an adventurous eater. What a great story for feeding therapists and family members to use with their kids!! Melanie Potock knocked it out of the park with this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Didn’t work for us
I spent a long time trying to decide whether to buy this or not. It’s expensive. But as my child became more particular with their eating I decided to bite the bullet.
It didn’t work for us. It didn’t interest him, and he showed no more interest in food items. It wasn’t worth the money in my opinion.
