I’ve been writing since I was a teenager, which is now a distressingly long time ago! I started out as an entertainment journalist – actually, my earliest published work was as a reviewer of science fiction and fantasy books. I went on to become a staff writer and then an editor for print magazines, before beginning to write non-fiction making-of books tied in to film and television, such as The Art and Making of Penny Dreadful and Wonder Woman: The Art and Making of the Film.

I now write both children’s and adult fiction - my first novel was called The Diamond Thief, a Victorian-set steampunk adventure book for the middle grade age group. That won the Redbridge Children’s prize in 2014, and I went on to write two more books in the series before moving on to other adventure books including The Golden Butterfly, which was nominated for the Carnegie Award in 2017, The House of Hidden Wonders, and a YA horror called FIR, which was shortlisted for the Lancashire Book of the Year Award in 2018. My last children's book (to date) is called The Extraordinary Voyage of Katy Willacott, and was published by Little Tiger in 2023.

My debut adult novel, The House Beneath the Cliffs, was published by Simon & Schuster in August 2021. Since then I've written three more: The Lighthouse Bookshop, The Forgotten Garden, and The Secret Orchard, which is out in September 2024. My adult fiction tends to centre on small communities – feel-good tales about how we find where we belong in life and what it means when we do. Although I have also published full-on adult horror stories, which are less about community and more about terror and mayhem…

I was born in Kent but now live in a very small house in an equally small village in northern Cumbria with my husband, who owns a bookshop in the nearby market town of Penrith.

A real return to Themyscira and Wonder Woman
5 out of 5 stars
A real return to Themyscira and Wonder Woman
"Wonder Woman, the art and making of the film" successfully understands the essence of Diana's compassion and heroism as carried forward through the comics and into the success of the first film [2017] about Wonder Woman. This book is a keeper. You can keep returning to the Amazon Island by just opening the book and enjoying how amazingly it was realized in the film. The attention to details and nuances of Wonder Woman and the Amazon's character as brought to life in this book is a real return to Themyscira.

Ordered on 6/6/2017. Arrived early on 6/12/2017, two days ahead of projected delivery date. So that counts for great service. Colorful images from concepts, costumes, props, set designs, etc. Plus a bonus item in the form of an enclosed Wayne Enterprises envelope. That made a perfect touch. Basically gives the behind the scenes look on the production approach and thought process on the film. Great art book and an ideal collectors item for all fans of comic books, comic book movies, DC, and of course Wonder Woman herself.

Great reference book filled with photographs and conceptual art digital paintings. A treasure trove of imagery for WW and Amazonian culture. I really like that they have combined the art content with the making of the movie in a single book unlike other properties where they split it into multiple volumes. Since my copy arrived with a smashed corner, I feel they should be either protected with a slipcase as a standard edition or padded much better when packaged for delivery. Still the content is flawless, so it deserves its 5 star rating for an art reference book or film fan book.

I love the 'art of' film books. Concept art & the behind the scenes process is fascinating to me. I got this book as a gift for my sister and she loves it! It's one of her 'coffee table' books and people always flip through it and love looking at it. Makes a wonderful gift for Wonder Woman fans.

It's a pretty basic coverage of the art and making of the film - if you're an industry person it's pretty basic. If you're a fan of the film and want to ogle over stills and see a little bit of the 'behind the scenes' is pretty good.
Would have preferred a lot more detail in text and in images. Like who was the illustrator of the painting / story of the Gods and Amazon birth/journey. It's a 2 page spread and nice to gaze at but deserved some detail like who painted it, why is was styled like classic canvases of the post-renaissance, the technique of multiple stories on one canvas etc.
The last page (back cover) was the best surprise ever! Loved that little extra.

5.0 out of 5 stars Libro de arte de Wonder Woman
Reviewed in Spain on February 4, 2021

The quality of the book is insane. It does not come in a slipbox, but overall, I like the feel of the book. The details of the content and the concept arts and photographs are very cool, and the negative film on the inner back cover was a wonderful surprise. One of the best DC cinematic universe art books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Splendide!
Reviewed in France on January 6, 2018

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent homage to the iconic character
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 16, 2018
If you’ve seen the film, you might want to own this book. If you haven’t seen the film, this tells you a great deal – through pictures and words! – about the film without providing too many spoilers. Certainly, we could have done with more text (though what is there is enlightening), but it's clear that the writer and company have gone for the credo 'a picture is worth a thousand words' - and it works well enough.

The layout is broken down into various parts: Themyscira features short chapters on the design of the island, the armoury, the characters, the weapons and the exciting beach battle – all enhanced with anecdotes from the production team and artwork and stills. The Journey is a brief account of Diana’s departure from the island and the construction of the boat – a vessel that never in fact touched water, thanks to CGI wizardry. The final part is Man’s World with chapters about London recreated in 1918, Etta Candy, Steve Trevor, the villains, and the trench warfare, again enhanced with illustrations and movie stills.

Reading this book it’s obvious that Director Patty Jenkins found the film a labour of love, as did so many others involved. The palettes of colour were deliberately chosen – the bright shades for the Themyscira section, the sombre leached shades of Man’s World at war.

Like the film itself, this book is an excellent homage to the icon created in 1941, Wonder Woman.
