This is powerful writing. Enjoy it."--Thomas Hauser, Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award nominee

"Carlos Acevedo is the most original, perceptive, and best new writer in boxing. Sporting Blood is a vivid and gripping collection."--Donald McRae, writer for The Guardian and award-winning author of over twelve books

"Acevdo is a sensationally good writer with some brilliantly memorable turns of phrase. Each essay packs a mighty punch and resonated with me long after I read it. It is a great collection to dip in and out of, to take your time over, to re-read and savour the writing and the imagery."--All Sports Books Reviews

"Carlos Acevedo's book of essays...finds a balance between the familiar and the less so for a read that goes by quickly and feels over too soon. Acevedo... gets to show off the range of his talent in this collection, applying varying stylistic flourishes to each subject approached. --Cliff Rold, Boxing Scene

"Carlos Acevedo understands the sweet science. Just as a DJ knows how to keep the dance floor populated with bodies, Acevedo knows how to string words together to keep a reader turning pages deep into the night...Like a forensic psychologist profiling a deep psychological mystery, Acevedo explores the psyches of each boxer in these essays with deftness and compassion...This book is recommended for high school, public, and academic libraries."--Gavin J. This isn't just superb sportswriting--it's superb writing fullstop. Boxing aficionados need no introduction to Carlos Acevedo. For the layman who is a serious reader, who appreciates the craft of writing, you are in for a treat. Acevedo's unerring perspicacity, sharp metaphors and dynamic diction are next level... I would be hardpressed to find non-fiction writing in any subject today that is more artful and mature than what Acevedo has achieved here with Sporting Blood. Read it and be enriched!

No one can tell these rich, dark stories quite like Carlos Acevedo. The subject list here is unique and the tales new and fresh - on a subject matter dripping with intrigue. You don’t have to be a fan of the sweet science to want to digest more and more of Carlos’ tales.

Been a boxing fan for over 30 yrs. & grew up reading all the relevant mags/books. But over the past 15 odd years, like most, have gotten the majority of my boxing fix from the internet. I’ve read more than a few of Acevedo’s articles, and have been impressed with his boxing knowledge & writing style. He knows how to tell a story & doesn’t write the typical generic internet article.

The book is a multitude of stories on all levels of fighters. It’s a tough sport fought by tough men and most had tough lives. For a boxer, living happily ever after is the exception, not the rule. I highly recommend this superbly written, and hard to put down, book to any fight fan.

It was disturbing that Acevedo dwelled on the dysfunctional aspects of the fighters he chose to present to us. Drugs, alcoholism, and criminality were in abundant display. Surely there were positive vibes these warriors projected. Yet he was true to the title of this book. Have a dictionary next to you at all times. The author uses a plethora of SAT test worthy vocabulary words. Looking them up ruined the continuity of Acevedo’s work for me. He may have been trying to impress himself more than impress his readers. I did revel in the nostalgia the names of the pugilists in this era generated.

I connected immediately with the tight format and Acevedo's historian's eye and style. The boxer's stories captivated me so much I never read more than three in a row, preferring to give myself processing and reflection time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good collection of pieces

Carlos Acevedo is a very good writer who provides a collection of articles that he has written on various boxers.

The articles are not hugely long but provide more than enough information to give us a look at the fighter and their issues. The writing is first class, very easy to understand and written to a high level.

I will admit that some of the characters spotlighted have been done so often that one is just treading over well-trodden ground when dealing with them eg Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali and Jack Johnson but this would be a criticism made by hardcore boxing readers like myself, the newer fan may not have seen other material on them.

I enjoyed the book and look forward to more from Carlos Acevedo.
